A traditional gaming PC suits a desk or living-room setup; a SteamOS handheld such as the Steam Deck OLED combines a screen and controls for portable, controller-first play. Before choosing a handheld, check compatibility for your must-play games individually: Proton runs many Windows games on SteamOS, but not every title works equally well.
Start with your Steam library
Write down the games you play most, including multiplayer titles and games that depend on a launcher or anti-cheat system. Then check each title’s current Steam Deck compatibility information. SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve’s Proton compatibility layer allows many Windows games to run on it. Valve’s Verified program flags games that do not run well on SteamOS, but a rating is guidance about the expected experience—not a guarantee that every game in your library will behave the same way.
Valve explains the purpose of the program in its SteamOS documentation: “When a game doesn’t run well on SteamOS, we call it out with our Verified program so customers know what will and won’t work well.” Check the status of the games that matter to you rather than assuming compatibility from the size of the Steam library.
Choose by where and how you play
| Consideration | Traditional gaming PC | SteamOS handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A fixed desk or living-room setup, depending on the PC you choose. | Travel, couch play, and gaming with an integrated screen and controls. |
| Controls and interface | A conventional computer setup; peripherals and display depend on the system you select. | Steam Deck is designed as a portable PC gaming device with a controller-oriented interface. |
| Power away from an outlet | A desktop requires mains power. Laptop runtime depends on its model and workload. | Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay on Steam Deck OLED, depending on content and settings. |
| SteamOS features | Depends on the chosen PC and operating system. | SteamOS starts in Steam’s gaming interface and also has a desktop mode, as well as quick suspend and resume. |
Pick a PC for a fixed setup
A traditional gaming PC is the straightforward choice if you expect to play mainly at a desk or on a living-room display and prefer a conventional computer arrangement. The right comparison depends on the specific PC: its operating system, hardware, game requirements, display, and included storage all matter. There is no performance winner established by the specifications here, so do not treat the form factor alone as a guarantee of higher frame rates or broader compatibility.

Pick a handheld for integrated, portable play
A Steam Deck puts the controls and display in one portable device. Valve describes it as controller-first and console-like. SteamOS also provides quick suspend and resume for pausing and picking up play, while desktop mode gives access to a desktop environment. This makes a handheld a natural fit when you expect to move between rooms or play away from a fixed setup.
Understand Steam Deck OLED battery life
Valve lists a 50 Wh battery and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay for Steam Deck OLED. That is a range, not a guaranteed session length: Valve says its estimate assumes 30 FPS, 50% brightness, and 50% volume, and that higher settings can drain the battery faster. Runtime varies with the game and settings, so plan for shorter sessions if you rely on demanding games, higher brightness, louder audio, or higher frame rates. The estimate is for the OLED Deck; it should not be applied to every handheld or PC.

Match storage to the games you install
Steam Deck OLED is available in 512 GB and 1 TB configurations, and both include a high-speed microSD slot supporting UHS-I, according to Valve’s Steam Deck product page. The slot allows storage expansion, but the right amount depends on how many games you intend to keep installed. For a traditional gaming PC, compare the selected system’s included storage and upgrade options; capacity varies by model.
Check the screen and connections you need
Valve lists Steam Deck OLED with a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display and a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. It also lists Wi-Fi 6E and USB-C display output. These are product specifications, not a measure of how a particular game will perform. If you want a larger display or a different setup, weigh that against the handheld’s integrated screen and controls; for a PC, check the actual display and connections on the system you plan to buy.

Make the decision
- List your essential games. Include multiplayer games and any title that uses a separate launcher or anti-cheat, then check each one’s current Steam Deck compatibility status.
- Choose your usual play location. Frequent travel or couch play favors an integrated handheld; a desk or living-room station favors a traditional PC.
- Decide how much unplugged time you need. Compare your expectations with Valve’s qualified OLED battery estimate, allowing for shorter runtime at more demanding settings.
- Estimate how much storage you need at once. Compare your installed-game habits with the OLED’s 512 GB and 1 TB options and microSD expansion, or review the selected PC’s storage and upgrade options.
- Confirm the display and connections fit. Consider whether the Deck’s integrated screen and USB-C display output suit your setup, or whether you would rather choose a PC and display separately.
SteamOS compatibility and supported devices can change. Valve notes that compatibility with other AMD-powered PCs has improved with Steam and SteamOS 3.8 updates, and expects most users to get SteamOS preinstalled on a Steam Deck or a device incorporating SteamOS. Check Valve’s current SteamOS information for device support, and confirm regional configurations and availability on the Steam Deck page before buying.
