Then weigh performance, battery life for those games, setup demands, screen and controls, storage, price, and portability.
Start with your games and where you play them
Make a short list of the games you actually intend to play. For each, record its storefront or ecosystem—Steam, Xbox/Game Pass, Epic, GOG, Battle.net, or another launcher—and whether it requires a particular account, persistent internet access, or an anti-cheat system. Compatibility can differ by title, launcher, operating system, and software version.
On Steam Deck, SteamOS and its compatibility layer support many PC games, but that does not mean every Steam title works. Check the current compatibility information for every must-play game rather than inferring support from the storefront. Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications describe the hardware; they do not certify individual games.
A Windows handheld can make access to multiple PC storefronts more direct. ASUS describes the 2024 ROG Ally X as a Windows 11 device with access to Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG. Storefront access is not a guarantee that every game, launcher, account flow or anti-cheat system will work identically. Check the specific title on the device and OS version you plan to use.

Match the handheld to the library that matters
Steam library and a SteamOS workflow
The Steam Deck OLED is worth considering when your games are compatible with SteamOS and you want a handheld centered on Steam. Verify individual titles, especially multiplayer games with anti-cheat, and consider whether you are comfortable with any setup required for games outside the standard Steam workflow.
Several PC storefronts or Windows-dependent games
Windows models such as the 2024 ROG Ally X and the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models are options when your library spans PC storefronts or depends on Windows. Windows does not remove game-specific requirements: launchers, sign-ins, anti-cheat, updates, and network access can still affect whether a title is playable in the way you expect.

Nintendo, PlayStation, or retro libraries
If the games you want are Nintendo exclusives, a Nintendo Switch 2 may be a better fit than a PC handheld. For PS5 remote play, PlayStation Portal serves a different purpose: TechRadar’s 2026 buying guide describes it as streaming-only and requiring a constant internet connection. If your priority is retro gaming, a dedicated retro handheld may suit your library better than a Windows PC handheld. These options are not interchangeable with a device that runs PC games locally.
Compare options only after checking compatibility
These models represent different platform choices, not a promise that one will run every PC game equally well. Confirm the exact configuration and current regional price before buying; prices and availability are not established here.

Check performance for the titles you will play
A demanding new release and a lightweight indie game can make the same handheld feel like a different purchase. Look for comparisons that identify the exact device configuration, game, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate cap and power mode. A result measured at low resolution or while plugged in cannot establish how that device will perform at a higher resolution on battery.
Tom’s Guide compared the 2024 ROG Ally X and Steam Deck OLED, including benchmark and battery observations from its tested setup. Treat those observations as results for that setup, not guarantees for every owner or later software version. ASUS’s performance examples for the 2024 Ally X also name test titles and conditions; ASUS notes that performance may change as the platform matures and drivers are released. Estimate battery life from your own workload
Battery capacity is not a runtime estimate. A demanding game, high resolution, high frame rate and performance-focused power mode can draw more power than a light game at reduced settings. If playing unplugged matters, look for battery tests of the games you play and compare equivalent settings and modes.
ASUS’s “up to 2X battery life” comparison for the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X is a manufacturer claim tied to a specific test: Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics and Silent mode, compared with the 2024 ROG Ally X. It is not a universal hours-per-charge result. ASUS’s battery comparisons for the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally likewise use named games and specified settings and operating modes. Read the conditions on the ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally pages before treating a manufacturer comparison as relevant to your games.

Consider setup, controls, screen and portability
Think about how often you want to navigate a desktop-style operating system, manage launchers, sign in, update games and troubleshoot compatibility. A broader storefront choice may suit your library, but it can also mean more account and launcher management. Choose the trade-off you are willing to live with, not just the storefront count.
Screen size, resolution, refresh rate, weight, grip and control layout influence long sessions and the kinds of games that feel comfortable. ASUS lists 7-inch 1080p/120Hz displays for both 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models. That specification alone does not establish which device is more comfortable to hold or better for your particular games. If possible, try the device in hand and test the controls you use most—such as sticks, triggers, trackpads or detachable controls—before deciding.
Check storage, price and warranty for your region
Compare the precise model and storage capacity, then consider how much space your installed games need and whether you are willing to manage a microSD card or internal-drive upgrade. ASUS says the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X can accept an off-the-shelf drive, but confirm the drive form factor and compatibility for the exact handheld before purchasing parts.
Prices, configurations, warranty terms and availability depend on the region and can change. Check the local listing for the exact model, included storage and warranty, and account for any expansion you expect to buy. Do not compare a base configuration with a more expensive model as though the prices covered equivalent storage or features.
A quick decision process
- Write down three to five must-play games. Include multiplayer titles and games you expect to play away from Wi-Fi.
- Record each game’s storefront and requirements. Note launcher, account, anti-cheat and persistent-network dependencies.
- Check each title on the exact device and current OS. Do not treat storefront availability or a general platform label as proof of compatibility.
- Compare performance and battery evidence under relevant conditions. Match the game, resolution, settings, frame limit and power mode as closely as possible to your intended use.
- Evaluate the daily experience. Compare setup demands, controls, screen, grip, weight, storage and local pricing and warranty.
- Buy for your actual library and habits. Choose a console-focused or streaming device instead if its exclusive ecosystem or remote-play function is the reason you want a handheld.
