Shotcut, OpenShot, and DaVinci Resolve are worth comparing, but the available official information does not establish one as the best choice for everyone.
Start with your computer and project requirements
Before downloading anything, note your operating system, the video files you plan to edit, and the format and resolution you need to export. These details narrow the choices more reliably than a general claim that an editor is “easy” or “powerful.”
- Operating system: Confirm current support for your Windows, macOS, or Linux setup. Compatibility with an operating system family does not guarantee compatibility with every release.
- Footage and export: Check whether the editor’s supported formats and export options cover the files and delivery settings you need.
- Computer capability: Compare the editor’s current requirements and guidance with your machine, especially if you expect to edit high-resolution footage.
- Workflow: Decide whether you need a focused timeline editor or a broader suite with color, effects, audio, and other post-production tools.
Compare the three editors on their documented fit
| Editor | What its official information establishes | What to check for your project |
|---|---|---|
| Shotcut | Shotcut describes itself as free and open-source, with Windows, Mac, and Linux support, broad format support, native timeline editing, and resolution support up to 4K. Shotcut | Confirm that your operating system and media formats are supported, then assess whether its timeline and proxy workflow suit your project and computer. |
| OpenShot | OpenShot’s version 4.0.1 user guide describes the software as free under the GNU GPL and includes separate sections for system requirements and exporting. OpenShot user guide | Consult the requirements and export guidance for the version you plan to use; test your required export settings on your own files. |
| DaVinci Resolve | Blackmagic Design describes a free DaVinci Resolve version and a paid Studio edition with additional features. Its product information covers editing, color, effects, audio, and export workflows. DaVinci Resolve | Check whether the free edition includes the particular features you need, and compare the current requirements with your computer. |
These descriptions do not provide a standardized ease-of-use study or a controlled performance comparison. Treat each as a candidate to evaluate against your requirements, not as an interchangeable option or a universal winner.
Check hardware guidance without treating it as a guarantee
Shotcut’s FAQ gives processor guidance by editing resolution and points to preview scaling and proxies as ways to reduce preview lag on lower-end systems. That is practical guidance, not a promise that a particular computer will perform well: footage, settings, and project complexity can all affect the experience. See the Shotcut FAQ for its current guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Dell Services: 1 Year Onsite Service provides support when and where you need it. Dell will come to your home, office, or location of choice, if an issue covered by Limited Hardware Warranty cannot be resolved remotely.
For OpenShot and DaVinci Resolve, use each publisher’s current requirements rather than inferring capability from another editor’s guidance. The cited OpenShot guide includes a requirements section; Blackmagic Design’s product page is the place to check Resolve’s current product and edition details.
Use a short test project to make the decision
- Write down your setup and delivery target. Record your operating system, a representative footage file, and the export format and resolution you need.
- Check the candidates’ current official information. Review supported platforms and requirements, including the Shotcut FAQ and the OpenShot guide’s requirements and export sections.
- Match the workflow to the job. Choose whether you want a focused timeline workflow or the broader set of post-production functions documented for Resolve; do not assume that more features automatically make an editor a better fit.
- Verify Resolve’s free-edition boundary if it is a candidate. Check the current feature distinction between free Resolve and paid Studio on Blackmagic Design’s product page.
- Try a representative edit on your actual computer. Import a typical clip, make a short edit, and export using the exact format and resolution you need. This reveals workflow and compatibility issues that a feature list cannot settle.
Choose based on fit, not the word “free”
“Free” does not describe the same workflow, hardware demands, or edition boundaries across these editors. The most useful choice is the one that supports your computer and files, handles the project’s complexity, and produces the export you need without requiring features outside its free edition.
