The reliable way to choose foundation for South Asian skin is to match complexion depth and undertone separately. Start with three neighboring shades on your jawline, blend them toward the neck, let the formula settle, and judge the result in natural daylight. The winner should visually disappear across your face and neck; ethnicity alone cannot identify a shade.
South Asian complexions range from very fair to deep and may be warm-golden, neutral, cool, olive or a combination. Once color is right, choose a formula and finish for your skin type and the coverage you actually need.
Depth and undertone are two different decisions
Depth describes how light or deep your complexion appears. A practical starting vocabulary is fair, light, medium, dusky and deep, but these labels are not standardized between brands. One brand’s medium may sit beside another brand’s light-medium or tan.

Undertone is the subtle color beneath the surface: warm (yellow, golden or peach), cool (pink, red or rosy), neutral (a balance of warm and cool) or olive (a muted green-gray cast that can lean yellow). Two people with the same depth can need completely different foundations because their undertones differ.

Use depth as a range, not a verdict
Look at your face, jaw and upper chest in daylight without makeup. Decide which two depth descriptions are closest, such as light-to-medium or medium-to-dusky. This keeps you from overcommitting to a label before you test actual pigment.
Treat undertone clues as a hypothesis
| Working undertone | Clues that may support it | What a mismatch can look like |
|---|---|---|
| Warm | Veins appear green or greenish-blue; skin has a yellow or golden cast; gold jewelry is especially harmonious. | Cool or pink bases can look gray, chalky or unnaturally pink. |
| Cool | Veins look blue or purple; skin has a pink or rosy cast; silver jewelry is especially harmonious. | Very yellow or orange bases can look sallow or overly warm. |
| Neutral | Vein color and jewelry tests give mixed signals, with neither yellow nor pink clearly dominant. | A strongly yellow or strongly pink base can pull visibly off-color. |
| Olive | A green-gray cast combined with yellow; many standard warm shades look too orange while neutral shades may look too pink. | Orange, peach or rosy foundations can sit on top of the skin instead of merging with it. |
These tests are directional, not scientific. Indoor lighting, tanning, surface redness and surrounding colors can change what you see. Use them to choose swatches, then let the jawline test decide.
Why South Asian foundation matching can be deceptively difficult
There is no single “South Asian” shade. South Asian populations include a wide range of depths and undertones, including warm-golden, neutral-warm, olive, cool and deep neutral-warm appearances. SUGAR’s guide describes Indian complexions as commonly falling within Fitzpatrick types III, IV and V, but that is a brand-published characterization rather than an independently verified prevalence estimate. It should not be used to assign a shade to every Indian or South Asian customer.

Many ranges were historically built around pink-beige pigment systems. On yellow, golden or olive skin, the depth may look close while the base turns ashy, pink or muddy. A Concordia University thesis records a consumer describing this exact problem: darker shades were too pink-peachy, while neutral shades were unavailable at the depth needed. The problem is an undertone and range-design mismatch, not proof that your skin is unusually difficult to match.
The repeatable jawline method
Follow the same process whether you are testing a luxury counter, a pharmacy range or samples ordered online.
- Begin with clean skin. Remove foundation and tinted sunscreen, then allow skincare to absorb. Test in good natural light, ideally near a window or outdoors in open shade.
- Estimate your depth. Compare your bare complexion with the fair, light, medium, dusky and deep descriptions. If you are between categories, keep both possibilities in your test group.
- Choose an undertone hypothesis. Check vein color, the yellow/pink balance of your skin and which jewelry looks harmonious. Include an olive or neutral-warm option when your skin reads green-gray or when warm shades become orange.
- Select three adjacent shades. Pick one shade you suspect is close, one slightly lighter and one slightly deeper, keeping undertone families as comparable as the range allows. Three neighboring swatches reveal whether the issue is depth or undertone.
- Place the swatches on your jawline. Draw vertical stripes from the lower cheek over the jaw toward the neck. Maybelline recommends the neck or jawline and notes that the jawline is less redness-prone than the center of the face. If dark spots distort your jawline, use a representative area of skin nearby. Do not use the back of your hand; SUGAR warns that it may be darker from sun exposure.
- Blend each stripe. Feather the edges so you can see whether the pigment merges with both face and neck. A stripe that disappears at the face but leaves a visible band at the neck is not a complete match.
- Wait for the formula to settle. Give the swatches several minutes before deciding. Recheck after the product has dried down, because some formulas change slightly as water or volatile ingredients evaporate.
- Inspect in the light where you will wear it. Compare natural daylight with your usual indoor lighting. L’Oréal recommends checking both indoors and in daylight. Take a phone photo without a beauty filter if you need to compare subtle differences.
- Choose the shade that disappears. The correct stripe should not create a pale, orange, pink or gray line. Maybelline’s October 28, 2024 guide describes the goal as a shade that “doesn’t let you differentiate between your skin and the colour of the product.”
How to read a bad result
| What you see after blending | Likely cause | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Gray, chalky or ashy | The shade may be too light, too cool or based on a pigment system that does not suit your undertone. | Try a slightly deeper shade and compare a warm, neutral-warm or olive option rather than simply adding more product. |
| Orange or strongly yellow | The base is too warm, the depth is too deep, or the formula is oxidizing as it settles. | Test the neighboring neutral or olive shade and judge it after the full settling time. |
| Muddy or brown | The depth may be too deep, or the undertone may be mismatched. | Test one step lighter while keeping the undertone family constant, then compare with a different undertone at the same depth. |
| Pink or peach on the skin | The pigment base is too cool or pink-beige for your yellow, golden or olive undertone. | Move toward warm, neutral-warm or olive options at the same depth. |
| Face matches but neck looks obvious | The face and neck have different levels of tanning, redness or pigmentation. | Use the upper chest as a second reference and select the shade that creates the most natural transition across face, jaw and neck. |
Do not correct an undertone mismatch by applying a much darker or lighter shade. That changes depth while leaving the underlying color problem in place.

Match the face, jaw, neck or chest?
The jawline is the best first testing site because it bridges the face and neck and usually has less redness than the cheeks. The goal is not to make the face match a single isolated patch; it is to create a seamless transition. When your neck is substantially lighter or darker than your face, check the upper chest as an additional reference. This is particularly useful when the face is tanned, treated for pigmentation or exposed to more sunlight than the torso.
For photography or events, test under the actual venue lighting as well as daylight. A shade that disappears in a window can read warmer under indoor bulbs, so confirm before applying it for a long occasion.
Account for seasonal changes
Your undertone usually remains fairly stable while your depth can change with sun exposure. L’Oréal recommends keeping a cooler-month match and a shade one or two steps deeper for summer when tanning changes your depth. Test the seasonal shade on the jaw rather than assuming the same numerical jump works across brands. If only the face tans, blend toward the neck and chest so the result does not create a mask.

Choose formula and finish after color
Color accuracy comes first. Once the shade disappears, select the texture that suits your skin and the way you want coverage to look.
| Skin type or need | Useful starting formula | Why it can work |
|---|---|---|
| Oily skin | Matte or oil-free foundation | These formulas are designed to reduce a visibly shiny finish and can feel more stable through the day. |
| Dry skin | Hydrating liquid or serum foundation | More emollient, fluid textures are less likely to emphasize flaky patches. |
| Combination skin | Lightweight liquid or cream foundation | You can use a flexible layer across the face and add targeted setting products only where needed. |
| Uneven pigmentation | Buildable coverage | Apply a thin layer everywhere and concentrate additional coverage only over discoloration instead of wearing a heavy layer on clear skin. |
Finish and coverage do not change the correct color. A matte formula can look lighter when it dries down, and a luminous formula can appear deeper because it reflects more light. Always judge the swatch after the product has settled in its final finish.

| Range | Guidance supplied by the brand | How to use it responsibly |
|---|---|---|
| Maybelline Fit Me foundation | Maybelline’s India guide recommends testing on the neck or jawline and choosing the shade that blends into the complexion. | Use the range to locate three neighboring depth and undertone candidates; do not select from an Indian or South Asian label alone. |
| SUGAR Ace Of Face Foundation Stick | SUGAR identifies Caramel and Honey around medium or wheatish warm-golden complexions, and Cappuccino and Espresso for dusky or deep complexions. The guide describes Caramel as a warm, buildable option. | These are starting points for warm-golden or deeper skin, not universal matches. Swatch adjacent shades and confirm after blending. |
| L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Foundation | L’Oréal organizes the range into warm, cool and neutral families and recommends jawline testing in multiple lighting conditions. | Choose the undertone family only after comparing your skin in daylight and indoor light, then verify depth on the jaw. |
Finding a shade when shopping online
Online matching is less certain because screen color, photography and lighting vary. Make the process as evidence-based as possible:
- Record the exact foundation, shade name and undertone that already matches you in daylight. A match in one brand is a starting reference, not a universal conversion.
- Read the brand’s undertone descriptions and look for warm, cool, neutral and olive families. If olive is absent, compare neutral-warm and warm shades rather than assuming a standard yellow base will work.
- Order or request three adjacent shades when samples are available. Test all three on the jaw under the same conditions instead of judging a bottle or website swatch in isolation.
- Check whether the retailer offers samples, virtual try-on or a shade-exchange policy before opening the product. Terms and availability vary by retailer and region, so confirm them at checkout.
- Keep the packaging and receipt until you have tested the shade after settling. Do not rely on a hand swatch or an online color chip as final proof.
Common mistakes that create a “wrong” shade
- Matching the hand: Hands are often more sun-exposed and can be darker than the face and neck.
- Testing over makeup: Existing foundation, bronzer or tinted sunscreen changes the apparent undertone.
- Choosing by ethnicity: South Asian identity does not determine depth or undertone.
- Testing only one shade: A single stripe cannot show whether the problem is one step of depth or a different pigment family.
- Judging immediately: Wet product can look different from the settled finish.
- Using only bathroom lighting: Artificial light can hide grayness or exaggerate orange tones.
- Ignoring the neck: A face-only match can leave a visible line at the jaw.
- Changing depth to fix undertone: Going darker will not remove a pink or orange cast.
- Applying full coverage everywhere: Heavy product can make a close shade look more obvious; build coverage only where pigmentation requires it.
A quick decision checklist
- Have you tested on clean skin?
- Did you estimate both depth and undertone instead of using one label?
- Did you include three adjacent jawline shades?
- Did you blend toward the neck and check the upper chest when face and neck differ?
- Did you inspect the result in natural daylight and your normal indoor lighting?
- Did you wait for the formula to settle before deciding?
- Does the shade disappear without gray, pink, orange or muddy edges?
- Does the formula suit your skin type and provide the coverage you need?
- Will you need a second, deeper shade for a tanned season?
What the official guides emphasize
Maybelline New York’s official guide, dated October 28, 2024, calls swatching an easy way to find a perfect shade and says the match is found when skin and product cannot be visually differentiated. L’Oréal Paris’s guide, dated October 31, 2025, summarizes its method as: “Find your undertone, test in the right light, and pick a formula that wears like skin.” It specifically advises swiping three adjacent shades on the jawline to assess both face and neck. SUGAR Cosmetics’ guide, dated April 24, 2026, gives the same practical instruction: “Always swatch on the jawline in natural light.”
Together, those recommendations point to a simple rule: use brand shade names and undertone labels to build a shortlist, but let a blended, settled jawline test in realistic light make the final decision.
