Choose based on your phone, activities, and how much you want to do from your wrist. A fitness tracker is usually enough for steps, heart rate, sleep trends, and workout summaries. Choose a smartwatch if you also want a larger display, apps, calls, message responses, navigation, or payments. The labels overlap, so compare the features of the exact models you are considering.
Decide which category fits your routine
Fitness trackers tend to prioritize activity and health monitoring in a lighter, simpler form. Smartwatches add more phone-like interaction. Neither label guarantees a particular feature: check the model specifications and phone requirements before choosing.
A fitness tracker is a good fit if
- You mainly want step counts, heart-rate readings, sleep trends, and exercise summaries.
- You prefer a smaller or less obtrusive device and fewer charging interruptions.
- You do not expect to make calls, use many wrist apps, or respond to messages from the device.
A smartwatch is a good fit if
- You want notifications, message responses, calls, apps, contactless payments, music controls, or a more readable screen.
- You want specialist sports functions such as richer running metrics, navigation, maps, or multisport support.
- You are willing to charge more often and have confirmed that the phone and regional features you need are supported.
Check phone compatibility before comparing features
Start with the exact phone you own, not just its brand. Confirm the watch’s supported phone operating systems and versions, required companion app, and whether important functions need a particular manufacturer’s phone. For example, Which? says Apple Watch requires an iPhone. Samsung says some Samsung health features require Android 11 or later and Google Mobile Services, while certain features require a Galaxy phone. See Which?’s tracker-versus-smartwatch guide and Samsung’s feature compatibility information.
Then verify that the features you care about are available in your country and work with your account setup. Compatibility can differ by model, phone, software version, and region; a general claim that a device works with Android or iPhone does not establish that every function will work.

Match GPS and sport features to what you do
For gym sessions or everyday activity, basic workout recording may be all you need. For outdoor activities, distinguish between a device that records a route and one that helps you follow a route: built-in GPS can track an outdoor route without carrying your phone, while navigation and maps are additional features that vary by model.
- Walking or casual running: Decide whether you need phone-free GPS tracking or are content to bring your phone.
- Running or cycling training: Compare training metrics, GPS capabilities, and whether the device works with a chest heart-rate monitor if you use one.
- Hiking or unfamiliar routes: Check specifically for route guidance or maps; GPS route recording alone does not mean the watch can navigate.
- Swimming or multisport: Confirm that the device supports the activity modes you need and that its water rating is appropriate for your intended exposure.

Compare battery life under realistic conditions
Battery life depends on settings and activities, especially GPS use and display behavior. Consumer NZ reports GPS use can halve battery life in some cases, so compare the mode closest to how you will actually wear and use the device rather than relying on a headline maximum. Also check how often you are willing to charge it and whether its charger is proprietary.
As examples of manufacturer-stated maximums, Garmin lists the vívoactive 6 at up to 11 days in smartwatch mode and the Venu 4 at up to 12 days for the 45 mm size in smartwatch mode. These are Garmin specifications for the named models and mode, not independent everyday-use averages. Settings and activity use can change actual runtime.

Check comfort, durability, and water suitability
If you plan to wear a device through the day and overnight, fit matters as much as its feature list. Compare case size and weight, strap options, and screen durability; if possible, try the size on before buying. A replacement strap must be compatible with the specific model rather than assumed to fit every tracker or watch.
For water exposure, check the exact model’s stated rating and what it permits. Do not infer swimming suitability from a generic “water resistant” label. Choose according to the activity you intend to do, and consult the manufacturer’s guidance for the device.

Weigh smart features against charging and cost
List the wrist functions you will use regularly: notifications, calls, replies, payments, voice features, music, phone-free connectivity, or third-party apps. If you only want occasional activity summaries, paying for a broad app ecosystem or connectivity may add complexity without improving your routine. Check the current listing for the exact model’s price and any subscription-dependent functions; these vary and cannot be assumed from the product category.
Understand what health and sleep readings can tell you
Consumer wearable readings are useful as personal estimates and trends, not as a diagnosis or clinical measurement. Consumer NZ describes sleep tracking as developing technology and cautions that it should not be expected to provide medical-grade accuracy. If a health concern needs assessment, a tracker reading is not a substitute for advice from a qualified health professional.

Review data practices before enabling health features
Check the companion app’s privacy terms and settings to understand what information the service collects, stores, or shares. Consider whether you are comfortable with the account and cloud features required for the functions you want, and review sharing controls before connecting health data to other apps or services.
Use this shortlist checklist
- Write down your main activities and the data or wrist functions you genuinely need.
- Confirm the exact model supports your phone, operating-system version, app, country, and account setup.
- For outdoor sports, distinguish built-in GPS route recording from maps, navigation, and advanced training functions.
- Compare battery expectations in the modes you will use, including GPS and display settings.
- Check fit, weight, strap compatibility, screen durability, and water suitability for your activities.
- Review privacy terms, subscriptions, and the total current cost of the model and its required services.
For another independent comparison perspective, Consumer NZ’s fitness tracker guide says it has tested 87 current and 94 discontinued models; those are the guide’s testing counts, not a statistic about the overall market.
