Choose a first issue by fit, clarity, scope, project activity, and a way to verify the result—not by the good first issue label alone. A label helps you find candidates; it does not guarantee an issue is current, easy, or likely to be accepted. Start with a project you use or want to learn, inspect its contribution process, and confirm the task is still wanted before you invest time.

Start with a project that fits your interests and tools

Pick an AI-related project whose software you use, care about, or genuinely want to understand. Familiarity with its language, package manager, and development environment helps you judge the issue and check your change. An adjacent task you can complete and verify is usually a better first contribution than a complex model-architecture change.

The Open Source Guides recommends looking first at projects you already use or want to use. Before choosing an issue, check the repository’s README and contribution guide, often named CONTRIBUTING.md, for setup steps, supported versions, coding conventions, tests, and contribution policies. Follow the repository’s own instructions where they differ from general advice.

Check that the project has a working contribution loop

A promising first task needs a reasonable path to review, not just code to change. Look at several signals together; none guarantees that a maintainer will respond or merge your work.

Allplay Alibis Board Game, Whodunnit Word Association Party, 2-6 Players
  • WHODUNIT WORD DEDUCTION: Solve the crime by connecting clever word clues to uncover who’s lying and who’s telling the truth. Every round challenges players to think fast, read the room, and catch the culprit.
  • SOCIAL BLUFFING & ASSOCIATION: Players create convincing alibis using word associations while one secret criminal tries to blend in. The mix of bluffing and logic creates big laughs and memorable “aha!” moments.
  • PERFECT PARTY GAME ENERGY: Designed for 4-8 players, Alibis shines at parties, game nights, and group gatherings. Everyone stays involved through discussion, debate, and accusation from start to finish.
  • EASY TO LEARN, FAST TO PLAY: Simple rules get the game started in minutes while still delivering meaningful deduction. With a 20-30 minute playtime, it’s ideal for repeat plays and late-night rounds.
  • HIGH REPLAY VALUE & VARIETY: A wide range of scenarios, clues, and word combinations ensure no two games feel the same. Endless variability keeps the mystery fresh and the accusations flying every time.
  • License: Is an explicit license present?
  • Recent activity: Are there recent commits, issues, and pull requests?
  • Review: Do maintainers reply constructively, review contributions, and merge suitable work?
  • Project guidance: Are contribution, code-of-conduct, and security policies available where relevant?

The Open Source Guides’ project-selection advice suggests checking the latest commit, issue age and closure, and recent pull-request review and merge activity. Treat these as evidence about the project’s contribution loop, not as a promise of acceptance.

Use issue labels to discover candidates, not to judge them

On GitHub, search a repository’s issues for good first issue or help wanted. The repository’s /contribute page may also surface opportunities. GitHub describes good first issue as a discoverability label for beginner-friendly work; the label itself does not establish that a task is small, current, or self-explanatory.

Training involves Back-propagation which is Retraining or Fine Tuning. Using bots and code card this game sneakily introduces all those concepts which form foundation of today’s AI world. Learning Coding and AI concept helps you connect with real coding and AI.
  1. Skill and toolchain fit: Can you use the language, package manager, and environment involved, or learn the missing piece within a small task?
  2. Clear outcome: Does the issue say what should change, rather than only naming a broad problem?
  3. Bounded scope: Can the change be understood and reviewed as one focused contribution, without unresolved design decisions?
  4. Verifiability: Can you reproduce the bug, run a relevant test, or otherwise demonstrate the expected result?
  5. Useful context: Does the issue identify relevant files, packages, examples, or a sensible next investigation step?
  6. Current status: Are the comments recent enough to establish that the task remains open, and is someone already working on it?

When choosing between two otherwise plausible issues, prefer the one with the clearer result and verification path, better fit, smaller scope, and more evidence of active review. Maintainer confirmation that the task is still wanted is especially useful when other signals are uncertain.

Ask before coding when the issue is unclear or stale

If an issue is old, vague, substantial, potentially duplicated, or already assigned or discussed, check its status before starting. Leave a concise public comment describing the small scope you propose and ask whether it still matches maintainer priorities. For a feature or other large change, discuss the approach first. Public issue or discussion channels also let others benefit from the answer.

This is particularly important when the issue leaves key decisions open: a maintainer’s confirmation can turn an ambiguous request into a reviewable task—or save you from doing work the project no longer wants. GitHub’s contribution guidance likewise recommends asking about an unlabelled issue before submitting a pull request.

Choose meaningful work beyond AI model code

Your first contribution does not need to change a model or training algorithm. Depending on what the repository accepts, useful work can include improving documentation or setup instructions, adding or clarifying tests, reproducing a reported bug, or testing a pull request. Choose the task that has a clear outcome and fits the project’s rules, not the one that sounds most impressive.

Make a focused contribution reviewers can check

  1. Follow the project’s workflow: Use its instructions for forking or branching, setting up the environment, formatting, tests, and pull requests.
  2. Keep the change tied to the issue: Avoid bundling unrelated cleanup or extra features into a first contribution.
  3. Explain verification: In the pull request, say what you changed and which relevant checks you ran, or what prevented you from running them.
  4. Respond to review: Address feedback within the project’s process and clarify anything you do not understand.

A focused change with an explicit verification path is easier for maintainers to assess. Acceptance is still the maintainers’ decision and depends on the project’s goals.

Use AI assistance without handing off responsibility

AI tools can help explain unfamiliar issue context or code, but their suggestions need independent checking. The Open Source Guides advises contributors to verify that AI output is accurate, follows project conventions, and addresses the intended issue; contributors remain responsible for what they submit. Understand every part of your diff, run the relevant checks, and follow any project-specific policy on AI-assisted contributions.
