Start with how your family will play. For several people sharing one Switch, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is the clearest fit: its main game supports one to four players on one system, while its companion adventure offers a different, free-roaming style. For an exploration-focused game with a limited second-player role, consider Super Mario Odyssey. For adjustable challenge and a chance to sample the game first, consider Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

“Family-friendly” is a household judgment, not a guarantee based on colorful graphics or an age-rating label. Check your region’s rating and content descriptors, then weigh who will play, how much challenge suits the child, and whether they prefer courses or open exploration.

Compare the three games by the way your family plays

Game One-system play and style Useful family fit US ESRB descriptors on Nintendo’s listing
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury 1–4 players on one system. The main game is course-based and supports local teaming or competition; Bowser’s Fury is a separate free-roaming adventure with an optional second player helping as Bowser Jr. [Nintendo listing] Several siblings, or a parent and children, who want to play together; also offers two distinct styles in one package. Mild Cartoon Violence; Users Interact
Super Mario Odyssey 1–2 players on one system. Player one controls Mario; player two controls Cappy, Mario’s companion. The game is presented as a sandbox-style adventure built around exploration, moves and collectibles. [Nintendo listing] A child who wants to explore and collect, with a second player available in a supporting role. Comic Mischief; Cartoon Violence
Kirby and the Forgotten Land 1–2 players on one system. It has two named difficulty modes and Nintendo describes a free demo with three stages. [Nintendo listing] Families who want a choice of challenge level or to try a few stages before deciding. Cartoon Violence

The player counts, mechanics and ESRB descriptors above come from Nintendo’s US product pages; they are published specifications, not independent play tests. Rating names and storefront availability can differ by country, so check the listing and rating for your region. The ESRB descriptors are screening cues, not a definitive ranking of what every child will enjoy or what every household will consider comfortable.

Choose based on who will play together

For a group sharing one console

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is the only one of these listings that specifies up to four players on one system. Nintendo describes its course-based game as a chance to team up with or compete against friends locally, and the package also includes the separate Bowser’s Fury adventure. Nintendo’s product description says: “Pounce and climb through dozens of colorful courses! Multiply the fun by teaming up with or competing against friends locally* or online** to reach each stage’s goal.” This is Nintendo’s publisher copy, not a quotation from a named individual.

For a parent or sibling to help from the side

In Super Mario Odyssey, the second player controls Cappy while the first controls Mario. That is a support role rather than two players each controlling a full character. In Bowser’s Fury, a second player can help as Bowser Jr. These role differences matter if children want equal control or would rather have an older player assist.

For two-player local co-op

Kirby and the Forgotten Land supports local two-player play according to Nintendo’s listing. If more than two people want to take part at once on a single system, the listed player counts make Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury the better match among these three.

Match the challenge and play style to the child

Adjustable challenge and a sample

Kirby and the Forgotten Land offers Spring-Breeze mode, with more health and easier enemies, and Wild mode, with tougher enemies and more rewards. Nintendo also describes a free demo containing three stages. These are concrete ways to consider challenge and try a portion of the game; they do not establish how easy the controls will feel to a particular child.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - US Version
  • A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
  • Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
  • Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
  • Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
  • Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.

Shorter courses or free-roaming exploration

The main game in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is organized around courses and stage goals. The included Bowser’s Fury is the more free-roaming adventure. Super Mario Odyssey is also exploration-led, with capture-based moves and collectibles. A child who likes clear, bounded stages may prefer the course structure; one who enjoys wandering and finding things may gravitate toward the exploration-focused options.

Check content ratings and set household limits

Before buying, look up the full age rating and descriptors in your own region rather than relying on the US ESRB labels in the table. Consider what the descriptors mean for your household and child; a rating does not predict an individual child’s reaction or enjoyment.

Nintendo Switch parental controls offer system-level options. Nintendo says caregivers can restrict software by age rating and adjust communication and social-media sharing settings on the console or in its smart-device app. The app can also set daily play-time limits and display gameplay history. These controls do not mean a game has no online interaction. For example, Nintendo’s US listing for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury includes “Users Interact” and notes online-feature requirements; choose local play if you do not want online access to be part of the setup. Check your console and play setup before purchase

Nintendo’s product pages note that compatibility and the play experience may vary on Nintendo Switch Lite and that additional accessories may be required, depending on the game and setup. If your family uses a Lite or plans a particular multiplayer configuration, check the relevant game listing and console guidance before buying; do not assume every mode works the same way on every Switch model.

The Nintendo US listings establish physical editions for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and Super Mario Odyssey. Check the relevant regional listing or retailer for current purchase options. No current retailer price or stock level is established here.
