Choose a search engine by checking what its provider says it does with queries and identifiers, reviewing account and optional-feature settings, and trying the results on your own ordinary searches. Then set it as your browser’s address-bar default. That setting changes where your searches go; it does not, by itself, stop tracking on websites you visit afterward.
What a default search engine setting changes
Your default search engine is the service your browser sends a search to when you type a query in the address bar. Changing it reroutes those searches. It does not make the query invisible to the selected provider, and it does not control what an advertiser or destination website collects after you click a result.
Private or incognito windows do not change the basic distinction: they may affect what the browser saves locally, but choosing a search provider and protecting later browsing are separate decisions. Check your browser’s settings if you want a different default for private windows.
Compare the privacy practices that matter
Provider policies describe the provider’s stated practices; they are not independent guarantees. Read them with your intended account use and optional features in mind.

- Queries and identifiers: Does the provider say it retains queries, associates them with an account, browser, device, or IP address, or keeps them in de-identified form?
- Account and personalization controls: Does signing in change how activity may be saved? Can you review or pause history and personalization? A control that limits account history or personalization is not necessarily a promise that no search-related data is processed.
- Suggestions and optional features: Suggestions, feedback, fallback providers, AI answers, or voluntary data-contribution programs can add processing paths. Review the policy and settings for each feature you enable.
- After the click: A search provider cannot determine all tracking by the advertiser or the website you visit. Treat ad clicks and redirects as a separate privacy question.
What Google, DuckDuckGo, and Brave Search disclose
The following is a comparison of the providers’ published statements, not a ranking or independent audit.
| Provider | Published query and identifier practices | Controls or feature caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search | Google says collection and use depend on service use and privacy controls. Its policy says it may store information with unique identifiers tied to a browser, app, or device even when a person is signed out. Depending on settings, Search and other activity may be saved in account history. Google Privacy Policy | Google identifies history and personalization controls, Privacy Checkup, and ad settings. These controls affect saving or use for personalization; they are not a blanket guarantee that no search-related information is processed. The policy was marked effective October 1, 2026 in the search result. |
| DuckDuckGo | DuckDuckGo says it does not save or share search history or save IP addresses alongside searches. It says the device sends information such as IP address, browser type, and language, used temporarily to deliver content and for security; anonymous queries may be retained to improve its indexes. DuckDuckGo Privacy Policy | The company says search ads are based on the results page being viewed rather than an individual profile. Its search engine alone does not protect you when you visit other websites; its browser and extensions provide separate protections. DuckDuckGo privacy help |
| Brave Search | Brave says it collects and stores de-identified query data, including the plain-text query, device platform, operating system, country, language, and date. It says it does not store additional data that could link a query to an individual, device, or IP address, or group queries by originating user, device, or IP. Brave Search privacy notice | Brave Search offers Google Fallback Mixing, which anonymously checks Google and mixes results, if the user enables it. This is an opt-in feature, so consider whether you want that additional provider involved. |
Test whether the results work for you
Privacy disclosures do not establish which engine will give you the most useful results. Quality can vary by query and geography, and there is no comparative benchmark here that supports a universal winner.

Why ad clicks deserve separate attention
A 2023 study by Chouaki, Goga, Haddadi, and Snyder, published in the Proceedings of the ACM Internet Measurement Conference, found redirectors on 100% of the Google, DuckDuckGo, and Startpage ad clicks it tested, separately for each service. The paper also reported unique IDs passed to advertisers in most measured ad clicks across the studied services. These figures describe that study’s tested systems and methodology, not a current rate for every ad, user, search, or browser. The findings are a reason to consider ad-click paths separately, not proof that every provider behaves identically in every circumstance. Read the paper and authors.

Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 24 Inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor
- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
Make the choice fit your privacy needs
- If you use a provider while signed in, review its account history and personalization controls rather than assuming the default setting changes them.
- If you want to limit suggestions or extra features, check those settings individually; changing the default alone does not switch them off.
- If your priority is protection on destination websites, a different search engine alone is not enough. DuckDuckGo explicitly distinguishes its search service from its browser and extensions.
- If you rely on ads or local results, weigh their practical usefulness while remembering that a click introduces data flows beyond the search page.
