Choose a Deadlock hero by matching how you want to fight and help your team with the hero’s weapon, abilities, mobility and survivability. Role and style labels can help you shortlist candidates, but they are descriptive cues—not fixed classes or guarantees of difficulty. Try your finalists in the current game and keep the one whose controls and decisions feel natural.
Start with the job you want to do in a fight
Deadlock heroes have distinct primary weapons and four unique abilities. Some abilities are passive, others are activated, and abilities can be upgraded during a match. That gives you several useful ways to compare heroes beyond a role label.

- Start fights or hold space: Look for descriptions suggesting a brawler, initiator, tank or area-control style.
- Protect or enable teammates: Consider teamplay and support cues, including abilities that help allies or disrupt opponents.
- Harass from range: Precision and hunter descriptions may suit players who prefer careful aim and pressure from a distance.
- Finish vulnerable opponents: Assassin, stealthy or lethal cues suggest a preference for seeking openings and committing to eliminations.
- Disrupt or surprise: Trickster, burst-damage and disruptor descriptions point toward players who enjoy sudden threats, disruption or evasive movement.
These descriptors are useful entry points, not a formal class system, ranking or difficulty scale. Heroes can contribute in more than one way.
Compare the parts of a hero that shape your play
Range and weapon feel
Decide whether you enjoy close combat, mid-range pressure or careful long-range aim. Then look at the weapon: sustained firing, precision shots and weapons that reward timing create different rhythms. A hero’s weapon matters as much as its ability set because you will use it throughout a match.

Movement, access and staying power
Think about whether you want to reposition quickly, chase a target, escape danger or hold a lane or area. Also consider how much direct pressure you are willing to take. A durable approach may suit you better than a high-risk style built around dealing damage before an opponent can respond.
Ability workload
Consider how much attention you want to give cooldowns, combinations and quick reactions. Some players enjoy setting up ability sequences and responding rapidly; others prefer a more straightforward rhythm. The number of abilities alone does not establish how difficult a hero is, so judge the actual controls and decisions in play.

Team contribution
Damage is only one way to help a team. Decide whether you would rather initiate, protect allies, control space, disrupt opponents or secure eliminations. Use hero descriptions to find candidates, then check whether their weapons and abilities support that job.
Shortlist and test heroes in the current game
- Pick your preferred fight contribution. Choose whether you most want to start fights, hold space, protect teammates, harass opponents or finish weakened targets.
- Use style descriptions to make a shortlist. Treat labels such as brawler, precision, support, assassin and disruptor as clues, not promises about a hero’s exact role.
- Compare each candidate’s weapon and abilities. Check whether the range, movement, durability and ability rhythm suit your preferences.
- Try the shortlist in the current game. Keep the hero whose controls and in-match decisions feel natural to you.
- Reassess after substantial balance updates. Valve publishes game updates, so a previous impression or static tier list may not reflect the current balance. Check the live in-game roster rather than relying on an unverified hero count.
Why there is no universal best pick
The available material does not establish a reliable current comparison of hero win rates, pick rates, difficulty or tiers. It therefore cannot support a claim that one hero is objectively strongest or easiest. A practical choice is one whose weapon, mobility, survivability and abilities fit how you want to play—and whose demands you are willing to practice.
