Choose for upgradeability, not for a “quantum-safe” label. The strongest signals are signed firmware updates, open-source or independently reviewable code, a recovery-seed process you can restore and protect for years, support for the exact chains and account models you use, and a vendor that publishes a chain-specific migration plan. An offline wallet still protects an ordinary ECDSA or Schnorr key; it does not turn that key into a post-quantum key.

Post-quantum protection will require changes in wallet software, account or script formats, and the underlying blockchain. No mainstream consumer wallet cited in current documentation is already producing production Bitcoin or Ethereum transactions with finalized NIST post-quantum signatures. Buy a wallet that can be updated and migrated when the networks you use activate those changes.

What post-quantum wallet support actually means

A wallet does not contain “coins”; it protects private keys and helps you create transactions that a blockchain accepts. Today, major networks commonly use elliptic-curve signatures such as ECDSA or Schnorr. A sufficiently capable quantum computer could eventually attack those schemes, particularly after a transaction exposes the corresponding public key. The risk is long term, not an emergency for ordinary users today. The Ethereum Foundation says, “Right now: nothing. Your funds are safe. No quantum computer today can threaten Ethereum’s cryptography.”

Post-quantum support therefore means having a credible route to new cryptographic algorithms and new transaction formats. It can involve a new account type, a new script or descriptor, account-abstraction changes, firmware that implements a new signer, and wallet software that moves funds from an old account to a quantum-resistant one. The wallet must coordinate with the blockchain; a device cannot make an unsupported network accept a new signature by itself.

Offline storage is useful but not sufficient

Keeping a key on a hardware device reduces exposure to malware and makes extraction harder. It does not change the mathematics of the signature scheme. If the device continues signing with ECDSA or Schnorr, it remains dependent on that scheme even when it is disconnected from the internet. Treat “air-gapped,” “cold,” and “offline” as custody and malware-resistance features, not as proof of post-quantum security.

What an upgradeable wallet should be able to do

  • Receive authenticated firmware and application updates, with a documented verification and rollback or recovery process.
  • Add new signature algorithms or account types without forcing you to buy a completely different device, when the hardware has sufficient capability.
  • Display which algorithm, account format, network, and derivation path a transaction uses.
  • Guide a controlled migration, including destination verification, fee estimation, and confirmation that the old and new accounts belong to you.
  • Preserve a recoverable backup model when the network changes. A seed that restores only legacy accounts is not a complete migration plan.

Where the standards and blockchains stand in 2026

Standards and protocol work are advancing, but consumer-wallet support is not yet a finished product category.

Area Current position What it means when choosing a wallet
NIST post-quantum standards NIST finalized three standards on 2024-08-13: FIPS 203 ML-KEM, FIPS 204 ML-DSA, and FIPS 205 SLH-DSA. ML-DSA and SLH-DSA are signature standards. ML-KEM is a key-encapsulation standard, not a drop-in transaction-signature format. A wallet claiming support should identify the exact algorithm and how a target blockchain uses it.
Ethereum Ethereum describes ordinary ECDSA accounts as quantum-vulnerable in the long term, especially after a transaction exposes the public key. Its roadmap includes a post-quantum key registry, wallet-verifiable post-quantum signatures, and later consensus changes. Structured core milestones target approximately 2029, while full migration extends beyond that. These are planning milestones, not guarantees. Wallet software is expected to guide users through migration when post-quantum signatures are supported, so updateability and a clear Ethereum migration plan matter more than a present-day label.
Bitcoin BIP-361 proposes a phased sunset of legacy ECDSA and Schnorr signatures. BIP-361 is a proposal, not an activated Bitcoin rule. Any transition would require coordination among wallets, exchanges, miners, and custodians. A wallet should explain how it will support new script or descriptor types if the proposal or a successor is adopted.
Consumer devices No mainstream consumer wallet in the cited documentation is established as producing production Bitcoin or Ethereum transactions with finalized NIST post-quantum signatures. Buy for a credible upgrade path and operational discipline, not for a claim that your current account is already quantum-resistant.

Ethereum’s work is active: its 2026 updates cite more than 10 client teams in weekly post-quantum interoperability devnets and a $1 million Poseidon Prize for hash-based cryptographic research. Those signals show engineering progress, not a date on which every wallet will be migrated.

The six checks that matter when comparing wallets

Check Questions to ask Evidence worth accepting
Firmware and app updates Can the device receive signed firmware? How are releases authenticated? What happens if an update fails? Can the companion app update independently? A published update procedure, release history, security advisories, and recovery instructions that you can read before purchase.
Code transparency Can independent reviewers inspect the device firmware, bootloader, desktop or mobile app, and build process? Public source code or a documented independent review. Open source is not a guarantee of safety, but it makes claims testable.
Seed durability and restore Which seed standard and derivation paths are used? Can you restore on another supported implementation? What happens when a new account type is introduced? Exact backup and restore documentation, a test-restore procedure, and a durable offline backup plan.
Network and account coverage Does it support the exact chains, token standards, script types, account abstraction features, and derivation paths you use? A maintained compatibility directory and network-specific documentation, not a static marketing list.
Signature agility and migration Has the vendor described new algorithms, account or script formats, firmware capacity, and a migration flow for each chain? A dated technical plan that names the network, algorithm or format, release mechanism, and user actions.
Future transaction economics How will larger post-quantum signatures affect transaction size, fees, QR codes, USB or Bluetooth transfers, and confirmation time? Technical notes or testnet results that state assumptions. “Quantum-safe” without size, fee, and network details is incomplete.

How to choose a wallet step by step

  1. List your actual assets and account models. Write down every chain, token standard, multisignature arrangement, smart-account feature, and derivation path you use. A wallet that supports one network’s legacy account but not its future account type is not upgrade-ready for your use case.
  2. Read the recovery procedure before buying. Confirm the seed format, supported word lengths, passphrase behavior, and whether restoring on a replacement device recreates every account. Perform a test restore with a small balance before relying on the wallet. Never type a hardware-wallet seed into a website, chat, cloud note, or ordinary computer.
  3. Verify signed firmware updates. Look for a documented installation path, authenticity checks, release notes, and a recovery method if an update is interrupted. Firmware updates are not optional maintenance: Trezor’s documentation states that updating firmware is essential for long-term security. A vendor that cannot explain how updates are authenticated is a poor candidate for a future cryptographic transition.
  4. Inspect the code and review history. Prefer software that is open source or independently reviewable. Check whether the public repository covers the security-critical device code, not just a marketing website or a small utility. Review how vulnerabilities are disclosed and how quickly fixes reach users.
  5. Ask the vendor precise migration questions. Request answers to: Which new signature algorithms could the device implement? Will new Ethereum account types or Bitcoin script and descriptor formats be supported? Will the seed derive both legacy and post-quantum accounts? How will the screen identify a migration transaction? What happens if the network changes before the vendor releases an update? Reject a one-word answer such as “quantum-safe.”
  6. Check a maintained compatibility directory. Do not rely on an old box or reseller listing. Ethereum.org says its wallet directory is actively maintained, security-reviewed or open-source-reviewed, and re-verified every six months. Its 2026-10-15 directory lists Trezor as a hardware wallet. Verify the entry and the vendor documentation for the exact network and account model you need.
  7. Model future transaction costs and usability. Post-quantum signatures can be larger than today’s signatures, which may increase transaction bytes, fees, QR-code size, transfer time, and the amount of data shown by a signing device. Ask whether the wallet can batch operations, estimate the new fee correctly, and display a human-readable destination when the payload grows.
  8. Practice the recovery and migration path. Keep a small test balance, update the device through the official process, restore it from the offline seed, and confirm that the same addresses and account labels return. This rehearsal reveals whether your backup, passphrase notes, and app setup are sufficient before a protocol deadline creates pressure.

Hardware-wallet signals, using Trezor as a documented example

Trezor documents offline key storage, open-source software, firmware updates, and a publicly auditable approach to device code. Those are the right categories of evidence when evaluating upgradeability. Its documentation also describes the Safe 7, released in 2025, as having a “quantum-ready architecture.” That phrase should be read narrowly: the cited documentation does not establish production post-quantum transaction signing on Bitcoin or Ethereum. It is an architectural signal, not proof that an account has already migrated.

The same documentation says, “At Trezor, we believe in transparency through open-source software.” Verify what is actually public, which components are reviewed, and whether the release you install corresponds to the code you inspected. A public repository does not remove the need to verify downloaded firmware and protect the recovery seed.

Backups are part of upgradeability

A migration can fail operationally even when the cryptography is sound. Store the recovery seed offline in a durable medium, keep it away from the device, and document any passphrase or account-path details separately without exposing the seed. Trezor recommends its Keep Metal plate for disaster resistance. Whether you use that product or another durable medium, the requirement is the same: the backup must survive fire, water, loss, and years of storage while remaining inaccessible to online attackers.

Chain-specific questions to ask

Ethereum

Ethereum’s guidance distinguishes the present threat from the long-term design problem: ordinary ECDSA accounts are expected to become quantum-vulnerable, particularly once a public key has been exposed by spending. The roadmap’s proposed key registry, wallet-verifiable post-quantum signatures, and later consensus changes imply several coordinated releases rather than a single app switch. Choose software that can identify the account type, show whether a transaction uses legacy or post-quantum authorization, and guide you through a verified transfer when Ethereum activates the relevant features.

Use fresh addresses where the network’s guidance recommends limiting public-key exposure, and avoid assuming that an address format alone proves the underlying signature is post-quantum. Follow official Ethereum and wallet instructions when a migration is activated; do not respond to unsolicited messages offering an early upgrade.

Bitcoin

BIP-361 proposes a phased sunset of legacy ECDSA and Schnorr signatures. Because it is not an active consensus rule, no wallet can honestly promise that the proposal’s dates or exact mechanism will become final. A future Bitcoin transition could require new script types, descriptors, address formats, fee policies, and coordination with exchanges and custodians. Your wallet should be able to add those formats through authenticated updates and export or display the necessary recovery information.

Other networks

For every additional chain, ask the same questions independently. Does the chain have a post-quantum proposal or activated format? Which signature algorithm is specified? Are smart contracts, multisignature wallets, hardware signing, and popular software libraries updated? A device can be post-quantum-ready for one network and entirely legacy for another.

What a migration will change for users

Post-quantum signatures may be substantially larger than today’s signatures. Larger transactions can consume more block space, raise fees during congestion, lengthen transfer times, and make animated QR or air-gapped workflows less convenient. Hardware displays may need pagination or a different way to summarize a transaction. Wallets may also need new address encodings, account labels, descriptor syntax, and fee-estimation rules.

Those costs are not reasons to avoid upgrades; they are reasons to demand clear UX. A competent wallet should warn when you are sending from a legacy account, identify the destination’s account type, calculate fees using the new transaction format, and let you verify the complete destination rather than an opaque hash. It should also explain whether a migration is a normal spend, a protocol-mandated conversion, or a one-time network operation.

A practical scoring framework

Use this worksheet to compare finalists. The percentages are a buying aid, not a protocol standard. Score each category from zero to five, multiply by the weight, and keep notes linking each score to a dated document.

Category Suggested weight Full-score evidence
Authenticated updates and recovery 25% Signed firmware, transparent release process, interruption recovery, and a tested restore procedure.
Code transparency and review 20% Public security-critical code plus meaningful independent review and vulnerability disclosure.
Seed and account portability 15% Documented seed standard, derivation paths, passphrase handling, and restoration on supported replacement devices.
Current network coverage 15% Maintained listings for every chain and account model you actually use.
Published migration plan 20% Named algorithms, formats, firmware requirements, user flow, and chain-specific responsibilities.
Future transaction UX 5% Documented handling for larger signatures, fee estimation, QR or cable transfer, and on-device verification.

Do not let a high score for current coin support compensate for a zero in updates or recovery. A device that cannot be safely updated is disqualified from a post-quantum strategy, regardless of how many assets it lists today.

Red flags and how to respond

  • “Quantum-safe” with no algorithm or network: Ask which signature standard, account format, and released firmware are meant. If the answer is missing, treat the claim as marketing.
  • A static compatibility list: Check the network’s maintained directory and the wallet’s current release notes. Support can disappear when a chain changes its account model.
  • Firmware updates through an unverified file: Stop and use the vendor’s authenticated updater. Never install a file supplied through an unsolicited message.
  • A seed requested by support: Legitimate support cannot need your recovery words. Move funds to a new, verified wallet if the seed has been exposed.
  • A migration link or “claim” transaction: Verify announcements through the blockchain project and wallet’s official channels. Quantum transitions will create convincing phishing opportunities.
  • Confusing ML-KEM with a transaction signature: ML-KEM is a key-encapsulation standard. Ask how signatures are produced and verified on the specific chain.
  • No plan for larger transactions: Require fee, display, and transfer details. A mathematically sound algorithm can still produce an unusable wallet experience if payload growth is ignored.

How to maintain the wallet after purchase

  1. Subscribe to the vendor’s security and release notices, and install authenticated firmware updates promptly after verifying the release through the official channel.
  2. Keep the seed offline and test a restore periodically with a small balance. Never photograph or cloud-sync it.
  3. Review the supported-network directory at least twice a year and whenever a chain announces a cryptographic change.
  4. Avoid address reuse where the chain’s guidance warns that spending exposes a public key. Record which accounts are legacy and which are migrated.
  5. When a migration is announced, read the network specification and wallet release notes, update first, verify the destination on the device screen, and perform a small test transaction before moving the remainder.
  6. After migration, keep the old account information until the network confirms that legacy spending is safe or disabled. Do not destroy a backup merely because the app hides the old account.

Bottom line

The best choice today is an updateable, reviewable wallet with a durable recovery process and a documented plan for the chains you use. Current evidence does not show a mainstream consumer wallet already signing production Bitcoin or Ethereum transactions with finalized NIST post-quantum signatures. Treat Trezor’s documented firmware process, open-source approach, offline storage, and the Safe 7’s 2025 “quantum-ready architecture” as examples of useful signals—but verify the exact release and network support, and do not confuse architectural readiness with an activated post-quantum account. Your protection comes from maintaining the device, guarding the seed, and following an official migration when the protocol—not a marketing label—makes it available.
