For crypto you plan to hold for years, compare wallets by custody, asset and network support, offline key protection, recovery, maintenance, and how safely you can use them after a long gap. A self-custody hardware wallet can reduce online exposure, but it does not remove the risk of theft, loss, or mistakes: you remain responsible for the keys and recovery information.

What a crypto wallet actually stores

A wallet manages the keys used to authorize transactions; the crypto itself is recorded on the blockchain, not inside the device. The wallet application or device provides a way to manage an account and use its keys. Bitcoin.org explains wallet software and private keys, while ethereum.org distinguishes wallet apps, accounts, and keys.

With self-custody, you control the keys and take responsibility for protecting them and their backups. With a custodial account, a service controls the keys, so you rely on its security, solvency, and policies; account recovery may be more conventional, but it is not the same as personally holding the keys.

What is the difference between a hot wallet and a cold wallet?

A hot wallet is connected to the internet and is convenient for regular transactions. A cold wallet keeps signing keys offline; a hardware wallet is one common way to do this. Offline key storage can reduce exposure to online attacks, but it cannot prevent every kind of loss or theft. Bitcoin.org describes cold wallets as a safer choice for long-term storage, and ethereum.org also presents hardware wallets as an offline option. Bitcoin.org’s hot- and cold-wallet explanation and ethereum.org’s security guidance provide further detail.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

You do not have to use only one kind of wallet. One practical arrangement is a hot wallet for a small amount used for everyday spending and cold storage for longer-term savings. Each wallet has its own keys, so plan and protect recovery information for each separately.

How to compare wallets for long-term storage

Compare specific wallets against your assets, habits, and ability to preserve recovery information. A hardware wallet category is relevant, but no device is right for everyone, and a purchase alone does not guarantee safety.

What to check Questions to ask Why it matters
Custody Who controls the private keys: you or a service? Self-custody gives you direct control but makes you responsible for key security and backups. Custody by a service adds reliance on that provider.
Assets and networks Does the wallet support every coin, token, blockchain, and network feature you use? Support varies. Verify the exact asset and network combination rather than assuming a wallet supports it because it supports a related coin or chain.
Key isolation and signing Do signing keys stay offline? What transaction details can you review on the device? Can a connected phone or computer authorize a transaction alone? Understand where signing happens and what you must check before approving a transfer. In an offline-signing workflow, an offline device signs and an online device broadcasts the transaction.
Recovery What is backed up, how do you restore access after a device failure, and does the wallet use a recovery phrase? A backup is useful only if you can restore it correctly and keep it private. Check the wallet’s own documented recovery procedure.
Transparency and maintenance Is software or source code open to review? Is security testing documented? Is the product actively maintained, and where do updates and support come from? A device stored for years still depends on a sound, usable recovery path and appropriate maintenance.
Infrequent-use usability Can you safely operate the wallet and follow its recovery steps after a long period without using it? A complicated process can become a source of error. Hardware wallets may also be less suitable for mobile use.
Privacy and advanced controls Do you need multisignature approvals or particular privacy properties, and can you maintain the added complexity? For shared or larger holdings, multiple independent approvals may be useful, but they require careful management of multiple keys or devices.

For Ethereum-specific options, ethereum.org’s wallet directory offers network filters and sets listing criteria that include security testing, active maintenance, and support. Its listings are informational, not official endorsements; inclusion is not a guarantee of safety.

What is a recovery phrase, and how do you back up a wallet?

A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase—is sensitive information that can restore access to the keys associated with a wallet. Treat it like a master key: anyone who obtains it may be able to access the associated assets. ethereum.org warns: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!”

Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
  • Never give the phrase or a private key to a person, website, or someone claiming to be support.
  • Do not photograph the phrase or store it in cloud storage.
  • Keep recovery information securely offline. Consider how to avoid losing access if one copy or location is damaged or unavailable, without making the phrase easier for someone else to find.
  • Check what your specific wallet backs up and follow its official recovery instructions. Backup methods and compatibility vary; no particular physical medium is mandatory for every wallet.
  • Before moving substantial holdings, practice the documented recovery process where it is safe to do so, and consider a small test transaction.

A lost device may be recoverable if you have a valid backup and follow the wallet’s recovery procedure. If you lose both access to the wallet and the recovery information needed to restore it, self-custodied funds may be unrecoverable. Do not assume a wallet provider can recover a lost self-custody phrase.

How to use a long-term wallet safely

  1. Confirm support. Check the wallet’s current official documentation for each asset, network, and feature you intend to use.
  2. Learn the recovery process. Find out what information is required to restore the wallet after a device failure and where the official instructions are published.
  3. Set up and protect the backup. Follow the wallet’s instructions, keep recovery information offline and private, and make a plan for more than one possible failure—without putting the phrase in a cloud account or photo.
  4. Test the workflow. Learn how to review and approve a transaction on the device. Verify the destination address and transaction details before signing; Ethereum transactions, once sent, are irreversible.
  5. Transfer deliberately. Consider a small test transaction before transferring a substantial amount, then confirm the result before proceeding.
  6. Maintain the setup. Keep track of official update and recovery guidance, and ensure you can still access the instructions and any required companion software when you need them.

For custodial accounts, choose the service carefully and enable strong multifactor authentication where available. For self-custody, never enter a recovery phrase into a site or share it with a purported support worker.

When a hardware wallet may not be the right choice

A hardware wallet may be a poor fit if it does not support your assets or networks, if you cannot reliably protect recovery information, or if you are not comfortable managing keys and following the recovery process. A custodial service shifts key management to a provider but introduces dependence on that provider. A hot wallet can be more convenient for frequent transactions, though it keeps the wallet connected. Choose based on the risks and responsibilities you can realistically manage, rather than assuming one custody model suits every holder.
