Choose for the device you’ll play on first, then verify that the exact controller model connects to it by Bluetooth or USB. Xbox Cloud Gaming requires a compatible controller for most games; touch controls are available only in select titles. The Xbox Wireless Controller is a practical starting point, but no controller should be assumed to work with every phone, computer, TV, or headset.
Start with the device you’ll use
Xbox Cloud Gaming is available on supported Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and select Meta Quest headsets. The supported-device list and game availability can vary by region and plan, so check Xbox’s cloud gaming page for your setup.
Compatibility depends on the combination of controller and device, not just the controller’s brand. Xbox says its controllers can connect to most compatible phones and tablets by Bluetooth or wire, but that does not establish that every model works with every platform. Check Xbox’s verified-controller guidance and the device maker’s connection requirements before buying.
Choose how the controller will connect
Xbox lists a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB as a cloud-gaming requirement. Pick the method supported by both your controller and target device:

- Bluetooth: avoids a cable and can suit phones, tablets, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. Confirm that the exact controller and device support pairing with each other.
- USB: provides a wired setup. Check that your device has a compatible port or that you have the appropriate adapter.
There is no basis here for claiming Bluetooth is always faster or better than USB. Choose based on compatibility, convenience, and how you want to play.
Pick a setup for phone play
For a phone, decide whether you want a separate controller or a controller designed to hold the phone. Either way, confirm the phone fits the setup and that the controller works with its operating system.

Separate controller and phone mount
If you already own a compatible controller, a stand or clip can hold your phone while you play. Check the accessory’s dimensions and compatibility with both your phone and controller; an included clip on one model does not establish that separate mounts fit every controller.
Controller with an integrated phone clip
The Turtle Beach Recon Cloud Hybrid Controller is one documented Android-focused example. Turtle Beach specifies wired use with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PCs, and Bluetooth use with Android 8.0 or later devices and Windows PCs. Its adjustable clip is specified to fit most smartphones 47–90 mm wide. Consider accessibility and custom inputs
The Xbox Adaptive Controller is a hub intended primarily for players with limited mobility. It accepts separate switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks through 3.5 mm jacks and USB ports, allowing a setup to be configured around a player’s needs. It is not necessarily a complete setup on its own: assistive inputs are separate devices.
Xbox lists Bluetooth or USB connections for Windows 10/11 PCs, select smart TVs, iOS, and Android. Check the Xbox Adaptive Controller page for supported-device details and the inputs needed for your configuration.

When touch controls are an option
Some Xbox Cloud Gaming titles support touch controls, so a separate controller may not be necessary for those games. Support is limited to select games; check whether the specific title you want to play offers touch controls rather than assuming they are available across the catalog.

Check the setup before you buy
- Identify the target device. Confirm that it supports Xbox Cloud Gaming and note its operating system and available ports.
- Find the exact controller model. Don’t rely on a broad label such as “Xbox compatible”; check the model against Xbox’s verified-controller guidance and the manufacturer’s device list.
- Confirm the connection method. Make sure both the controller and device support Bluetooth pairing or the wired USB connection you plan to use.
- For phone play, check the physical fit. Verify the phone’s width against an integrated clip’s stated range, or check a separate mount’s dimensions and compatibility.
- For accessibility, list the inputs you need. Confirm which switches, buttons, mounts, or joysticks are separate components and how they connect to the Adaptive Controller.
- Check service requirements. Xbox’s cloud gaming FAQ says a supported device, a compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB (except for select touch-control games), and a Wi-Fi or LTE connection meeting its stated minimum are required. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and notes that some devices may need more bandwidth for best quality. These are Xbox’s guidance, not a guarantee of stream quality in every home.
