Start with the model number printed on the console, not the retail name. A PS5 replacement drive is compatible only within specific CFI model groups, while a PS4 optical-drive replacement must match the console’s CUH family and, on original 1XXX systems, the optical-drive daughterboard. Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 add-on drive is for PS5 CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups; it is not compatible with the CFI-1000 Digital Edition. For PS4, BDP-020 and BDP-025 are the documented cross-compatible daughterboard pair, while the other original-drive markings must match. PS4 Slim listings also need a cable check, and PS5 drive electronics may need to remain paired with the motherboard.
Why the model number matters more than “PS4” or “PS5”
PlayStation consoles that share a retail name can use different drive assemblies, brackets, cables, firmware relationships and circuit boards. A listing titled “PS4 optical drive” or “PS5 Slim disc drive” is therefore not enough to establish compatibility. Record the complete identifier from the console chassis before you search for a part:
- PS5: look for a CFI model number, such as CFI-1000, CFI-2000 or CFI-7000.
- PS4: look for a CUH model number, such as a CUH-10xx, CUH-12xx or CUH-20xx family identifier.
- Original PS4 drive: also record the BDP marking on the optical-drive daughterboard: BDP-010, BDP-015, BDP-020 or BDP-025.
Photograph the label and the original drive before ordering. The final characters in a model family can identify a regional or hardware variation, so retain them rather than shortening the number to “PS4 Slim” or “PS5.”
PS5: identify the CFI group before buying a drive
CFI-ZDD1 compatibility is limited to two model groups
Sony PlayStation Support states: “Please note, the disc drive is compatible only with PS5® consoles (CFI-2000/7000 model group).” Treat that as a hard compatibility rule for the CFI-ZDD1 add-on drive.

| PS5 model group | CFI-ZDD1 add-on drive | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CFI-2000 | Compatible | Confirm that the listing is the CFI-ZDD1 drive and that all required covers, screws and cables are included. |
| CFI-7000 | Compatible | Confirm the exact console submodel and the contents of the listing before purchase. |
| CFI-1000 Digital Edition | Not compatible with CFI-ZDD1 | Do not order the CFI-ZDD1 for this console; search only for a part explicitly documented for the CFI-1000 hardware. |
A seller’s use of “PS5 Slim,” “new PS5” or “all digital PS5” does not replace the CFI check. The CFI-1000 Digital Edition exclusion is especially important because a drive advertised for a newer detachable-drive model is not a universal upgrade for the earlier digital console.
Understand the PS5 motherboard-pairing issue
Drive compatibility is not only a matter of the connector and the plastic housing. In its PS5 teardown summary, iFixit reports: “Our test results indicate that the PS5’s optical drive is paired to its motherboard.” That means a drive-only swap can leave the console unable to use discs even when the replacement physically fits.
When comparing PS5 parts, look for a clear statement about the paired electronics. Ask the seller whether the replacement includes the correct electronic board, whether the original electronics must be retained, and whether any pairing procedure is required. Do not assume that moving only the mechanical drive, laser, or outer assembly transfers the identity the console expects.

Keep the original PS5 drive and its electronics until the replacement has been proven compatible. If a listing is vague about pairing, board transfer or the relationship between the drive and motherboard, treat that uncertainty as a reason to choose a different listing or use a repair service that can address the pairing requirement.
PS4: match both the CUH family and the drive electronics
Original PS4 1XXX consoles use BDP daughterboard identifiers
For original PS4 1XXX models, identify the marking on the optical-drive daughterboard before you order an assembly. The documented identifiers are BDP-010, BDP-015, BDP-020 and BDP-025.
| Original daughterboard marking | Selection rule |
|---|---|
| BDP-010 | Use a replacement documented for BDP-010 unless the seller provides specific evidence of compatibility. |
| BDP-015 | Use a replacement documented for BDP-015 unless the seller provides specific evidence of compatibility. |
| BDP-020 | Cross-compatible with BDP-025 according to the iFixit documentation. |
| BDP-025 | Cross-compatible with BDP-020 according to the iFixit documentation. |
The iFixit PS4 guide summarizes the requirement this way: “You can replace the the optical drive assembly by itself, but the replacement assembly must be compatible with the your optical drive daughterboard.” In practical terms, BDP-020 and BDP-025 form the documented cross-compatible pair; BDP-010 and BDP-015 should not be treated as interchangeable merely because the assemblies look similar.

PS4 Slim CUH-20xx listings need a cable check
PS4 Slim consoles in the CUH-20xx family have a different selection problem from the original 1XXX systems. Confirm that the assembly is intended for your exact regional and model family, then check whether the listing includes the flex cables and any required brackets or screws.
The iFixit PS4 Slim guide notes that the original flex cables may need to be transferred to the replacement. A drive can therefore be the correct mechanical assembly while still leaving you without the cable needed to connect it. If the listing does not say which cables are included, ask before ordering and compare the cable ends with the parts inside your console.
The PS4 Slim guide consulted for this procedure was updated January 3, 2026. Use the current model and part markings in your console as the deciding evidence, not the date of a marketplace listing.
A step-by-step replacement-drive selection workflow
- Record the console label. Unplug the console, turn it over or inspect the rear and underside label, and write down the complete CFI or CUH number. Photograph it so the final digits remain readable.
- Record the original drive identifiers. On an original PS4, photograph the BDP-010, BDP-015, BDP-020 or BDP-025 marking on the daughterboard. For a PS4 Slim or PS5, photograph the drive label, connector layout, cables and mounting points before removal.
- Apply the PS5 model-group rule. If the console is CFI-2000 or CFI-7000, continue with a CFI-ZDD1 listing. If it is a CFI-1000 Digital Edition, reject that listing rather than hoping a firmware update or adapter will make it work.
- Apply the original-PS4 BDP rule. For a 1XXX console, match the daughterboard marking. Accept BDP-020 or BDP-025 only where the listing or documentation supports that cross-compatibility; require an exact match for the other markings.
- Apply the PS4 Slim cable rule. For a CUH-20xx Slim, verify the regional/model family and determine whether flex cables are supplied. Plan to transfer the original cables only if they are undamaged and the guide for your assembly calls for that transfer.
- Check PS5 electronics and pairing. Confirm whether the seller addresses motherboard pairing and whether the original electronic board must be retained. A mechanical drive-only listing is not automatically a complete repair.
- Compare the physical contents. Check for the required flex cables, brackets, screws, covers and connectors. A part that matches electronically but lacks a proprietary cable may still be unusable without transferring the original.
- Read the return terms. Confirm that the return policy covers an incompatibility discovered after comparing the part with your original hardware. Keep all packaging and do not discard the old drive until testing is complete.
How to compare two candidate parts
Price should be considered only after the compatibility checks pass. Use the following order when two listings appear similar:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Comparison point | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Console model-group match | Does the listing name the exact CFI or CUH family? | A retail name such as “PS5 Slim” or “PS4” covers multiple hardware revisions. |
| Drive or daughterboard identifier | Does the part match the BDP marking or documented cross-compatible pair? | Original PS4 assemblies are not universally interchangeable. |
| Flex cables and brackets | Are the required cables, screws and mounting pieces included? | PS4 Slim repairs may require the original flex cables, and missing hardware can stop installation. |
| Region or market limitation | Does the listing specify the same regional/model family as the console? | Model suffixes and assemblies can vary by market. |
| Electronic transfer or pairing | Must the original board be moved, or must the replacement be paired? | PS5 optical-drive electronics are reported to be paired to the motherboard. |
| Return coverage | Can you return the part if the identifier or included hardware does not match? | Compatibility cannot be established from appearance alone. |
If any of the first five checks fails, a lower price does not make the part a better choice. Save screenshots of the listing’s model claims and included contents in case the delivered part differs from the description.

Tools and preparation before opening a PS4
The PS4 repair guide lists four tools:
- Tweezers for small connectors and cable ends.
- A Phillips #0 screwdriver.
- A non-marring spudger for separating clips and lifting connectors.
- A TR8 Torx security screwdriver for security screws.
Select tools for the fasteners in the guide for your exact console revision. A standard Torx driver is not necessarily suitable for a security screw with a center pin, and an oversized Phillips driver can damage a small screw head.
Before opening the console, unplug it from power and disconnect every external cable. Work on a clean, well-lit surface. Photograph cable routing and connector orientation at each stage, and place screws in labeled containers so screws from different covers are not mixed.
Keep the original daughterboard, flex cables and drive with the console until the replacement passes testing. These parts are evidence of the console’s original configuration and may be needed for a return, a second repair attempt or a board transfer.
The iFixit PS4 guide used for these instructions was updated July 1, 2024. Its tool list is a preparation reference, not a guarantee that every regional revision uses identical fasteners.

Once the part has passed the model and identifier checks, compare it with the old assembly before disconnecting anything permanently:
- Match connector positions and cable lengths.
- Compare screw holes, brackets and guide rails.
- Check that the included flex cables have the same contacts and reach as the originals.
- On a PS4, verify the replacement’s daughterboard marking against the documented compatibility rule.
- On a PS5, verify which electronics are being retained and how the listing handles motherboard pairing.
After reassembly, perform a controlled test before closing the repair area permanently. Confirm that the console starts normally, accepts a known-good disc, recognizes it, reads it and ejects it without unusual resistance. If the console displays an error, stop repeated insertion and removal attempts; return to the model, cable, daughterboard and pairing checks instead of forcing the mechanism.

What common failure symptoms usually indicate
The console powers on but does not recognize the replacement
Recheck the exact console model and the drive identifier. On a PS5, this symptom can be consistent with an unresolved motherboard-pairing requirement. On an original PS4, verify that the daughterboard is not an unsupported BDP combination. On a Slim, inspect the flex-cable connection and confirm whether the original cable had to be transferred.

Stop and compare the listing’s included parts with the original assembly. A physical fit does not prove that the assembly belongs to the same regional or model family. For PS4 Slim repairs, the missing item may be an original flex cable rather than the drive mechanism itself.
The replacement arrives with a different board marking
Do not install it solely because the seller called it a PS4 drive. For an original 1XXX console, BDP-020 and BDP-025 are the documented cross-compatible pair; other markings require their own match. Photograph the delivered marking and use the return policy if it does not meet the stated compatibility.
A PS5 listing says “drive only” without discussing electronics
Treat the listing as incomplete for a console whose optical-drive electronics are paired to the motherboard. Ask whether the original board must be transferred and whether the seller supports the exact CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 model group. If those answers are unavailable, do not assume the part will function after installation.
Questions to ask a seller before ordering
- Which exact CFI or CUH models has this part been tested or documented for?
- For an original PS4, which BDP daughterboard markings are supported?
- For a PS4 Slim, are the flex cables, brackets and screws included, or must the original parts be transferred?
- For a PS5, does the part include the required electronics, and how is motherboard pairing handled?
- Is the part new, refurbished or removed from another console, and does the return policy cover incompatibility?
- Does the listing identify a regional or market limitation?
Save the answers with the order information. If the seller responds only with “fits all PS4” or “fits all PS5,” that is not a model-specific compatibility statement.

Quick decision checklist
- Console label recorded: complete CFI or CUH number.
- Original drive or daughterboard marking photographed.
- PS5 CFI-ZDD1 restricted to CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups.
- CFI-1000 Digital Edition excluded from the CFI-ZDD1 choice.
- Original PS4 BDP-020 and BDP-025 treated as the documented cross-compatible pair.
- Other original PS4 BDP markings matched exactly unless documentation says otherwise.
- PS4 Slim CUH-20xx regional/model family verified.
- PS4 Slim flex-cable inclusion or transfer requirement confirmed.
- PS5 motherboard-pairing and original-electronics requirements answered.
- Screws, brackets, cables and return coverage confirmed before payment.
Following this sequence prevents the most expensive mistake: buying a drive that is mechanically similar but electronically or model-wise incompatible. The correct part is the one that matches the console identifier, the original drive electronics and every required cable or bracket—not simply the one with the lowest price or the most general marketplace title.
