The compatible external drive depends on your exact Panasonic recorder model and the country or region where it was sold. Check the recorder’s full DMR model number against Panasonic’s local USB-HDD compatibility list before buying; brand, capacity, and a USB 3.0 label alone do not establish compatibility.
Start with the full recorder model number
Find the complete DMR model code on the recorder’s label or in its settings/about screen. Then open Panasonic’s support page for that precise model and regional market. Panasonic publishes model-specific lists, and listed capacities and recording features can differ between recorder families.
For example, Panasonic Japan’s list updated February 13, 2025, names the Buffalo HDV-SAM4.0U3-BKA, a 4TB USB 3.0 drive, for the recorder family covered by that page. The same support material lists selected Buffalo 3TB and 4TB models and Panasonic DY-HD2000 at 2TB. These are examples for the models named on the applicable lists, not universal recommendations for every 4K DIGA. Check the drive against what you plan to record
A drive appearing on a compatibility list does not necessarily mean every recording mode works the same way. Before choosing, check the list and model documentation for your intended use: ordinary recording, simultaneous recording, channel recording, or 4K broadcast recording. Panasonic documents simultaneous-recording combinations separately for 4K DIGA models in its simultaneous recording guidance.

For the listed 4K DIGA families, 4K broadcasts cannot be recorded or dubbed to a SeeQVault-formatted USB HDD. If 4K broadcast recording is important, use the format and drive type Panasonic specifies for the exact recorder rather than assuming a SeeQVault drive is suitable. Panasonic’s 4K recording compatibility guidance identifies the models and supported drives it covers.
Match the USB connection to the recorder
Where Panasonic specifies USB 3.0, connect the drive to the recorder’s USB 3.0 port with a USB 3.0-compatible cable. Panasonic’s guidance for covered models says that using a front USB 2.0 port or a cable that is not USB 3.0-compatible can result in USB 2.0 operation. The port and cable therefore matter even when the drive itself supports USB 3.0.

Plan for registration and formatting
Panasonic says a USB-HDD must be registered with the DIGA before use. Its FAQ says the recorder can register eight drives, or seven on some models, but only one USB-HDD can be connected for use at a time. Check the rule for your model in Panasonic’s USB-HDD recording and supported-drive FAQ.
Do not treat the external drive as a portable library of ordinary video files. Recordings may be tied to the recorder and its registration; verify the model’s rules before buying if you need to move recordings between recorders or access them on a computer.

Use the local list, not generic drive specifications
A PC-compatible external drive, a higher-capacity drive, or a drive advertised as USB 3.0 is not automatically supported for recording. Confirm the exact product code on Panasonic’s list for your DMR model and region, then check capacity, recording-mode support, and the required port and cable. Panasonic’s Australian support page illustrates why region matters: its connectable USB-HDD guidance for DIGA has different constraints from Panasonic Japan’s lists.
