Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A live ratio calculator is convenient, not essential: you can track coffee and water manually. The right choice depends on your brewing setup and the features you will actually use, not on a generic “coffee scale” label.
What a brew ratio measures
A brew ratio compares the mass of dry coffee with the mass of water. For example, HARIO UK’s September 18, 2026 guide uses 1:16 to illustrate 15 g of coffee with 240 g of water. Treat that as a starting example, not a universal ideal; your preferred recipe depends on the coffee and your taste. Read HARIO’s pour-over guide.
Weighing is more consistent than using a scoop: HARIO notes that grind size and bean origin affect density, so the same scoop volume can contain different masses. Measuring coffee and water by weight gives you a repeatable basis for adjusting a recipe.
Check fit and capacity before features
Consider the complete setup, not just the coffee. For pour-over, the platform should accommodate the dripper and carafe together, while leaving the display visible. For espresso, check the drip-tray footprint and the clearance for your cup. Add the weight of the brewer or vessel, coffee, and water, then compare that total with the scale’s maximum load.

Physical dimensions matter just as much as capacity. A scale that fits on a counter may not fit beneath an espresso machine or leave room for a portafilter, cup, or carafe. Use the manufacturer’s product specifications to check both the platform footprint and available height.
Prioritize readable tenths of a gram
A display in 0.1 g increments makes it practical to weigh small doses and watch incremental pours. However, display resolution and accuracy are not interchangeable: a screen can show tenths without establishing that every reading is accurate to a tenth. Manufacturer specifications are claims from the manufacturer, not independent test results.

For example, TIMEMORE states that the Basic 3.0 has 0.1 g accuracy from 0.2–500 g, a 1 g variance from 500–1,000 g, and a 3 g variance from 1,000–2,000 g, with a 2,000 g maximum load. Those qualifications matter if you plan to weigh a heavy carafe and brewer together. See TIMEMORE’s Basic 3.0 specifications.
Decide whether an integrated timer helps
If your recipe specifies pour intervals or a total brew time, an integrated timer keeps timing and weighing in one place. A manually started timer is straightforward; automatic timing may reduce steps, but its trigger depends on the model.

Choose a ratio calculator only if you want the guidance
A ratio calculator can translate a coffee dose and selected ratio into a target water weight, then show progress as you pour. HARIO’s POLARIS demonstration uses 20 g of coffee at 1:15 to calculate 300 g of target water; its display indicates how much of that target has been poured. The calculator applies the ratio you select—it does not decide which recipe tastes best.

Use the actual measurements to check whether the platform suits your brewer, vessel, or espresso machine. A larger filter-oriented format and a compact espresso-oriented setup may call for different footprints; Acaia’s comparison distinguishes those format needs, but fit still depends on your particular equipment. Quick Recap
A quick selection checklist
- For pour-over: Confirm the dripper and carafe fit together, the display remains visible, and the capacity handles the combined load.
- For espresso: Check drip-tray clearance, cup height, and the capacity needed for your cup and drink.
- For recipe repetition: Choose a timer if you use timed pours or track total brew time; check whether it starts manually or automatically.
- For simpler tracking: Pick a ratio calculator only if seeing the target water amount and pour progress on the scale is useful to you.
- For any method: Compare physical dimensions and stated accuracy ranges, and distinguish manufacturer specifications from independently verified performance.
