Start by checking whether the exact platforms and versions your friends own can join the same game mode together. A game released on several systems is not automatically cross-play compatible, and cross-play does not guarantee that you can invite friends, share progress, or use every mode together. Confirm those details first; then weigh play style, group size, setup, and cost.
1. List everyone’s platform and game version
Write down each player’s device, console generation, and storefront or edition. “PlayStation” or “Xbox” alone may not be specific enough: a game can separate older and newer console generations, exclude a platform, or treat PC storefronts differently.

EA SPORTS FC is a useful example of why the details matter. EA’s support page groups PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S together for cross-play, and separately groups PS4 and Xbox One; Switch and Switch 2 are excluded from cross-play. Confirm the game’s current platform groupings and the mode you want on EA’s cross-play support page.
2. Confirm cross-play for the actual mode you want
Look for the game’s official FAQ or support page and verify the exact combination of platforms in your group. Then check that it supports the kind of play you want—such as a shared campaign, survival or building, action missions, sports, or casual party play. A general “cross-platform” label may describe matchmaking without confirming that friends can form a party or invite one another.

Rocket League’s official support documentation says players on Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam can cross-play in online match types, including private matches with friends on other platforms. Its cross-play setting is enabled by default. That is a clear example of documented friend play, not proof that another game works the same way. See Rocket League’s cross-platform play instructions.
Kiln illustrates the distinction from the other direction: Double Fine says matchmaking is cross-platform, while party formation depends on accounts. Its support page says PSN users can party only with PSN friends, while PC and Xbox players use Xbox accounts and can party together. Check the invitation and party rules—not just whether players can enter the same matchmaking pool—on Double Fine’s Kiln support page.
3. Find out how friends connect
Before anyone buys the game, check the steps for finding friends and sending invitations. Depending on the title, players may need an in-game ID, a publisher account, linked accounts, a cross-play setting, or a console privacy setting.
For Apex Legends, EA documents cross-platform parties across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, EA App, and Steam on PC. Players can search by username and invite friends. Its matchmaking pools also differ: console players share a pool, PC players use a PC pool, and a party combining console and PC players is placed in PC matches. EA notes an Xbox One system setting can affect cross-play. Check the current steps and rules in the Apex Legends FAQ.

The announcement also describes PC and console competitive matchmaking as separate pools. Because that page dates from 2021, use it as an example of the kinds of requirements to check, not as a substitute for current game support details: Blizzard’s cross-play announcement.
4. Check whether progress carries across platforms
Cross-play means players on different platforms can play together under the game’s rules; it does not necessarily mean a player can move a character, save, unlocks, or collection from one platform to another.
Amazon Games’ New World: Aeternum FAQ lists Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and Steam PC players on the same server, but says characters remain locked to the platform where they were created. Blizzard’s 2021 Overwatch announcement likewise says cross-play does not move progress and collection content between systems. Verify the game’s current account and progression policy if anyone expects to switch platforms: New World: Aeternum FAQ and Blizzard’s announcement.

Once compatibility is confirmed, compare candidates on the things that determine whether your group will actually enjoy playing together:
Recommended Free Tools
- Play style: Decide whether you want a shared story, repeatable missions, survival and building, sports, or short party sessions.
- Group fit: Check the supported party size and whether everyone can join the same session or campaign.
- Time and difficulty: Match typical session length and challenge level to the group’s schedules and experience.
- Communication and accessibility: Check available voice or text options and any accessibility features your friends need.
- Access costs: Verify the current price, regional availability, and any online subscription requirement for each platform. New World: Aeternum’s FAQ, for example, lists Game Pass Core for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation Plus for PS5. Requirements can vary by platform and may change, so check the current official listing before buying.
6. Make the decision before anyone pays
- Write down each friend’s platform, console generation, storefront, and game edition.
- Shortlist games that fit the group’s preferred co-op style.
- For each candidate, open its official support page and confirm the exact platform combination and desired co-op mode.
- Check party formation, friend search, account linking, privacy settings, and cross-play toggles.
- Verify player limits, subscriptions, regional availability, and current prices on the relevant official pages or store listings.
- Share any setup requirements with the group before anyone buys the game.
Cross-play support, modes, platform lists, account rules, and subscription requirements can change. Treat examples here as illustrations of what to verify, not a complete or permanent list of compatible games.
