For most teams, Google Cloud is the evidenced starting point for cloud TPUs because it publishes current documentation for TPU v5e, v5p, v6e (Trillium), and TPU7x (Ironwood), along with regional pricing, quota rules, and several capacity modes. A different provider is worth considering only after it confirms the exact TPU generation, region, quota, software stack, pricing, and support terms your workload requires.

Choose the TPU generation and the capacity mode together. The generation determines model fit, memory, communication speed, and scaling behavior; on-demand, Flex-start, Spot, reservations, and committed use determine interruption risk, lead time, and cost.

What a cloud TPU provider actually supplies

A cloud TPU is a Google-designed application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) exposed as a cloud resource rather than a card that you install in your own server. TPUs are optimized for the large matrix operations common in machine-learning training and inference. The service you buy includes more than accelerator silicon: you also depend on a host or virtual machine, a software image, networking, storage, quota, scheduling, monitoring, and a way to recover from failures.

That distinction matters when comparing providers. Two listings can both say “TPU” while offering different generations, host layouts, regions, framework versions, interruption policies, or support commitments. Compare a complete configuration, not a chip name in isolation.

Why Google Cloud is the practical baseline

Google Cloud currently publishes the broadest externally documented TPU range in this comparison: v5e, v5p, v6e (Trillium), and TPU7x (Ironwood). Its documentation also describes on-demand, Flex-start, Spot, reservations, and committed-use choices, plus TPU-specific quota requirements. That documentation makes Google Cloud the defensible default when you need a provider whose capabilities can be checked before you commit.

How to treat third-party TPU offers

Public lists of “TPU clouds” are leads, not proof of current capacity. Before signing up, ask the provider to identify the exact TPU generation, chip or host presentation, region, available quota, framework and compiler versions, interruption policy, service-level terms, storage and network charges, and support escalation path. If it cannot provide those details in writing, you cannot make a meaningful price or performance comparison.

Match the TPU generation to your workload

Start with the model and its operators, then select the generation that can hold the model and communicate efficiently at your intended scale. A newer TPU is not automatically the best choice if your framework, custom operations, or required region does not support it.

TPU v5e: a combined training and serving option

Google describes Cloud TPU v5e as a combined training and inference (serving) product. Its documentation distinguishes configurations optimized for training throughput and availability from serving configurations optimized for latency. The page documents JAX, TensorFlow, and PyTorch support, single-host inference, and multi-host training.

Choose v5e when you need one documented product family for both fine-tuning or training and production serving, especially when broad availability and a straightforward software path matter more than the newest per-chip specifications. Confirm the exact v5e topology and quota in your target zone before planning a large run.

TPU v6e (Trillium): higher per-chip resources for modern models

Google positions TPU v6e, code-named Trillium, for transformer, text-to-image, and convolutional-neural-network training, fine-tuning, and serving. The documented figures are per chip:

Metric TPU v6e (Trillium) Qualification
BF16 compute 918 TFLOPs Google-published per-chip figure
High-bandwidth memory 32 GB HBM Google-published per-chip figure
HBM bandwidth 1,638 GB/s Google-published per-chip figure
Bidirectional inter-chip bandwidth 800 GB/s Google-published per-chip figure

Those numbers help when estimating memory capacity and collective-communication needs, but they are not a performance guarantee for your model. Actual throughput depends on sequence length, batch size, precision, compiler behavior, input pipeline, parallelism, and utilization.

TPU v5p and TPU7x (Ironwood): large-scale communication and newest generation

Google’s general TPU guidance points to TPU7x and TPU v5p when fast inter-chip communication is required. Evaluate these generations for large-scale parallel training or when your architecture is already designed around pod-scale collectives. Verify software support, region, quota, and capacity before selecting either one; the newest generation can be less useful than a readily available generation that your stack already supports.

Ironwood is TPU7x. The current pricing snapshot lists Ironwood at $12.00 per chip-hour in us-central1. This is a volatile regional figure, not a universal price or a promise that capacity is available when you need it.

Use model and operator fit as the first filter

TPU selection is software-dependent. Confirm the complete path from your training code to the TPU compiler before comparing hourly rates.

Framework and compiler checks

  • Identify whether the workload runs through JAX, TensorFlow, or PyTorch/XLA, and record the exact versions you intend to deploy.
  • Check that the selected TPU generation and runtime image support those versions in the region and provisioning mode you plan to use.
  • Compile a representative training step or serving graph, not just a small synthetic kernel, and measure compilation time, memory use, and steady-state utilization.

Inventory code that may not map cleanly

List every custom CUDA operation, CPU-only operator, conditional branch, data-dependent control path, and precision requirement. Google warns that frequent branching, CPU-only operators, and FP64-heavy workloads can be poor TPU fits. Replace unsupported operators, keep them off the critical path, or prove that their fallback cost is acceptable before committing capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Precision and numerical behavior

Document the precision used for matrix operations, reductions, optimizer state, and evaluation. If a workload depends heavily on FP64 or on a CUDA-specific numerical behavior, assume porting and validation work until a TPU run demonstrates equivalence. A nominally faster chip cannot compensate for a model that spends much of its time waiting on unsupported operations or host transfers.

Choose topology and scale before buying hours

Determine whether the workload fits on one host, needs several hosts, or depends on pod-scale communication. Model memory, optimizer state, activation size, sequence length, checkpointing, and replication all affect the chip count.

Single-host workloads

Single-host inference or smaller fine-tuning jobs simplify scheduling and failure recovery. They are a sensible starting point for v5e serving and for validating a port. Measure end-to-end latency, including tokenization, input transfer, compilation, batching, and response handling.

Multi-host training

Distributed training requires a topology that keeps collective operations efficient. Select host count and chip count together, then test all-reduce and other collectives at the scale you intend to run. A configuration that looks inexpensive per chip can lose its advantage if communication dominates each step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Serving at scale

Decide whether your primary objective is latency, throughput, or a balance. Latency-sensitive serving favors predictable capacity and a topology that avoids queueing; throughput-oriented serving can benefit from larger batches and more replicas. v5e documentation explicitly separates training-oriented and serving-oriented configurations, so do not assume a training layout is the right production endpoint.

Understand TPU capacity modes

The same TPU generation can have very different operational behavior depending on how capacity is purchased.

Mode Best use Operational consequence
On-demand Urgent jobs or workloads with uncertain end dates Flexible, but Google does not guarantee availability
Flex-start Experiments, fine-tuning, dynamic inference provisioning, or runs up to seven days Designed to schedule a run within the stated Flex-start model; plan for waiting rather than instant capacity
Spot Checkpointed pre-training, simulation, and batch processing Lower price, but Spot VMs can be shut down at any time
Reservation Known future training or serving demand Stronger capacity assurance; Google documents future reservations up to 90 days
Committed use Sustained production or training demand Longer commitment in exchange for documented discounts relative to on-demand plans

When on-demand is appropriate

Use on-demand when the job is urgent, exploratory, or difficult to schedule in advance. Build a fallback plan because “on-demand” means flexible pricing and scheduling, not guaranteed TPU availability. Request quota early even when you intend to use on-demand.

When Flex-start is appropriate

Flex-start targets runs lasting up to seven days. It fits experiments and fine-tuning that can wait for placement but should not require a long-term reservation. Set a start deadline, make the run restartable, and ensure checkpoints are available before the scheduled window.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Spot is appropriate

Spot is suitable only when interruption is acceptable. Google states that Spot VMs can be shut down at any time and are available at a significantly lower price than on-demand resources. Save checkpoints to durable storage, make startup idempotent, and test restart time before estimating the job’s total cost.

When to reserve or commit

Use reservations for a known future window or committed use for sustained demand when missing capacity would cost more than paying for assurance. Compare the commitment term with your forecast; a discount does not help if utilization falls or the workload moves to another generation.

Compare cost on an end-to-end basis

Begin with the official regional per-chip-hour rate, multiply by chip count and runtime, and then add every other charge required to deliver a result.

estimated accelerator cost = chip-hour rate × chips × runtime hours

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then account for host or VM charges, boot and persistent storage, snapshots and checkpoints, networking, data transfer, and egress. Include idle time for compilation, queueing, autoscaling, and failed or restarted runs. For Spot, model expected interruptions rather than multiplying a discounted rate by an optimistic runtime.

Published examples and their limits

At the current pricing snapshot, Google lists Trillium at $2.70 per chip-hour in selected US regions and Ironwood at $12.00 per chip-hour in us-central1. These figures can change by generation, region, and purchase model; recheck the pricing page and console immediately before committing.

Check whether the console displays chip-hours or VM-hours. Google gives an example in which a TPU v4 host contains four chips and is displayed as a VM-hour. Multiplying a VM-hour price as though it were a single-chip price produces a fourfold error in that example.

Why a TPU headline rate is not a GPU comparison

Do not compare a TPU chip-hour with a GPU chip-hour until you have measured utilization and porting effort. A lower accelerator rate can be offset by compiler work, unsupported operators, poor batching, low utilization, data movement, storage, egress, or a larger required cluster. Run the same representative workload through the candidate stacks and compare cost per completed training step, tokens served, or successful job—not just hourly price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan quota, regions, and operations

Request the right quota

Google states that TPU quota is specific to TPU version, size, zone, and whether the request is on-demand or preemptible. Ask for the exact combination your deployment needs. A quota approval for one generation or zone does not imply approval for another.

Validate regional dependencies

List the region for TPU capacity, the region for datasets and checkpoints, and the region from which users will be served. Cross-region transfers can add latency and cost. A lower published chip-hour price is not necessarily cheaper if it forces frequent data movement or leaves you without a nearby storage and networking path.

Integrate with GKE deliberately

If you use Google Kubernetes Engine, validate multi-host networking, scheduling, observability, autoscaling behavior, and failure recovery with your own workload. Confirm that a failed worker or preempted slice produces the expected Kubernetes events and that checkpoints can be discovered automatically after restart.

Define observability before production

  • Track step time, compiler time, device utilization, memory pressure, input-pipeline wait, and collective-operation time.
  • Record queue and provisioning delays separately from execution time.
  • Alert on failed workers, repeated recompilation, checkpoint age, and serving latency or queue depth.
  • Attach generation, zone, host count, and capacity mode to every run so cost and performance comparisons remain interpretable.

Inference-specific decisions

Inference requirements differ from training requirements. Specify model size, context or sequence length, target latency, throughput, batching policy, concurrency, and availability objective before choosing a TPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Latency versus throughput

Low-latency interactive serving generally needs predictable capacity, warm workers, bounded queues, and a serving-oriented topology. High-throughput batch inference can trade latency for larger batches and use interruption-tolerant capacity if work can be replayed.

Interpreting the v6e performance figure

Google reports more than 3,500 tokens per second per v6e node for long-sequence, 70B-class inference in a 2025 blog post. This is a vendor-reported result, not an independent benchmark. Treat it as a reference point only: reproduce the test with your model, prompt distribution, sequence length, quantization or precision, batching, serving software, and measurement boundary.

Production safeguards

  • Warm and health-check workers before admitting traffic.
  • Set explicit queue, timeout, and retry limits so a slow device does not create an unbounded backlog.
  • Measure first-token latency and tokens per second separately.
  • Test rolling updates, zone failure, and capacity replenishment before promising an availability target.

A practical provider-selection workflow

  1. Write the workload specification. Record framework, version, model size, precision, sequence length, batch and concurrency targets, training duration, checkpoint interval, and inference latency or throughput goals.
  2. Build an operator inventory. Mark custom CUDA code, CPU-only operations, branching, data-dependent shapes, and FP64-heavy sections. Identify TPU equivalents or redesigns.
  3. Shortlist generations. Consider v5e for a documented combined training and serving path, v6e for transformer, text-to-image, or CNN workloads needing its published per-chip resources, and v5p or TPU7x for large-scale communication-heavy training.
  4. Choose topology. Decide single-host or multi-host, then calculate memory, replication, and collective-communication requirements.
  5. Select capacity mode. Use on-demand for flexibility, Flex-start for runs up to seven days that can wait, Spot for restartable jobs, and reservations or commitments for sustained assured capacity.
  6. Check quota and region. Request the exact version, size, zone, and purchase mode. Verify data, storage, and user-serving locations.
  7. Run a representative pilot. Measure compile time, steady-state utilization, step time or token rate, memory headroom, checkpoint duration, and total cost.
  8. Stress failure recovery. Interrupt a Spot-style run or simulate worker loss, restore from a checkpoint, and record lost work and recovery time.
  9. Compare effective economics. Include accelerator, host, storage, network, egress, idle, retry, and engineering costs. Compare cost per useful output.
  10. Document the exit plan. Keep checkpoints and artifacts in portable formats, record framework versions, and specify how to move to another TPU generation or provider if capacity changes.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

Choosing by generation number alone

A newer TPU may have better theoretical resources but still be a poor choice if your operators, region, or quota are unavailable. Fix this by compiling and running the actual model before committing.

Treating Spot as merely a cheaper on-demand tier

Spot can be shut down at any time. Fix the assumption with frequent durable checkpoints, idempotent startup, and a measured restart path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the host presentation

Confusing chip-hours and VM-hours can invalidate a budget. Record how many chips each host contains and how the console bills the selected resource.

Assuming training benchmarks predict serving latency

Serving adds batching, queueing, tokenization, model loading, and user-facing network time. Benchmark the complete serving path with production-shaped traffic.

Delaying quota requests

Quota is version-, size-, zone-, and mode-specific. Submit requests before the project schedule depends on a particular TPU slice.

Decision checklist

  • Is the exact TPU generation available in the required region?
  • Does the framework and version path support the model without unacceptable custom-operator work?
  • Do memory, inter-chip bandwidth, host count, and collective performance meet the model’s needs?
  • Is the target latency, throughput, or training step time measured on a representative pilot?
  • Can the workload tolerate the interruption policy of the chosen capacity mode?
  • Have chip-hour, host, storage, networking, egress, idle, retry, and engineering costs been included?
  • Is quota approved for the precise version, size, zone, and mode?
  • Are checkpointing, observability, and recovery tested?
  • Are provider claims—especially benchmark figures—validated on your own model and serving stack?

For a first deployment, start with the Google Cloud TPU generation whose software path and regional capacity you can verify, then choose the least expensive capacity mode that matches your interruption tolerance. Move to another provider only when it demonstrates equivalent generation, capacity, software, and support terms for the same workload.
