NCSOFT’s official material gives each of the eight classes a clear identity: Templar tanks, Cleric and Chanter support, Spiritmaster (later called Elementalist) is built for solo play, and the rest are damage dealers that differ in range and style. Balance details change with patches, so use the role to choose and in-game tooltips to confirm specifics.
What NCSOFT says each class is for
NCSOFT’s May 30, 2025 announcement introduced eight classes and gave each a one-line identity:
| Class | Official identity | Role signal |
|---|---|---|
| Gladiator | Powerful, wide-area skill attacks | Melee damage |
| Templar | Core tanking role | Tank |
| Assassin | Precision-based melee specialist | Melee damage |
| Marksman | Long-range scout class | Ranged damage |
| Sorcerer | High burst magic damage | Magic damage |
| Spiritmaster | Optimized for solo play | Solo-oriented caster |
| Cleric | Improved damage capabilities | Healing with more offense |
| Chanter | Versatile support with multiplayer utility | Group support |
These are high-level descriptions, not a full skill guide. The “role signal” column is my reading of them. A community guide goes further, describing Cleric as the primary healer and Chanter as a flexible support. Treat that as third-party interpretation rather than an official statement.
Names differ between versions
The 2025 announcement uses Marksman and Spiritmaster. NCSOFT’s March 25, 2026 update calls the same slots Ranger and Elementalist. Confirm which names your client uses before searching for guides, since older material may use the other set. This article uses the 2025 names in the table and gives the 2026 names where they matter.

Decide in four steps
1. Choose your responsibility
- Hold enemies and protect allies: Templar is the clearest official tank signal.
- Keep allies alive or improve the group: Cleric (healing with improved damage) or Chanter (versatile multiplayer support).
- Deal damage: Gladiator, Assassin, Marksman/Ranger, Sorcerer, or Spiritmaster/Elementalist.
Tanking and healing put visible responsibility on you, because the group notices when they falter. NCSOFT’s sources give no difficulty rankings, so judge complexity from the mechanics you actually enjoy, not from labels like “easy” or “hard”.
2. Choose how combat should feel
- Wide-area melee: Gladiator.
- Precise melee: Assassin.
- Ranged weapon attacks: Marksman/Ranger.
- Burst magic: Sorcerer.
- Summon- or spirit-oriented casting: Spiritmaster/Elementalist.
3. Decide how much you play alone
If you mostly play solo, Spiritmaster/Elementalist is the one NCSOFT explicitly optimizes for it. If you expect to play with others, Chanter is described as multiplayer-oriented and Templar as the core tank. These are design intentions, not a solo-strength ranking, so don’t read them as proof that one class is the fastest or safest to level.
Rank #2
4. Decide whether PvE or PvP matters more
Strength in one mode doesn’t necessarily carry to the other. The March 2026 update introduced separate PvP and PvE damage calculations, so a class that looks strong in a dungeon can behave differently in player combat. If you care about both, check current notes for each mode.
Quick recommendations by player type
- “I want to be the one the group relies on to hold the line”: Templar.
- “I like helping the group in flexible ways”: Chanter.
- “I want to heal but still contribute damage”: Cleric.
- “I mostly play alone”: Spiritmaster/Elementalist.
- “I want big hits from a distance”: Sorcerer for burst magic, Marksman/Ranger for weapon-based range.
- “I want to be in melee”: Gladiator for area attacks, Assassin for precision.
These match each class’s stated identity. They are not a damage ranking.

What about “best class for beginners”?
No official source names a beginner class, and community tier lists are opinion that can shift with patches. A sensible default is to pick the class whose combat you enjoy watching and playing, since that’s what keeps you leveling. If you’re unsure, the solo-oriented Spiritmaster/Elementalist lets you learn without depending on a group, while a role-based class like Templar or Chanter suits you better once you know you’ll play with others.
Party size is not settled
NCSOFT’s 2025 announcement described over 200 dungeons, from solo instances to group dungeons for four or eight players. A current community guide describes a five-player group structure. These may reflect different versions, regions, or content, so don’t plan a fixed party composition around one number. Check the activity you intend to run in the client.

What changed in March 2026
NCSOFT’s March 25, 2026 update reported a comprehensive class rebalance, new Stigma skills for all eight classes, a maximum of five Stigma slots, and the PvP/PvE damage split. The new skills were:
| Class (2026 name) | New Stigma skill |
|---|---|
| Gladiator | Fracturing Rush |
| Templar | Battlefield Banner |
| Assassin | Shadowstep |
| Ranger | Supporting Fire |
| Sorcerer | Hibernation |
| Elementalist | Command: Proxy |
| Cleric | Reincarnating Touch |
| Chanter | Barrier Spell |
No official tier list was found in NCSOFT’s material, and an independent guide cautions that class rankings are community assessments that change with patches. Because balance is volatile, rely on in-game tooltips and official notices for your region.

Context from NCSOFT
NCSOFT also states that AION 2’s world is over 36 times larger than the original game’s. That is the company’s own comparison, not an independent measurement, and it has little bearing on class choice. Head of AION2 development Seunguk Baek said in the May 30, 2025 announcement: “AION2 is our vision of a complete evolution of AION. Our focus has been on both honoring the original IP and pushing it forward.”
