Choose a budget laptop by checking the software you must run first, then comparing the complete configuration and ownership cost—not just the processor name or sale price. For everyday documents, browsing, email, and video calls, 16 GB of RAM and SSD storage are useful targets when affordable; demanding courses or specialist work can call for more. These are starting points, not universal requirements: schools and employers set their own compatibility needs.

1. Check required software and operating-system compatibility

Before comparing laptops, ask your school, department, or employer which applications and operating systems your work requires. Some courses and jobs depend on Windows-only or specialized software. Oregon State University warns that required tools may not work on Apple Silicon or Windows on ARM; Ramapo College likewise cautions that some programs are platform-specific and that Chromebooks may not support the applications students need.

A Chromebook can suit a browser-centered workflow, but confirm that every required application works on it before buying. For a specialized course or job, current requirements from the school or employer should outweigh general-purpose advice. See Oregon State’s laptop guidance and Ramapo’s student laptop recommendations.

2. Set a practical specification target for everyday use

Memory and storage

For documents, browsing, email, video meetings, and ordinary multitasking, aim for 16 GB of RAM and an SSD if your budget allows. Drexel University CCI recommends at least 16 GB of RAM and SSD storage in its budget-laptop advice. Oregon State lists 16 GB of RAM and a 500 GB SSD as minimums for its engineering students, while saying 16 GB and 500 GB are sufficient for most general student use, particularly when network or cloud storage is available. Those campus recommendations are useful reference points, not a universal minimum.

An SSD is generally preferable to a hard disk drive for speed, durability, and longevity, though SSDs can cost more. Check the exact capacity you are buying and whether storage or memory can be upgraded later; on some laptops, one or both are fixed. Look beyond the processor label

An “i5,” “i7,” “Ryzen 5,” or “Ryzen 7” label alone does not tell you how a particular laptop will perform. Processor generation and exact model, cooling, memory, and the rest of the configuration all matter. Drexel advises looking up the precise CPU model and checking reviews and benchmarks for cooling and battery concerns. Compare the complete laptop rather than assuming a familiar tier name guarantees a good fit.

3. Decide whether your workload needs more power

Pay more for extra memory, storage, or graphics only when your applications or projects need them. Virtual machines, engineering simulations, CAD, 3D modeling, gaming, animation, video work, and large datasets can be more demanding than everyday office and browser tasks.

4. Balance screen size, portability, and battery needs

Choose a screen you will actually carry

Oregon State describes 13- to 15-inch laptops as a portability-oriented range. Drexel characterizes 13-inch models as more portable and 15- to 16-inch models as more comfortable for viewing. A smaller screen can be easier to carry; a larger one gives more room for split windows and detailed work. Consider your commute, desk setup, and how much screen space your applications need.

Evaluate battery evidence carefully

Battery runtime depends on the model and how it is used, so do not treat a manufacturer’s maximum claim as guaranteed real-world performance. Look for independent reviews of the exact model. For context, USF’s engineering guide recommends at least six hours of battery life and ten or more hours for a full campus day. That is a school-specific recommendation, not a measurement of every laptop or a universal standard. On a refurbished device, ask about battery health as well as the model’s reviewed runtime.

5. Compare new and refurbished laptops

Refurbished business laptops

A retired business laptop can be a value option if its condition, configuration, and support meet your needs. Drexel identifies retired ThinkPads and Latitudes as possible choices, including listings on eBay or refurbished stock at Micro Center, and advises checking the exact CPU and reviews for cooling or battery issues. That guidance does not endorse a particular listing or seller.

Before buying used or refurbished, check the battery’s condition, physical damage, included ports, return rights, warranty, and whether memory or storage can be upgraded. Confirm the exact operating system, RAM, and SSD capacity in the listing rather than relying on the model family name.

New laptops and education offers

University resource pages point students toward education purchasing routes from manufacturers including Dell, Apple, Microsoft, HP, and Lenovo. Compare the final price and warranty with other sellers: Ramapo warns that education pricing may change and may not be the lowest available price. Do not assume a discount is worthwhile without comparing the complete offer.

6. Calculate the total cost and check support

Compare more than the laptop’s sticker price. Include any warranty or accidental-damage coverage you are considering, a protective sleeve or bag, external storage if needed, and likely repair or upgrade costs. Wharton recommends considering a warranty for repair or replacement after accidents or technical problems; Oregon State also suggests weighing extended or accidental-damage coverage and checking whether memory and storage can be upgraded. A warranty’s coverage and terms vary, so review them before deciding.

Plan how you will protect important files. Oregon State recommends keeping two or more copies, for example on an external drive and in university or cloud storage. A padded sleeve or case is optional, but can help protect a laptop carried between classes or work.

7. Use this checklist before you buy

  1. Confirm compatibility: Get the required applications and operating system from your school, department, or employer.
  2. Match the workload: Decide whether you need only everyday apps or also virtual machines, CAD, simulations, gaming, large datasets, or media production.
  3. Compare full configurations: Check the precise processor, RAM, SSD capacity, graphics, screen, ports, webcam, and microphone.
  4. Check daily practicality: Compare screen size, weight, independent battery reviews, and—if refurbished—battery health and physical condition.
  5. Calculate the final cost: Compare the purchase price, warranty, return terms, accessories, and likely upgrade needs.
  6. Confirm future flexibility: Find out whether RAM and storage can be replaced or expanded, rather than assuming they can.
  7. Set up file protection: Choose a backup approach that keeps at least two copies of important data.
