Choose a margin account only when you need borrowing, short selling, or another margin-only feature. Compare the broker’s complete borrowing schedule, security-by-security collateral rules, maintenance methodology, monitoring frequency, and liquidation authority—not just the advertised interest rate. If you do not need those features, a cash account avoids margin-loan interest and the risk that a margin debit triggers forced sales.

What a margin account is—and what you are actually choosing

A margin account lets a brokerage lend against eligible securities and cash in your account. Your securities serve as collateral, and the debit balance accrues interest. Margin increases the amount you can trade, but it also increases potential losses: a decline in your holdings reduces collateral while the loan remains outstanding.

The account agreement, not a marketing page, determines the practical experience. It specifies how rates are set, which instruments receive collateral value, how maintenance requirements are calculated, how often risk is measured, and what the firm may do when your equity falls below its requirement.

There is no universally “best” margin broker. The right choice depends on your debit balance, instruments, trading strategy, tolerance for changing requirements, and need for operational safeguards. A lower headline rate can be a poor bargain if your securities receive little collateral value or the firm can impose restrictive house requirements.

First decide whether you need margin at all

Choose cash when borrowing is not part of your plan

In a cash account, you pay the full purchase price of transactions and do not borrow from the broker. That removes margin-loan interest and the possibility that a margin debit leads to involuntary liquidation. A cash account is generally the simpler default if you are buying and holding securities with settled funds.

Investor.gov cautions that some brokerage applications make margin the default account type. Before submitting an application, verify that “cash” rather than “margin” is selected, and check the confirmation documents after approval.

Margin may be justified by a specific feature

Consider margin only when you can name the feature you need, such as:

  • Borrowing against an existing portfolio for a defined, affordable period.
  • Short selling, which requires the broker to borrow securities for delivery.
  • Trading strategies or settlement functionality that the broker makes available only in a margin account.

Do not treat unused buying power as a benefit by itself. A margin account can tempt you to carry a debit simply because the capacity exists. Decide in advance how much debt you would allow, how you would fund interest, and what assets you would sell voluntarily before the broker has to act.

Compare the complete borrowing cost, not one rate

Broker rates and interest practices differ. Ask for the rate that applies to your expected debit balance and read the schedule for every tier. The relevant figure may be a benchmark or base rate plus a spread, and the spread can change as the balance moves between tiers.

Cost question Why it matters What to record
What is the current rate for my exact debit? A promotional or “starting” rate may apply only to a narrow balance range. Rate, balance tier, effective date, and source document.
Is pricing tiered? The marginal rate can change when the debit crosses a threshold. Every tier, threshold, and whether the rate applies retroactively or only to the next dollars borrowed.
Is the rate a benchmark plus a spread? Your cost can change when the reference rate changes, even if the broker leaves its spread unchanged. Benchmark name, spread, reset process, and notice terms.
How does interest accrue? Daily accrual means a debit begins costing money immediately; posting may occur monthly or on another schedule. Accrual convention, posting date, minimum charge, and treatment of credits or reversals.
Can the broker change the rate without advance notice? Variable pricing can alter the cost of a position you planned to hold. Agreement language on rate changes and customer notice.
Are there separate charges? Short positions, hard-to-borrow securities, and forced liquidations may carry costs beyond the margin rate. Borrow fees, locate fees, liquidation fees, and any minimums.
Are discounts available? Relationship or negotiated discounts may depend on assets, activity, or approval and may not apply automatically. Eligibility conditions, expiration, and the rate after any discount ends.

As a dated example of why rates must be refreshed, Fidelity displayed a 10.825% base margin rate effective September 18, 2026, when checked for this guide. That is a historical snapshot, not a current quote for every customer or balance. Check the selected broker’s live rate table immediately before opening the account and again before carrying a large debit.

Estimate cost using the actual debit path, not the account’s maximum buying power. For example, if you expect a debit to move across tiers during the month, calculate each portion at its applicable rate and include the days outstanding. Compare the resulting annualized and monthly dollar cost with an unleveraged alternative.

Understand what “marginable” means for each security

Margin eligibility is neither universal nor permanent. A stock, exchange-traded fund, mutual fund, bond, option, or other instrument may receive collateral value at one firm and be restricted or ineligible at another. Even when an instrument is technically eligible, the broker may assign a reduced value.

Firms can apply stricter internal requirements than regulatory or exchange baselines. Fidelity’s disclosure, for example, states that its internal margin requirements may exceed FINRA and NYSE requirements. Interactive Brokers describes both rules-based and risk-based approaches. These examples illustrate why a regulatory minimum is not a promise of the buying power you will receive.

Reasons a broker may reduce or remove collateral value

  • High price volatility or a sudden change in volatility.
  • Low trading volume or limited liquidity.
  • A concentrated position that makes the account dependent on one issuer or sector.
  • Low share price, a short trading history, or a recent listing.
  • A pending merger, split, dividend, delisting, or other corporate action.
  • Special characteristics of options, bonds, funds, or other complex instruments.

Ask the broker for its current margin-eligibility list and search the exact ticker, CUSIP, fund share class, option series, or bond issue you intend to trade. Confirm the percentage or dollar value credited as collateral, not merely whether the instrument appears on a list. Recheck after a corporate action or material price move; eligibility and required collateral can change.

Questions for a concentrated portfolio

If one security represents a large share of your account, ask for concentration add-ons and the point at which they apply. A position can remain listed as marginable while receiving substantially less collateral value once it exceeds a concentration threshold. Request an example using your intended position size rather than a generic illustration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare maintenance requirements and calculation methods

Maintenance requirements determine how much equity you must keep after a position is opened. The broker’s house requirement can exceed regulatory or exchange baselines and can rise without waiting for a formal margin call. Read the agreement for special requirements on volatile, concentrated, low-priced, or hard-to-borrow securities.

Rules-based versus risk-based margin

Rules-based systems apply stated percentages or schedules to positions. Risk-based or portfolio-style systems evaluate offsets, scenarios, and correlations across positions. A portfolio approach may recognize hedges that a simple schedule does not, but it can also produce larger requirement changes when the modeled risk increases. Ask which methodology applies to your account and instruments, and whether you must meet a separate requirement for each position.

How often is risk measured?

Some firms monitor requirements intraday rather than only at the end of the session. Intraday monitoring matters during fast markets: a position can fall below the requirement and be sold before you have time to transfer funds. Ask whether calculations use real-time prices, delayed prices, or periodic checks, and which valuation is used for thinly traded assets.

Items to capture from the agreement

  • Initial and maintenance requirements for each asset class you will trade.
  • House add-ons for concentration, volatility, liquidity, and special situations.
  • Whether requirements can rise during market stress and how notice is delivered.
  • How cash, unsettled proceeds, dividends, and corporate-action distributions are treated.
  • Whether portfolio offsets are recognized and what approvals are required.

Liquidation rules are the decisive risk

A margin call is not a guaranteed grace period. The SEC warns that a brokerage firm may sell securities bought on margin without notifying the investor and potentially at a substantial loss. FINRA margin disclosures state that the investor is not entitled to choose which securities or other assets are liquidated to meet a margin call.

  • Whether it may sell any asset in the account, including positions that were not purchased on margin.
  • Whether the firm chooses the order of sales or permits you to nominate positions.

Do not assume that depositing cash will always stop a sale. The agreement controls the cure process, and a broker may act before a transfer arrives or before you can reach support. Keep a liquidity reserve outside the account if you borrow, and set your own exit levels well above the firm’s minimum so a market gap does not leave the decision entirely to the broker.

Cash account versus margin account

Feature Cash account Margin account
Funding purchases You pay the full purchase price with available cash and settled funds. The broker may lend against eligible assets, creating a debit balance.
Interest No margin-loan interest because there is no margin debit. Interest accrues according to the broker’s rate schedule and can change.
Loss exposure You can lose the amount invested; borrowing is not added to the position. Leverage magnifies losses, and you may owe more after collateral is sold.
Short selling and margin-only features Generally unavailable. May be available subject to approval, borrow availability, and requirements.
Forced liquidation from a margin debit Not applicable when no margin loan exists. The broker may sell collateral, potentially without notice or your choice of position.
Operational complexity Settlement and cash-availability rules still apply but there is no margin requirement calculation. You must monitor debit balance, equity, collateral values, house requirements, and interest.

If you cannot identify a margin-specific need, choose cash. If you can, select margin only after documenting the maximum debit, collateral sources, repayment plan, and acceptable liquidation outcome.

A step-by-step process for selecting a broker

  1. Define the use case. Write down whether you need a temporary loan, short selling, or a particular trading feature. Specify the instruments and the largest debit you expect.
  2. Collect current documents. Obtain the broker’s margin-rate table, margin agreement, disclosure statement, eligibility schedule, and maintenance-requirement page. Record the date and account type covered by each document.
  3. Calculate your real borrowing cost. Apply each rate tier to your expected balance and holding period. Include daily accrual, posting timing, discounts, and ancillary short-sale or liquidation charges.
  4. Check every intended security. Search each ticker or instrument in the broker’s eligibility tool. Note collateral value, concentration rules, special requirements, and restrictions on new purchases.
  5. Model adverse moves. Calculate equity after a sharp price decline, a higher house requirement, and a loss of collateral value. Decide how much cash you could deliver and how quickly.
  6. Read the liquidation clause aloud. Confirm notice rights, selection of assets, cure deadlines, intraday authority, and fees. Treat broad discretion as a real cost even if the quoted rate is low.
  7. Evaluate monitoring and alerts. Check for margin calculators, real-time equity displays, email or mobile alerts, and downloadable statements. Alerts supplement your controls; they do not restrict the firm’s contractual rights.
  8. Verify account setup. Confirm whether the application defaults to margin, review the approved account type, and check that the requested trading permissions match your plan.
  9. Recheck before borrowing. Rates, eligibility, and requirements can change. Refresh the documents on the day you draw funds and whenever you add a new security.

Warning signs that should change your decision

  • The broker cannot provide a dated rate table or explains pricing only as “competitive.”
  • The eligibility schedule is unavailable, searchable only after opening an account, or excludes the instruments you need.
  • House requirements and concentration add-ons are described vaguely.
  • The agreement permits no-notice liquidation and gives the firm unrestricted choice of assets, while your plan depends on keeping particular positions.
  • Requirements are monitored intraday but alerts are delayed, optional, or unavailable.
  • You would need to sell long-term holdings or borrow elsewhere to meet a sudden call.
  • The debit would remain affordable only if rates stay at today’s level.

These are not necessarily grounds to reject a firm, but they require a larger safety margin, a smaller debit, or a different account type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions to ask customer service before enabling margin

  1. What rate and tier apply to a debit of my expected size today, and how often can they change?
  2. When does interest begin accruing, when is it posted, and is there a minimum charge?
  3. Which exact securities receive collateral value, and what reductions apply for concentration or volatility?
  4. Are new purchases, recent listings, corporate actions, or low-priced securities treated differently?
  5. Which maintenance methodology applies to my account, and are requirements monitored intraday?
  6. Can the firm raise a house requirement without advance notice?
  7. Can you liquidate without contacting me, and may you choose any asset or sale order?
  8. What deposits count toward curing a deficiency, by what deadline, and what fees apply?
  9. How do I disable margin, and what happens to an existing debit when I request that change?

Request written answers or point-in-time copies of the governing documents. A verbal explanation that conflicts with the agreement should not guide your decision.

How to manage a margin account after opening

Check the debit balance, equity percentage, collateral value, and current maintenance requirement at each trading session. Keep a record of rate changes and interest postings so you can reconcile the statement. Review every new position for eligibility before trading rather than assuming the account’s existing buying power applies.

Maintain cash or highly liquid assets that are not already pledged. Establish a personal maximum debit below the broker’s threshold, and reduce borrowing when volatility, concentration, or house requirements rise. If you no longer need a margin feature, ask the broker to convert or disable margin and confirm in writing that no debit remains.

Bottom line

The best margin account is the one whose full terms you can afford under unfavorable conditions. Compare the effective rate for your balance, daily interest treatment, security-level collateral values, house maintenance rules, monitoring frequency, and liquidation discretion. A cash account is preferable when you do not need borrowing or margin-only trading; leverage should be enabled only for a defined purpose with a repayment plan and enough liquidity to avoid a forced sale.
