Choose a drive from Redump’s current confirmed compatibility list, matching the exact model and any listed hardware variant. LG WH16NS40 is one listed PC-drive option. But a compatible PC drive creates a PS3 ISO only: Redump says this method does not extract the disc key or create an IRD. If you need a disc key, Redump recommends a suitable PS3 running custom firmware instead.
Start with what you need to dump
The right hardware depends on the result you need. A PC Blu-ray drive is an option for creating a PS3 ISO. If your workflow also requires extracting the disc key, Redump recommends using a compatible PS3 with custom firmware; the PC-drive method does not provide the key or create an IRD.

Check the exact drive model and variant
Use Redump’s current compatible Blu-ray drive list as the starting point. The list confirms particular models, and in some cases only specific hardware variants. A matching brand name, product family, or external enclosure is not enough to establish compatibility.

Examples from the compatibility list
- LG WH16NS40: listed as a compatible drive for dumping PS3 discs.
- Archgon MD-8107-U3: listed only in the 2025 BU40N/MT1959 variant; the older Pioneer variant is excluded.
Redump says other MediaTek-based drives may work but are untested; it identifies only the drives on its list as confirmed. Check the live listing before purchase because product revisions and compatibility information can change.
Buy from a seller you can verify
Compatibility on paper does not prove that a particular unit is genuine. In a report dated October 1, 2026, Tom’s Hardware relayed an RPCS3 developer warning that counterfeit drives may put older, PS3-incompatible hardware inside high-end shells and packaging, with spoofed firmware. The report noted possible clues such as misspellings, misaligned logos, incorrect manufacturing dates, or covered PCB markings. It did not provide a market-wide prevalence figure.

- Prefer a reputable seller that offers buyer protection.
- Compare the exact model, revision, and physical markings with credible references rather than relying on the listing title or enclosure.
- Be cautious if markings or packaging look inconsistent; cosmetic checks are warning signs, not proof that a drive is genuine or compatible.
Validate each new disc dump
A listed drive is a compatibility choice, not a guarantee that every dump is correct. Redump’s MPF guide recommends dumping any new disc twice and checking that the two results have matching hashes. Follow the guide for your chosen software and compare the hashes of the repeated dumps before treating the output as verified.
This check validates repeatability for the disc you dumped; it does not establish a reliability ranking, failure rate, speed comparison, or expected drive lifespan. Redump’s list records compatibility rather than results from a controlled durability study.

A practical purchase checklist
- Decide whether you need a key. If an ISO is enough, a compatible PC drive may fit. If you need key extraction, follow Redump’s custom-firmware PS3 route and confirm your console model is suitable.
- Open Redump’s current Blu-ray compatibility list. Find the precise drive model and read any variant-specific qualification.
- Check the seller and the unit. Choose buyer protection, then inspect the model and physical identity for inconsistencies.
- Use the documented dumping method. Redump points Windows users to MPF and has CLI guides for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Dump new discs twice and compare hashes. Matching hashes are Redump’s recommended check for the repeated dumps.
