Check the exact firmware first: on your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Copy the complete system-software version, including every point-release component. Then compare that string with a chain-specific exploit table that identifies the required kernel exploit, PS5 hardware revision, and whether the entry is tested or only theoretical. Do not update until you have decided that preserving the installed firmware is less important than newer games, features, or Sony support.
There is no single “homebrew-compatible PS5 version.” A user-mode entry point, a kernel exploit, a homebrew enabler, and a Linux loader are different pieces. The same firmware can be useful for one goal and unsuitable for another, and a Slim or Pro may not share the tested behavior of an original Phat console.

Why the exact firmware string matters
PS5 exploit work is tied to narrow software builds. A table that says “13.xx” is not precise enough: 13.60, for example, is a specific point release whose behavior can differ from nearby versions. Record every number exactly as Sony displays it, and keep a photo or written copy before the console contacts update services.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Compatibility also depends on what you want to do. A browser or disc-based user-mode entry point may only provide the first step. Full homebrew normally needs a kernel component and then a payload or homebrew enabler. Linux booting has its own hardware and loader requirements. Treat each claim as a complete chain, not as proof that every application will run.

Community documentation is not a Sony-supported procedure. Exploit attempts can be unstable, can cause data loss, can affect online-service access, and can have warranty or repair implications. Sony warns that modified consoles or unofficial update files and methods might malfunction. Keep the decision reversible where possible: identify your firmware and hardware before changing anything.
Step 1: Read and record the installed version
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System, then System Software.
- Open Console Information. Sony says the installed system-software version appears on this page. If the status reads Up to date, it means the console is on the latest official release available to it, not that it is suitable for homebrew.
- Copy the complete version string exactly. Include all digits and decimal components; do not shorten it to a major version such as “13.”
- Record the hardware revision as well. Note whether the console is an original “Phat,” a Slim, or a Pro, and preserve the model information printed on the console or packaging.
Take this record before connecting to an update service or inserting a game disc that may request newer system software. Sony states that consoles can be notified of updates online and when a disc requires a later version. A notification does not install an update by itself, but accepting it can remove a firmware state that a community chain needs.
Step 2: Match the version to a complete exploit chain
Use a maintained compatibility table, such as the PS5 DevWiki entries, and read the notes for the exact chain. Check four fields together: firmware range, point releases, hardware models, and test status. A range is not a guarantee for every console in that range.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUser-mode entry point
This is the code path that gives a payload a starting point, often through a browser, a game, or Blu-ray Java functionality. It is an access mechanism, not automatically a jailbreak. If the table lists only an entry point, look for a separate kernel requirement before assuming that homebrew can be launched.
Kernel exploit
A kernel exploit provides the elevated privileges needed by many loaders and homebrew environments. The BD-JB-EX entry, for example, is currently listed for PS5 firmware 13.60 or earlier and explicitly requires a kernel exploit as well. A console that can reach BD-JB-EX but lacks a working kernel chain is not equivalent to a fully enabled homebrew system.
Homebrew enabler or payload
The enabler is the component that exposes a usable environment for applications. The open-source ps5-hen README documents support from firmware 1.00 through 4.51, with specific point releases listed, and notes homebrew and PS4 fpkg support. Its latest README changelog shown in the available documentation is dated April 15, 2026. That narrow range should not be generalized to later firmware.
Tested versus theoretical support
Prefer entries marked tested on your exact firmware and model. If an entry says a version is untested, patched, or theoretical, treat it as an experiment rather than a compatibility result. The PS5 DevWiki distinguishes exploit chains and reports tested ranges instead of one universal rule.
Compatibility evidence available in 2026
| Chain or project | Firmware evidence | What it can indicate | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slopkit | 7.00–13.60 tested, according to the PS5 DevWiki’s 2026 entry | A tested range for that chain | 14.00 and above are listed as untested and may be patched; model support must be checked in the entry. |
| BD-JB-EX | 13.60 or earlier in the current entry | A Blu-ray Java user-mode path that can be part of an exploit chain | A kernel exploit is also required; the entry is not a standalone homebrew guarantee. |
| ps5-hen | 1.00 through 4.51, with supported point releases documented | Homebrew-enabler functionality and PS4 fpkg support | Do not extend the README’s range to later firmware without a separate, tested chain. |
| ps5-linux | Selected original Phat versions: 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21, 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50 and 4.51 | Linux booting on the listed versions | The workflow is for selected Phat hardware, the exploit is a soft mod that must be rerun after reboot, and an M.2 SSD can be used but is optional for checking compatibility. |
| Relapse (reported by Tom’s Hardware, September 30, 2026) | 7.00–13.60 | A reported jailbreak-compatible range overlapping newer exploit coverage | Some game updates were already requiring 14.00, so choosing newer game compatibility can conflict with preserving this range. |
The table describes evidence, not a promise that every application works. Before proceeding, open the individual chain notes and verify the model, entry point, kernel component, payload version, and whether your exact point release was tested.
What “Can I homebrew a PS5 on firmware 13.60?” really means
Firmware 13.60 appears inside the PS5 DevWiki’s tested Slopkit range and the reported Relapse range. It is also within the BD-JB-EX limit, although BD-JB-EX still needs a kernel exploit. That makes 13.60 a potentially useful state for those specific chains, not a universal guarantee.
Ask these questions before acting:
- Does the chain explicitly test your PS5 model, rather than only another hardware revision?
- Is the kernel component available for 13.60, or is only a user-mode entry point documented?
- Does the payload support your intended outcome: general homebrew, PS4 fpkg, Linux, or something else?
- Are you prepared to remain on 13.60 if a game or system feature later requires 14.00 or newer?
If any answer is unknown, preserve the firmware and continue checking documentation rather than updating or experimenting blindly.
How hardware revision changes the decision
Firmware numbers alone do not identify a compatible console. Original Phat, Slim, and Pro models can differ in exploit behavior, memory layout, peripherals, or testing coverage. A table’s firmware range should therefore be read as “this chain was tested on the named hardware and versions,” not “all PS5 models on these versions work.”
| Hardware detail to verify | Why it matters | What to write down |
|---|---|---|
| Original “Phat” | The ps5-linux report covers selected Phat versions only. | Exact model identifier and firmware point release. |
| Slim | Do not assume a Phat result transfers; require an explicit Slim test. | Model family, chassis revision if documented, and tested chain. |
| Pro | Do not assume either Phat or Slim results transfer; require an explicit Pro test. | Model family and chain-specific support statement. |
If a compatibility page does not name your hardware, classify the result as unconfirmed. A successful report from another model can justify monitoring updates, but it is not evidence of safe execution on your console.
Should you update the PS5?
Only update after deciding that the benefits of the newer firmware outweigh preserving your current exploit opportunity. Sony’s official guidance strongly recommends installing the latest update as soon as possible after release for ordinary supported use. That advice serves a different goal from homebrew preservation: updates include security fixes and can close vulnerabilities.
Sony also warns that modified consoles or unofficial update files and methods may not operate properly and may affect warranty or repair service. Its support notice says not to download or install an update using data other than the official update file provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It further warns that installing data from a different source or method, or on a console altered in any way, can prevent normal operation or installation of official update data.
Reasons to stay on the current firmware
- Your exact version is in a tested range for the exploit chain and hardware you intend to use.
- You need homebrew, PS4 fpkg support, or Linux and accept staying offline or limiting normal updates.
- A newer release has no feature you need immediately.
Reasons to update
- You need a game or game update that requires a newer system version. Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026 that some updates were already requiring 14.00.
- You prioritize security fixes, official online services, stability, and Sony-supported repair over exploit preservation.
- Your current firmware is not covered by a tested chain for your hardware or desired outcome.
There is no reliable downgrade assumption. Treat an update as a one-way decision unless an authoritative, model-specific procedure says otherwise.

Official offline update procedure (when you have chosen to update)
Use Sony’s own update file and instructions. A FAT32 or exFAT USB flash drive is required for this offline method.
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and ensure it has enough free space for the official update file.
- At the root of the drive, create a folder named
PS5, then createUPDATEinside it. Folder names are case-sensitive in practice, so reproduce them exactly. - Place Sony’s official update file in the
PS5/UPDATEfolder and name itPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Turn off the PS5 completely. Then hold the power button until the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the USB drive, choose Update System Software, and select Update from USB Storage Device.
- Confirm the displayed version and follow the on-screen prompts. Do not remove power or the USB drive while the update is being applied.
This procedure is for an intentional official update, not for loading community firmware. Sony specifically cautions against unofficial files and methods.

Once you have recorded the version and model, prevent accidental changes while you evaluate the chain:
- Disable automatic system-software downloads or installation in the PS5’s update settings, while understanding that settings can change after a reset.
- Do not accept an update prompt simply to clear a notification.
- Check a game disc’s required version before inserting it; a disc can request a later system release.
- Keep the console disconnected from update services while you are making the preservation decision if that fits your normal setup.
- Back up important saves and captures using supported methods before any exploit attempt. A backup cannot guarantee recovery from every failure, but it reduces the cost of a corrupted storage state.
- Write down the exact firmware, model, storage configuration, and date of your check so you can identify a later change.
Choose the outcome before choosing a chain
Different goals lead to different compatibility requirements. Decide which statement best describes you:
Recommended Free Tools
“I want to run homebrew applications.”
Look for a homebrew enabler with a kernel component and an explicit payload range. The ps5-hen documentation is relevant only to its listed 1.00–4.51 point releases. A user-mode entry point without an enabler does not meet this goal.
“I want PS4 fpkg support.”
Confirm that the enabler explicitly lists PS4 fpkg support, as the ps5-hen README does. Verify the exact point release and model rather than inferring support from a generic jailbreak label.
“I want Linux.”
Use the ps5-linux hardware list, which names selected original Phat versions from 3.00 through 4.51. The reported workflow can use an M.2 SSD, but the SSD is an optional accessory for that path, not a prerequisite for reading firmware or evaluating compatibility. Because the exploit is a soft mod, it must be rerun after every reboot.
“I mainly want new games and online services.”
Preserve official update support by following Sony’s normal update process. A jailbreak-compatible range may prevent access to a game update that requires 14.00 or a later release, and community methods are not a substitute for Sony-supported online security and stability.

A practical decision workflow
- Identify. Read Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and record the complete version.
- Classify the hardware. Mark the console as Phat, Slim, or Pro and copy its model identifier.
- Define the goal. Choose homebrew, PS4 fpkg, Linux, or current games and online services.
- Find a chain. Compare the exact version and model with a maintained table such as the PS5 DevWiki, then read every requirement.
- Separate stages. Confirm the user-mode entry point, kernel exploit, and enabler or payload independently.
- Check status. Label the result tested, untested, theoretical, or potentially patched.
- Assess the trade-off. Decide whether staying on the firmware is acceptable if newer games require an update.
- Prepare safely. Back up data, avoid unofficial update files, and understand that community exploits can affect stability, data, warranty, repair, and online access.
- Act only after the record is complete. If one required field is missing, stop at information gathering instead of treating an adjacent firmware or model as equivalent.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Rounding the version
Calling 13.60 “13” hides the point release that a chain may require. Always copy the full string from Console Information.
Confusing a range with universal support
“7.00–13.60” describes the tested Slopkit range reported by the PS5 DevWiki, not every exploit, application, and hardware revision in that interval.
Stopping at the browser or BD-JB step
An entry point is only the beginning. Confirm the kernel component and the homebrew enabler before expecting applications to run.
Assuming a reboot leaves the exploit active
The ps5-linux report describes a soft mod that must be rerun after reboot. Check the same persistence behavior for any other chain you consider.

Once the system is updated, you may lose a tested exploit window. Save the exact version and decide first.
Treating community instructions as official support
Sony does not support community exploit procedures. Use only official Sony update files for official updates, and accept that modified-console warnings can affect operation, warranty, and repair service.
Compatibility checklist
- Complete firmware string copied from Console Information.
- Phat, Slim, or Pro model identified.
- Desired outcome written down.
- Exploit chain named, not just a generic “jailbreak.”
- User-mode entry point confirmed.
- Kernel exploit requirement confirmed.
- Homebrew enabler or Linux loader confirmed.
- Exact point release marked tested or untested.
- Hardware test status confirmed.
- Update-versus-preservation decision made before connecting to update services or inserting a newer game disc.
- Backups completed and community risks understood.
The safest conclusion is deliberately narrow: firmware compatibility is chain-specific, hardware-specific, and date-sensitive. A PS5 on 13.60 may fit the tested Slopkit and reported Relapse ranges, while a PS5 on 4.51 may fit the documented ps5-hen or selected Phat Linux paths; neither statement proves compatibility for every model or purpose. Record your exact version, verify every stage of the chain, and update only after choosing the trade-off you can live with.
