To see the system software (firmware) version installed on a PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The version is listed on that screen. Sony says, “You have the latest version installed if Up to date is shown under the system software version.” The same page also displays the console name, IP address and MAC address. Sony’s Console Information instructions are the authoritative reference for this check.
A consumer PS5 does not have a Sony-documented screen that inventories every individual system-software module or component. You can verify the aggregate system-software version and whether an update is offered, but you should not expect a hidden per-module list in Settings.
Find the installed PS5 system software version
Use the Console Information page when you need the version currently installed on the console, for example when checking compatibility, reporting a support issue or confirming that an update completed.

- From the PS5 home screen, select Settings (the gear icon).
- Open System.
- Select System Software.
- Choose Console Information.
- Read the value shown for the system software version.
This is an on-console reading of the installed software, not merely the version of an update file you downloaded. The page also identifies the console name, IP address and MAC address, which can help support staff distinguish one console from another.

How to tell whether the version is current
Look beneath the version on the Console Information screen. If Sony displays Up to date, Sony’s support guidance says the latest version is installed. If that status is absent or you want to perform a fresh check, use the update menu described below.
Check whether Sony offers a newer PS5 update
The update-check screen is separate from Console Information. It tells you whether a newer release is available and provides the installation command.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Review the status. When Sony has a newer release for your console, the screen shows Update Available.
- Select Update System Software and follow the on-screen instructions.
Sony documents this path in its PS5 system-software guide. The two screens answer different questions: Console Information reports what is installed now, while System Software Update and Settings reports whether an update is offered and starts the update.

- System software version: the aggregate version installed on the console.
- Up to date: Sony reports that the latest version is installed.
- Update Available: Sony is offering a newer release through the update screen.
A version number by itself does not provide a component-by-component inventory. It is the release identifier for the PS5 system software as a whole.

Can you see every installed PS5 system module?
Sony’s consumer-facing documentation describes the aggregate system-software version and the console-identification fields on Console Information. It does not document a Settings page that lists every individual module, package, library or firmware component installed on a retail PS5.
Consequently, there is no supported consumer procedure for opening a complete “installed modules” inventory. Do not treat the version number as a list of modules, and do not rely on unofficial menus or files that claim to expose internal component versions. If a support case requires component-level diagnostics, use the documented update and troubleshooting flows first, then contact official PlayStation Support with the console’s version and identification details.
What you can document for support
Record the exact system-software version from Console Information, the text of any status message in System Software Update and Settings, and—when requested—the console name, IP address and MAC address shown on the same information page. This gives support a reproducible description without claiming that a per-module list exists.

Update the PS5 normally over the internet
When Update Available appears, select Update System Software and let the console use Sony’s built-in update process. Keep the console on until the update has finished and it returns you to the normal interface. Afterward, go back to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and check the installed version and the Up to date status.

- DESIGNED FOR THE PS5 CONSOLE: Engineered to fit perfectly and easily into the PS5 console's SSD expansion slot for a quick and easy install.
- REVOLUTIONARY COOLING: Made from High-Quality CNC'd aluminum, the Sabrent Heatsink for the PS5 console was specifically designed to maximize cooling performance and simplify installation.
- UPGRADE YOUR CONSOLE! Rather than creating a heatsink that would only trap the heat in the metal cover, we designed a heatsink that replaces the native PS5 consoles cover. This allows for better cooling using the native fan as well as being a larger heatsink.
- INDUSTRIAL QUALITY: This SSD heatsink method also uses Sabrent's "Sandwich Design" which ensures even pressure throughout the SSD for efficient and consistent heat transfer unlike methods used by other brands.
- CONVENIENCE: Comes with an installation guide as well as screws and thermal tape for easy convenient installation.
The update screen is the right place to initiate an update; Console Information is the right place to verify the result. Checking both prevents a downloaded update from being mistaken for an installed one.
Use Sony’s USB update method when the online update fails
If the internet-based update cannot complete, Sony provides a USB procedure. This is an update, not a module-inspection tool, and it requires Sony’s official update file.
Prepare the USB drive and update file
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the root of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a subfolder namedUPDATE. - Download Sony’s PS5 update file from the official system-software page.
- Save the file in the
UPDATEfolder with the exact filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP.
The folder and filename must match Sony’s instructions. A different filename, a missing subfolder or a file stored outside PS5/UPDATE prevents the console from finding the update.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Install the update from Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 completely off.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after you hear the second beep; this starts Safe Mode.
- Connect the prepared USB drive to the console.
- In Safe Mode, choose Update System Software.
- Select Update from USB Storage Device.
- Choose OK and allow the update to run.
After the console restarts, verify the result at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony’s guide warns: “Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.” Use the official PS5 system-software guide for the current download and Safe Mode instructions.

Update versus reinstall in Safe Mode
Safe Mode includes a reinstallation operation in addition to updating. Reinstallation is not a routine way to check a version and should not be selected casually: Sony distinguishes it from an update, and reinstallation deletes console data. If your goal is only to identify the installed version, use Console Information. If your goal is to apply a failed update, use Update from USB Storage Device with the official file.

The version is visible, but you are unsure whether it is current
Return to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. An Update Available message means Sony is offering a newer release. If Console Information shows Up to date, Sony reports that the latest version is installed.
The online update does not complete
Use Sony’s USB fallback rather than downloading an update package from an unofficial site. Confirm the drive uses FAT32 or exFAT, the folders are exactly PS5/UPDATE, and the file is named PS5UPDATE.PUP. Start Safe Mode by holding the power button through the second beep, then choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.

You need component-level information for a repair or support case
There is no Sony-documented consumer module-inventory screen to consult. Provide the aggregate version, update status and Console Information fields instead. Support can then direct you through the appropriate documented troubleshooting process.
Do not confuse system-version checking with storage expansion
Some readers arrive at the software-version screen because they are preparing to install an additional internal drive. A storage upgrade is separate from checking firmware. Sony documents a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD specification, but an SSD is not required to view the system-software version or check for updates.
For readers who are specifically expanding storage, Sony’s published requirements are:
| Requirement | Sony’s specification |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Supported lengths | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 |
| Maximum width | Up to 25 mm |
| Total thickness, including cooling structure | Up to 11.25 mm |
| Recommended sequential read speed | 5,500 MB/s or faster |
| Cooling | Effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet |
Sony says an installed M.2 SSD can hold, download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games and media apps. These specifications apply to storage expansion, not to the Console Information or update checks. See Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guidance before purchasing or fitting a drive.
A reliable check sequence
For a quick, support-friendly record, follow this order:
- Read the installed version at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- Note whether the page says Up to date.
- Open System Software Update and Settings and check for Update Available.
- If an update is offered, use Update System Software.
- If the online process fails, prepare the official
PS5UPDATE.PUPon a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and use Safe Mode’s Update from USB Storage Device. - Check Console Information again after the console restarts.
This sequence answers the questions Sony’s consumer interface supports: which aggregate system-software version is installed, whether Sony considers it current and whether a newer update is available. It does not produce a per-module inventory because Sony does not document one for retail PS5 consoles. Menu labels and update behavior can change after a major PS5 system-software redesign, so consult Sony’s current support pages if your console presents different wording.
