To measure a mutual fund’s IT-stock exposure, use its latest dated portfolio disclosure: read the reported Information Technology sector percentage, verify it by adding the weights of individual IT companies, then check for indirect exposure through exchange-traded funds, other fund units, overseas funds or derivatives. Record the disclosure date and denominator (equity or total net asset value) because the result is a dated snapshot, not a forecast.

You can repeat the same process for every scheme you own, then compare sector weight, concentration in the largest issuers, number of IT holdings, direct versus indirect exposure, investment strategy and disclosure date.

What an IT-exposure figure actually tells you

A mutual fund’s IT exposure is the portion of its portfolio allocated to information-technology companies or instruments that represent them. The percentage may be reported as a share of the scheme’s equity portfolio or as a share of total scheme net asset value (NAV). Those denominators are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, a fund could have a high IT percentage within its equity holdings but a lower percentage of total NAV if it also holds bonds, cash or other assets. Always preserve the exact denominator shown in the disclosure.

The number is an allocation snapshot as of the portfolio date. Holdings can change after that date, and two providers may classify a borderline company differently. Exposure indicates sensitivity to IT-sector movements; it does not predict the fund’s return.

Step 1: Make a complete list of your schemes

Start with every mutual-fund scheme and plan you own, including direct and regular plans, growth and income options, and holdings spread across different registrars or platforms. Missing one scheme will understate your household’s overall IT exposure.

Use your Consolidated Account Statement

Your latest Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) lists mutual-fund holdings across folios and fund houses. The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) says CAMS and KFintech provide electronic CAS facilities. Use the statement to capture each scheme name, plan and option exactly as shown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use MFCentral for a portfolio view

MFCentral can show a consolidated portfolio and generate summary or detailed portfolio/CAS reports. AMFI says a selected period in MFCentral is limited to 365 days. Choose a report that includes all relevant folios, not only recent transactions, and save the report date with your worksheet.

  • Record the fund house and complete scheme name.
  • Record the plan and option, because two plans can have different portfolios or NAVs.
  • Note whether you hold units directly or through an account that may omit another folio.
  • Keep the CAS or MFCentral report as your inventory record; it is not the source for sector weights.

Step 2: Download the latest dated portfolio disclosure

Obtain the fund house’s monthly factsheet from its website or use AMFI’s monthly-factsheet directory. AMFI describes a factsheet as a monthly document focused on scheme performance and portfolio information. The disclosure date matters more than the date you happen to download the file.

Prefer the newest file that covers your scheme

Check the month and portfolio “as of” date printed inside the PDF or spreadsheet. A file downloaded today may describe holdings from an earlier month. If a fund house supplies a separate portfolio disclosure, use it when it is newer or more detailed, while retaining the factsheet for its sector summary.

Use the official scheme-disclosure record when needed

AMFI’s disclosure portal provides scheme-wise investment disclosures under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) circular dated 25 August 2022. The disclosure framework calls for the name and exposure of leading issuers or stocks, groups and sectors as percentages of scheme NAV for applicable schemes. Use the portal to locate the scheme’s dated holdings file when the factsheet does not provide enough detail.

Save the source name, file title, portfolio date and sector label. If you later compare funds, these details let you distinguish a genuine allocation change from a difference in reporting period or classification.

Step 3: Find the sector allocation

Open the factsheet or portfolio file and search for “Information Technology,” “IT” or the fund’s own sector label. AMFI identifies “Allocation by sector for equities” as a standard factsheet item and explains that the portfolio shows how invested money has been deployed across securities.

Read the heading and denominator together

Before copying a percentage, inspect the table heading and footnotes:

  • Sector label: Copy the exact wording used by the fund. “Information Technology” and “IT” may describe the same broad area, but do not silently rename a fund’s classification.
  • Portfolio date: Record the “as of” date printed beside the table.
  • Denominator: Note whether the percentage is of equity assets or total NAV.
  • Scope: Check whether the table covers only domestic equities or also includes overseas securities, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), fund units or derivatives.

Use the reported sector percentage as the primary figure. It is the fund’s own classification and may include securities that are not obvious from company names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Verify the figure with individual holdings

Next, move to the security-level table in the same dated disclosure. Identify companies that the fund classifies as IT companies and add their portfolio weights.

Add direct IT-company weights

  1. List each IT issuer shown in the holdings table, such as TCS, Infosys or HCLTech when they appear in the fund’s disclosure.
  2. Copy each issuer’s portfolio weight exactly, including the number of decimal places supplied.
  3. Add the weights of all direct IT-company holdings that belong to the same denominator as the sector table.
  4. Compare your sum with the reported IT-sector percentage.

Do not add a sector subtotal to its component stocks. If the table reports an “Information Technology” subtotal and also lists the companies beneath it, use either the subtotal or the component sum as a check, never both in the fund total.

Interpret small differences correctly

A difference can result from rounding, classification choices or other IT exposure that is not represented by the direct-company list. Investigate the table notes before treating it as an error.

Illustration: if a factsheet reports 18% in Information Technology and the listed direct IT-company weights add to 17.6%, retain 18% as the reported sector figure and 17.6% as your holding-level check. The 0.4-percentage-point difference is a prompt to inspect rounding, classification and other instruments; it is not a reason to replace the published sector figure.

Step 5: Check for indirect IT exposure

Direct shares are only part of a fund’s possible technology exposure. Search the holdings for instruments whose underlying assets may include IT companies:

  • ETFs: An ETF unit can represent a basket of technology shares. Count the ETF holding as indirect exposure unless the disclosure supplies a look-through percentage.
  • Other mutual-fund or fund units: A fund-of-funds or another pooled vehicle may own IT companies that are not named in the top-level security table.
  • Overseas funds and securities: Foreign technology holdings may be grouped separately from domestic “Information Technology” stocks.
  • Derivatives: Futures or options can create economic exposure without appearing as ordinary equity holdings. Follow the disclosure’s treatment and notes.

Keep direct IT-company holdings and indirect instruments in separate worksheet columns. Combine them only when the disclosure provides a reliable look-through weight. Otherwise, report the direct figure and identify the indirect instrument without inventing an exposure percentage.

Build one worksheet for every scheme

A consistent worksheet prevents denominator and date errors. Use one row per scheme and preserve the source wording.

Field What to record Why it matters
Scheme and plan Complete name, plan and option from your CAS or MFCentral report Separates holdings that look similar but are different plans or options
IT-sector weight Published Information Technology or IT percentage Primary fund-reported exposure
Denominator Equity portfolio or total NAV Makes percentages comparable only when the basis matches
Largest IT issuer Company with the highest IT holding weight Shows single-stock concentration
Number of IT holdings Count of direct IT companies listed Distinguishes a broad basket from a concentrated one
Indirect instruments ETFs, fund units, overseas funds or derivatives Flags exposure that a direct-stock sum may miss
Equity weight Total equity allocation shown by the fund Provides context for an IT percentage based on equity
Disclosure date Portfolio “as of” date and file month Shows how current the snapshot is
Source Fund-house factsheet or AMFI disclosure file name Allows the figure to be rechecked later

Keep the original file alongside the worksheet. If you update a row, do not overwrite the prior date; add a new dated row so you can see how the allocation changed.

Compare IT exposure across your funds

Comparison is useful only after you normalize the information. A percentage of equity and a percentage of total NAV answer different questions, so label them rather than placing them in one undifferentiated ranking.

Use six comparison axes

Axis Question to answer
IT-sector percentage What share of equity or NAV does each disclosure classify as Information Technology?
Largest-issuer concentration How much of the scheme is represented by its biggest IT company?
Number of IT holdings Is the sector allocation spread across many issuers or a few?
Direct versus indirect exposure Does the fund own IT companies directly, or through ETFs, fund units, overseas funds or derivatives?
Strategy Is the scheme actively selected or designed to follow an index?
Disclosure date Are the figures from comparable months?

A fund with a larger IT allocation will generally be more sensitive to developments affecting the IT sector, but the disclosure alone cannot establish which fund will perform better.

Identify overlapping IT stocks

To see whether several funds give you the same underlying exposure, list each fund’s direct IT issuers and their weights. Mark repeated companies such as TCS, Infosys or HCLTech, then review the issuer weights fund by fund.

For a household-level view, do not simply add every fund’s published IT percentage. That would count the same underlying company multiple times. Keep two results:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Each-fund exposure: the IT percentage reported by every scheme.
  • Look-through overlap: the repeated underlying issuers across your funds, calculated only where the disclosures provide enough information to avoid double-counting.

When a fund owns another fund or ETF and no look-through weight is supplied, identify the overlap qualitatively rather than assigning a guessed number.

Assess whether the concentration is meaningful

There is no universal IT-percentage threshold that makes a diversified fund “too concentrated.” Interpret the number alongside the fund’s total equity allocation, issuer concentration, number of holdings, indirect instruments and your other schemes.

Ask these questions

  • Is the IT percentage based on total NAV or only the equity sleeve?
  • Does one issuer account for a large part of the IT allocation?
  • Do several funds own the same leading IT companies?
  • Is an ETF or fund unit adding exposure that the direct-stock subtotal does not show?
  • Are your comparison files from the same or similar disclosure dates?
  • Does the fund’s active or index strategy explain why its sector weight differs from another scheme?

This is an exposure assessment, not a return forecast. A sector weight can rise or fall because of portfolio transactions, market-price changes, company reclassification or changes in the denominator.

Why your numbers may not match

The file dates differ

One fund may report at month-end while another file covers an earlier date. Compare the “as of” dates before concluding that one manager has materially changed allocation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The denominator differs

An equity-allocation percentage and a total-NAV percentage cannot be compared directly. Re-label both rows or calculate a comparable basis only when the disclosure supplies the necessary totals.

The sector classification differs

Fund houses may classify borderline businesses differently. Preserve each provider’s sector label and explain the classification difference rather than forcing every company into one universal category.

Rounding obscures the sum

Individual weights rounded to one or two decimal places may not add exactly to a reported subtotal. Treat a small gap as a reconciliation issue and inspect notes before escalating it.

Indirect holdings are excluded from your sum

An ETF, fund unit, overseas vehicle or derivative may contribute to economic exposure without appearing in your direct-company addition. Keep those instruments in a separate column and look for a supplied look-through percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable monthly process

  1. Update your scheme inventory from the latest CAS or MFCentral portfolio report.
  2. Download the newest available factsheet or scheme-wise disclosure for each scheme.
  3. Write down the portfolio “as of” date, file name and denominator before copying percentages.
  4. Capture the reported IT-sector allocation.
  5. List direct IT issuers and add their weights without adding a subtotal twice.
  6. Review the security table for ETFs, fund units, overseas funds and derivatives.
  7. Record the largest IT issuer, number of IT holdings and total equity weight.
  8. Compare dates and denominators across schemes.
  9. Mark repeated issuers across funds to identify overlap.
  10. Archive the files and add a new dated worksheet row for the next update.

Because disclosures are snapshots, a monthly check is most useful when you are monitoring a material allocation change or reviewing several funds together. For a one-time review, preserve the file date and avoid describing the result as current beyond that date.

What the official disclosures establish

AMFI’s investor guidance describes the factsheet as a monthly overview emphasizing scheme performance and portfolio disclosure. Its guidance identifies sector allocation for equities and explains that the portfolio shows how invested money has been deployed across securities.

SEBI’s mutual-fund disclosure framework requires applicable schemes to report leading issuers or stocks, groups and sectors as percentages of scheme NAV. AMFI’s scheme-disclosure portal organizes these investment disclosures under the SEBI circular dated 25 August 2022.

These sources establish where to find the allocation and how it is presented. They do not turn a sector percentage into a prediction of future performance.
