Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health and assess Maximum Capacity alongside Peak Performance Capability, service messages, and how the phone behaves in everyday use. A percentage by itself is not a universal instruction to replace the battery—or the iPhone.
Where to find iPhone Battery Health
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery Health. On iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14, Apple’s model-specific instructions use Battery Health & Charging instead. Labels can vary by model and iOS version. See Apple’s general battery guidance and instructions for iPhone 11 and later.
On iPhone 15 and later running iOS 17.4 or later, Apple says this screen can include Battery Health, Maximum Capacity, a replacement recommendation, cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date.
What the battery readings mean
Maximum Capacity
Maximum Capacity estimates the battery’s present capacity relative to when it was new. Lower capacity generally means less time between charges. It is an estimate, and actual capacity varies with how the phone is used and charged.
Peak Performance Capability and messages
Read the performance section as well as the percentage. Apple may report normal peak performance, performance management after an unexpected shutdown, or a degraded-battery message. Apple’s normal-status wording is: “Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance.”

If you see “Your battery’s health is significantly degraded,” Apple says the message alone does not indicate a safety issue. A battery service may restore capacity and performance. If the phone shows that it cannot verify a genuine battery, Apple warns that its battery-health information may not be accurate; arrange an inspection instead of relying on the displayed percentage. When battery wear is a reason to seek service
Apple’s cycle figures are design targets under ideal conditions, not guaranteed lifespans or mandatory replacement thresholds:

Apple notes that actual capacity depends on regular use and charging. Treat these targets as context, not a rule that every battery must be replaced at 80%.
Seek a local battery-service estimate if iOS recommends service, the battery is marked significantly degraded, or short runtime and unexpected shutdowns materially interfere with using the phone. If the phone is an iPhone 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max, iOS 14.5 and later may recalibrate battery-health reporting to correct inaccurate estimates. Apple says recalibration can take a few weeks of regular charge cycles. Wait for the result, or follow Apple’s service guidance if recalibration fails; details are in Apple’s recalibration guidance.

Battery service or a different iPhone?
Compare the local battery repair price and any applicable coverage with the phone’s age and overall condition. Also consider how much battery runtime or performance affects you and how long you plan to keep the device. These are personal decision factors; Apple does not set a universal repair-versus-replacement break-even price.
Service options and costs depend on location. For example, Apple’s UK battery-service page says AppleCare battery replacement is at no extra charge when capacity drops below 80%. That UK-specific term should not be assumed to apply worldwide: check the terms of your local plan and the local service estimate before comparing repair with a new phone.
