To measure an index fund’s software and semiconductor exposure, identify the exact ticker and share class, download the sponsor’s latest holdings file, read the prospectus and shareholder report, then add the relevant industry weights using one consistent classification and denominator. Record the holdings “as of” date beside every percentage; a number without a date and classification basis can be misleading.
What “software and semiconductor exposure” actually measures
An index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to track a market index. Your exposure is the portion of the fund’s assets economically tied to software companies, semiconductor manufacturers, and semiconductor-equipment businesses—not simply the number of technology names in the portfolio.
A fund may report a broad information-technology allocation, separate industry groups, or only individual security weights. Software can be divided into application software and systems software. Semiconductor exposure can include semiconductor products as well as the equipment makers that supply chip manufacturers. The classification used by the fund sponsor or index provider determines which companies enter your total.

Your calculation should therefore identify the fund, index, date, categories, and denominator used.

Start with the exact fund
Record the ticker, legal name and share class
Write down the ticker, full fund name, share class, and whether the vehicle is an ETF or mutual fund. A single sponsor can offer several share classes with different expenses, minimums, currencies, or distribution policies. Holdings are often similar, but the legal vehicle and reporting documents are not interchangeable.
- Ticker: the symbol used to locate the correct portfolio page.
- Fund name: confirms that you did not select a similarly named strategy.
- Share class: important for mutual funds with investor, institutional, retirement, or advisory classes.
- Vehicle: ETF and mutual-fund disclosure schedules can differ.
- Index: the benchmark named in the investment objective.
If you are checking a workplace plan, also verify whether the option is a collective trust or a separate account rather than a publicly registered mutual fund. Its disclosure format may not match a retail fund’s website.
Use the primary documents first
Fund sponsor holdings page
Open the sponsor’s page for the exact fund and look for “Holdings,” “Portfolio,” “Holdings & Reports,” or a downloadable portfolio file. ETFs commonly provide a daily full-holdings file, although publication timing and file format vary. Save the file instead of relying on a web page that may refresh during the day.
Prospectus
The prospectus states the investment objective, names the tracked index, describes the strategy, and explains whether the fund intends to replicate the index, use representative sampling, or employ derivatives. It also identifies principal risks and any limits on investment flexibility.
Shareholder report
The latest shareholder report supplies a dated portfolio schedule and financial context. Portfolio tables may be organized by industry sector and may express percentages of net asset value, total investments, or total exposure. Read the table heading and footnotes before copying a percentage.
SEC EDGAR
For a US-registered fund, the sponsor’s documents and filings are available through the SEC’s EDGAR system. Use EDGAR when a website omits an older report, when you need the filing date, or when you want to verify a portfolio schedule against the sponsor’s copy. The prospectus and most recent shareholder report are the starting documents recommended for investors.

A seven-step exposure check
- Identify the fund. Record ticker, legal name, share class, vehicle, index, and currency.
- Download the newest holdings file. Note the file’s portfolio “as of” date and the date you downloaded it. Keep the original file with your notes.
- Read the objective and methodology. Determine whether the portfolio fully replicates the index, uses representative sampling, or uses futures, swaps, or other derivatives.
- Locate sector information. Copy any software, semiconductor, semiconductor-equipment, or broader information-technology percentages exactly as labelled, including the table’s denominator.
- Classify individual holdings when necessary. Use the sponsor’s or index provider’s industry labels. Separate application software, systems software, semiconductor products, and semiconductor equipment rather than forcing an uncertain company into a category.
- Add the weights. Sum the relevant security percentages, preserve a separate line for ambiguous classifications, and keep cash, futures, swaps, and other non-equity positions visible.
- Document the result. State the total, classification system, denominator, report period, holdings date, and download date. This makes the calculation reproducible.
Choose the correct denominator
Percentages that look similar may describe different bases. A sector table can use net asset value (NAV), total investments, or total exposure. A holdings file may use portfolio weight, market value, or another sponsor-defined field. Do not combine numbers from different bases.

If the sponsor provides both a sector total and security weights, use the sector total for the headline figure and the security sum as a cross-check. A mismatch is a reason to inspect footnotes, not to average the numbers.
Classify software and semiconductor holdings consistently
Software
Include holdings labelled application software or systems software when those are the categories used by the sponsor or index provider. A diversified technology company may be classified by its primary business rather than by every product it sells. Do not count a company merely because its products contain software.
Semiconductors
Separate semiconductor products from semiconductor equipment when the report does so. Chip designers, integrated-device manufacturers, foundries, memory producers, and equipment suppliers can have different industry labels and business risks. A broad information-technology sector total may include all of them, while a narrower “semiconductor” line may omit equipment makers.
Ambiguous businesses
Some companies span cloud services, hardware, consulting, networking, software, or chip design. Record the published classification first. If you choose a different interpretation, show it as a separate sensitivity calculation rather than silently changing the sponsor’s taxonomy.

Calculate the totals
When a combined line is absent, add the published weights that meet your stated definitions:

software exposure = application-software weight + systems-software weight
semiconductor exposure = semiconductor-products weight + semiconductor-equipment weight
combined exposure = software exposure + semiconductor exposure
Use the exact precision supplied in the file. If a report rounds each holding to two decimal places, your subtotal is also rounded and may differ slightly from the sponsor’s unrounded total.
For an illustration only, if a dated table lists application software at 11.40%, systems software at 4.60%, semiconductor products at 7.25%, and semiconductor equipment at 2.15%, the software subtotal is 16.00%, the semiconductor subtotal is 9.40%, and the combined total is 25.40% on that table’s stated basis. These figures demonstrate the arithmetic, not a current portfolio statistic.
Do not add a broad information-technology percentage to the software and semiconductor subtotals; that would double-count the same assets. Instead, present broad technology as a separate context measure.

Understand replication, sampling and derivatives
Full replication
A fully replicating fund attempts to hold every index constituent in its stated proportions, subject to trading costs, corporate actions, cash management, and operational limits. Its holdings list should broadly resemble the index, but the portfolio can still differ between rebalances.
Representative sampling
A sampled fund holds a subset designed to reproduce the index’s risk and return characteristics. It may omit smaller constituents or hold them at different weights. Therefore, listing every company in the index will not tell you the fund’s actual software or semiconductor exposure; use the fund’s own holdings and sector disclosures.
Derivatives
Futures, swaps, and other derivatives can create economic exposure without appearing as ordinary equity positions. A holdings file may show a derivative contract, a collateral position, or both. Read the prospectus and report footnotes to determine whether the sponsor reports market value, notional value, or total exposure. Never treat a derivative notional amount as a stock weight unless the document explicitly defines it that way.
Why your percentage can change
- Market prices: security weights move every trading day even when the fund makes no trade.
- Index rebalancing: additions, deletions, and updated float adjustments change the target portfolio.
- Creations and redemptions: ETF primary-market activity can alter cash and position quantities.
- Sampling: a sampled portfolio may not hold every index constituent.
- Derivatives: economic exposure can differ from the visible list of common stocks.
- Taxonomies: the sponsor, index provider, and a data website may assign different industries.
- Rounding: displayed weights can be rounded independently before you add them.
These effects explain why your total may not match an index factsheet or a third-party portfolio site. First check date, denominator, classification, and derivative treatment before concluding that either figure is wrong.
Compare two or more funds without mixing apples and oranges
Use the same holdings date, industry taxonomy, denominator, and treatment of semiconductor equipment for every fund. If one fund reports daily NAV weights and another reports quarterly total-investment weights, label the comparison as approximate or obtain comparable files.

ETF and mutual-fund reporting differences
ETFs often publish a daily full-holdings file, which is useful for a current snapshot but can still be delayed or subject to file-specific cutoffs. Mutual funds commonly provide detailed shareholder reports and regulatory filings on a periodic schedule. A periodic report is authoritative for its stated date, not a guarantee of today’s allocation.

When a daily file and a shareholder report disagree, do not merge them. Present each result with its own date and basis, then explain that prices and portfolio activity may account for the change.
Common mistakes and how to correct them

Keep an auditable worksheet
A simple spreadsheet makes the result easy to update. Create columns for security name, ticker, sponsor classification, market value or portfolio weight, source document, holdings date, and notes. Add separate subtotal rows for application software, systems software, semiconductor products, semiconductor equipment, other technology, cash, and derivatives.
At the top of the sheet, record the fund identity, index, denominator, taxonomy, report period, file name, and download date. Preserve the original file and your calculation formula. When you refresh the analysis, add a new dated tab instead of overwriting the prior result; this shows whether a change came from market prices, trading, or a classification update.
How often to recheck
Use a daily file when you need a current ETF snapshot, but recognize that it is still a point-in-time estimate. For a long-term allocation review, update after an index rebalance, a material fund methodology change, or each new shareholder report. If your investment decision depends on a narrow threshold, verify the date and denominator immediately before acting.
The final line of your worksheet should read like this: “Software: __%; semiconductors including/excluding equipment: __%; combined: __%; based on [denominator], holdings as of [date], downloaded [date], using [classification source].” That statement gives the percentage the context needed to interpret it.
