To see which Mac apps can access sensitive data or device features, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security and review the permission categories. Select a category to see which apps have access, then switch off permissions an app does not need. The available categories depend on your macOS version and which permissions apps have requested.
Review app permissions in Privacy & Security
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security in the sidebar. Scroll down if needed.
- Choose a category, such as Photos, Contacts, or Microphone, to inspect the apps listed there.
- Switch off access for apps that do not need it for the way you use them. If a feature later stops working, return to that category and turn access back on.
Apple describes the permission process this way: “Apps ask for permission the first time they want to use something on your Mac, explaining how they use the information.” That prompt is a useful starting point, but it does not tell you everything about an app’s data practices.
Which permission categories should you check?
Review the categories that match the data or capability you want to protect. Apple lists these controls in Privacy & Security, though the exact list varies by macOS version and by which permissions apps have requested.
| Category | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Files & Folders | Access to specific locations, including Desktop, Downloads, and Documents. |
| Photos, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders | Access to the corresponding personal information. |
| Camera and Microphone | Use of the Mac’s camera and microphone. |
| Full Disk Access | Broad access that can include files from other apps, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings. |
| Accessibility, Automation, Input Monitoring | Permissions involving interaction with or control of the Mac and its input. |
| Screen & System Audio Recording | Access to record the screen and system audio. |
Understand Files & Folders versus Full Disk Access
Files & Folders can be limited to particular locations
Apple’s Mac Help describes per-app controls for locations such as Desktop, Downloads, and Documents. Its security documentation also discusses protected access to iCloud Drive and network volumes. This setting lets you review access to particular locations rather than treating every file on the Mac as one permission.

Full Disk Access is much broader
Apple says Full Disk Access can permit access to all files on the computer, including data from other apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, as well as Time Machine backups and certain administrative settings for all users. Inspect this category carefully, but a listing alone does not establish that an app is malicious or that it does not have a legitimate reason for access.
What these settings do—and do not—tell you
The permission lists show access granted or denied in the categories macOS covers. They do not provide a complete account of an app’s network traffic, retention practices, or developer data collection. A permission grant also does not prove that data leaves your Mac: Apple notes that data may be accessed and remain on-device. For the reason an app requests access and how its developer handles information, consult the app’s privacy policy or ask the developer. Apple likewise advises reviewing third-party privacy practices when granting file access.

Some work- or school-managed Macs have privacy settings governed by an administrator. Apple’s deployment documentation describes management policies for permissions including camera, microphone, folder access, screen recording, and all-files access. If a switch is unavailable or settings revert to a managed state, contact your organization’s IT administrator.
