Check your upload speed on the connection and device you will actually stream from, then compare it with YouTube’s recommended live bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Leave about 20% of upload capacity unused, and confirm the result with a realistic test stream. A download-speed result or your internet plan’s advertised speed cannot establish that a live stream will stay stable.
What upload speed do you need for YouTube Live?
There is no single upload-speed requirement for every YouTube stream. The video bitrate YouTube recommends depends on the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and encoding codec. Find that bitrate in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance, then allow more capacity than the stream itself needs.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% room. As a practical calculation derived from that guidance, divide the stream’s target bitrate by 0.8 to estimate the minimum upload capacity to aim for. For example, a single stream targeting 10 Mbps calls for about 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity. This is a planning estimate, not a guarantee: congestion or interruptions can still affect a connection.
Recommended live bitrates for common settings
The following examples are YouTube’s recommended live encoder bitrates. They are not ISP speed guarantees. Use the row matching your codec as well as your resolution and frame rate.

The upload targets in the last column are arithmetic using the same 20% margin, not separate figures published by YouTube. Recommendations can change; check YouTube’s live table when configuring an event. Do not use YouTube’s separate recommendations for encoding ordinary video uploads to choose a live-stream bitrate.
How to check whether your connection is fast enough
- Choose your stream settings. Decide on the resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec you intend to use. “1080p” alone is not enough to select a bitrate: 30 fps and 60 fps, or different codecs, can have different recommendations.
- Look up the recommended live bitrate. Use the matching entry in YouTube’s live encoder guidance. Make sure you are reading the live-stream table rather than guidance for uploading a recorded video.
- Measure upload speed on your real setup. Run a reputable speed test using the computer and network connection you will use for the stream. Test at a representative time and, if practical, repeat it. The upload result is the relevant number; download speed may be much higher.
- Compare the measured upload result with the bitrate and margin. For one stream, aim for available upload capacity of roughly the target bitrate divided by 0.8. If other people or devices share the connection, they can reduce the capacity available to your streaming device.
- Run a realistic test stream. Send the stream at your intended settings with representative movement and audio. Check the preview and stream-health status in YouTube Live Control Room. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate or quality, reduce competing network use, and test again.
A speed test is only a snapshot of conditions at the time it runs. A test stream is the practical check that your encoder, network, and chosen settings work together.

Why a high speed-test result may not be enough
Upload and download are different
Use the test’s outbound or upload result, not its download result. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth, so a strong download number does not demonstrate that your stream can send video reliably.
Your connection may be shared
A fast home or office connection can be shared by other people and devices. Video calls, file transfers, game downloads, or other streams can compete for upload capacity while you are live. Check under conditions similar to the event, and pause nonessential heavy uploads where possible.

Stability matters as well as peak speed
Congestion and network disruptions can interrupt a stream even when one speed test looks good. YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection for live streaming from a computer. Ethernet can remove an unreliable local Wi-Fi link from the path; it does not increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet provider.
What to do if your upload speed is too low or unstable
- Lower the target bitrate or stream quality. Choose a lower resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding recommended bitrate for your codec, then retest.
- Use Ethernet for a computer stream. Connect the streaming computer to the router with a cable if practical, then repeat the test and test stream.
- Reduce competing traffic. Pause large uploads and downloads on the shared connection, and ask other users to avoid bandwidth-heavy activity during the event.
- Retest at the time and on the network you will use. A result from another device, location, or time may not reflect stream conditions.
- Check upload-specific plan details if repeated tests fall short. Advertised plan speeds and availability vary by provider and location; verify the actual upload rate and terms for your address.
If you stream to more than one destination
For simultaneous streaming to multiple platforms, add the target bitrates for all destinations to estimate the total outbound load. YouTube’s guidance for streaming across platforms recommends upload speed 1.5 to 2 times that combined bitrate. This is distinct from the 20% room recommended for a single stream. Run a realistic test with moving video and audio before relying on the setup.

If a service sends one stream to YouTube on your behalf, check which outbound connections actually originate from your location; do not assume the bitrate burden is the same as sending separate streams directly. The guidance above concerns the network connection that sends the stream.

Upload capacity is only one part of a reliable setup. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not above 4 seconds. Configure these in your encoder alongside the correct resolution, codec, and bitrate. They do not replace measuring available upload capacity.
