Check the exact firmware string at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Then compare that complete number with the current documentation for a specific exploit project. The number by itself is not a jailbreak verdict: support depends on the named project, firmware sub-version, entry point, payload or kernel support, console state, limitations, and the date of the information.
This distinction matters because a compatibility list can become obsolete when Sony releases new system software or when a project changes its supported range. Record the version exactly, identify the project you are evaluating, and read its dated release notes or README before changing anything on the console.
Find the complete PS5 firmware version
You can read the installed version without any USB drive, exploit file, or internet download. Use the console’s own information screen:
Recommended Free Tools
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Select Console Information.
- Write down the entire software-version string, including every major, minor, and patch component displayed.
Sony’s product guide identifies this exact location as “Select Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.” Sony’s support instructions also begin with “Go to Settings > System,” where the system-software update settings are located. Do not round the number to a major release such as “5.xx” or “7.xx”; a project may support one patch level and reject another.

What to record
- The complete version string exactly as shown on the console.
- The date on which you checked it.
- Whether the console is currently online, recently updated, or has been restored or modified.
- The name and version of the exploit project whose documentation you are reading.
- The publication or update date of that project’s compatibility information.
This small record lets you or a technician reproduce the check later. It also prevents a common mistake: comparing a remembered firmware number with a list that has since changed.
Why a firmware number is not a jailbreak verdict
“Jailbreak-compatible” is not a single Sony-defined status. It is a shorthand for a particular chain of software components working on a particular console state. At minimum, verify these separate elements:
Firmware range
The project must explicitly include your complete firmware version. A statement that a vulnerability affects a broad range does not necessarily mean the project’s current public payload works on every release in that range.
Entry point
An entry point is the method used to begin execution, such as a browser or WebKit-based path. A project may require a different entry point after a firmware change. Do not treat the words “userland entry point,” “kernel exploit,” and “full jailbreak” as interchangeable.
Kernel and payload support
A userland exploit can be only the first stage. Kernel access and the payloads that run afterward may support fewer versions, require a particular sequence, or have known reliability limits. A compatibility note that omits these details is not enough to establish a practical jailbreak.

Console conditions and limitations
Documentation may distinguish normal consoles from particular system states, require specific media, or warn that higher firmware versions have reduced functionality. Read the project’s limitations instead of inferring support from a headline range.
Date of the evidence
Exploit support is volatile. Sony can publish new system software, and game updates can introduce a choice between updating for a new title and retaining an older firmware. Always check when a list, README, or report was published or last updated.

A repeatable compatibility-check workflow
Use this sequence whenever you need to decide whether your PS5 is in a project’s supported range.
- Capture the version. Follow the menu path above and copy the complete string into a note. A photograph of the screen can help avoid transcription errors.
- Name the project. Decide which exploit or jailbreak project you are actually considering. Do not compare the console with an undated “all versions” chart.
- Open the maintainer’s current documentation. Read the project’s release notes or README, giving priority to the project maintainer’s material over a repost or forum summary.
- Locate an explicit supported range. Check whether your exact major, minor, and patch components appear in the documented range or list. If the project names only selected releases, treat unlisted releases as unconfirmed rather than assuming they are included.
- Check the required entry point and stages. Note the WebKit or other entry method, kernel requirement, payload requirements, and any ordering or reliability instructions stated by the project.
- Read limitations and conditions. Look for restrictions tied to firmware sub-versions, higher versions, console state, required media, or features that are unavailable after entry.
- Verify the date. Record the publication or update date beside the compatibility claim. A secondary report can be useful context, but it should not replace the project’s current documentation.
- Decide before updating. If preserving a potentially usable firmware matters more than access to a newer game or system feature, do not install an update until you have made that trade-off deliberately.
- Keep an audit note. Save the exact version, project name, source date, and the conclusion you reached. Recheck this note whenever the project publishes a new release.
What current project information demonstrates
The available examples show why project-specific checking is essential. They are snapshots, not a universal Sony compatibility table.
| Project or report | Claimed firmware information | Important qualification | Evidence date or status |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5Dev UMTX-Jailbreak | README describes a WebKit-based kernel exploit affecting firmware 1.00 through 7.61. | The README lists selected supported versions through 5.xx, including 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, and 5.50. It says firmware 6.00 and newer requires another WebKit exploit and that higher versions have limitations. | Project README snapshot; check the repository for later changes. |
| Relapse | Firmware 7.00 through 13.60. | This range was reported by Tom’s Hardware; it is not a guarantee for every future release, payload, or console condition. | Tom’s Hardware report published 2026-09-30. |
These entries should not be merged into a single “supported from 1.00 to 13.60” claim. They describe different projects, stages, and evidence. For example, the UMTX description of a vulnerability’s impact through 7.61 is broader than its README’s list of currently supported releases through selected 5.xx versions. Conversely, the Relapse range is a dated report and must be checked against the project’s own current material before action.

How to interpret the UMTX information
If your console is on 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, or 5.50, those versions appear in the selected support list described in the UMTX README. That still leaves the project’s stated entry-point and payload requirements to verify. If the console is on 6.00 or newer, the README says another WebKit exploit is required and notes limitations on higher versions; do not assume that the broad 1.00–7.61 vulnerability statement means the complete chain is ready for your version.
How to interpret the Relapse report
The 2026-09-30 report described support from 7.00 through 13.60. Because that is a dated secondary report, check the maintainer’s current release notes for the exact sub-version, entry path, and known restrictions. A report can accurately describe support on its publication date while becoming incomplete after a new release.
Compare exploit reports without confusing their terms
When two pages appear to disagree, compare the underlying details rather than choosing the larger number. Use the following axes:
| Comparison axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Exact firmware range | Does the source name the complete version or only a broad major-version span? |
| Exploit entry point | What starts the chain, and is that entry point available on this firmware? |
| Kernel or payload support | Does the claim reach kernel access and the payload features you need, or only an earlier userland stage? |
| Reliability notes | Does the maintainer describe retries, crashes, limitations, or firmware-specific behavior? |
| Required media or console conditions | Are a USB device, particular system state, or other conditions required? |
| Publication date | When was the range last verified or updated? |
| Source authority | Is the information from the project maintainer, or is it a secondary news report or repost? |
A page that says “the exploit works on 7.xx” may be using “works” to describe a browser entry point, while another page may reserve that word for a complete kernel-and-payload workflow. Resolve that terminology before deciding that the sources conflict.
Updating versus preserving firmware
Once you know the version, the consequential decision is whether to leave it unchanged. Sony recommends current official software for ordinary use, but an official update can move a console outside a previously reported exploit range. The choice is therefore practical rather than purely technical:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Preserve the current version when a named project explicitly supports it and retaining that possibility is more important than obtaining a newer game’s update or a system feature.
- Update through Sony’s normal process when ordinary online play, security fixes, current services, or a newer game are your priority and you accept that an older exploit range may no longer apply.
- Pause and verify when a game, forum post, or video tells you to update but does not identify the exact required firmware and the project documentation that would remain available afterward.
Tom’s Hardware reported on 2026-09-30 that some game updates were being reported as requiring firmware 14.00, while Relapse was reported as supporting 7.00–13.60. That creates a concrete trade-off for a console in that range: installing a game update that requires 14.00 may provide access to newer content but can move the system beyond the reported Relapse range. Treat both figures as time-sensitive and verify the current project source before proceeding.
Sony’s update and modification warning
Sony states: “Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.” The same notice warns that installing update data from another source or method, or on a console altered or modified in any way, might prevent proper operation and can void the system warranty or affect warranty and repair services.
This warning has two separate implications. First, use official update files and Sony’s documented process for any legitimate update or reinstallation. Second, understand that a modified console can have operational, warranty, and repair consequences even if the firmware number itself appears in an exploit project’s list.

A FAT32 or exFAT USB flash drive is optional equipment for Sony’s offline update or reinstallation workflow. It is not needed to view the firmware version and it does not make a console jailbreak-compatible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Offline update file
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS5at the drive’s top level. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Place Sony’s official update file in that folder with the required filename
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Allow approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the PS5 update file, as stated on Sony’s support instructions.
Reinstallation file
Sony documents the same PS5/UPDATE folder pattern for a reinstallation file and specifies approximately 1.2 GB of free space. Reinstallation is a separate, more destructive operation from a normal update; follow Sony’s current instructions and back up data where appropriate before selecting it.

The USB procedure is an official maintenance path. It should not be presented as an exploit, and the presence of the drive does not change the compatibility result from the firmware-and-project check.
Troubleshooting ambiguous or conflicting results
The version is shown only as a major release
Return to Console Information and copy the complete string. If a project lists only selected patch releases, do not infer that every patch in the major release is supported.
A chart says “all versions” but has no date
Discard it as a final authority. Find the maintainer’s current README or release notes and record the date. An undated chart cannot establish present support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA news report and the project README differ
Compare publication dates and scope. Prefer the maintainer’s current technical details for exact entry points, payloads, and limitations; use the news report as a dated account of what was reported at that time.
Your version is in a vulnerability range but not a support list
Treat the console as unconfirmed. A vulnerability affecting a range describes potential exposure, not necessarily a publicly usable, complete jailbreak for every release in that range.
A game update demands newer firmware
Stop before accepting the update. Write down the game’s required version, compare it with the project’s current supported range, and choose whether the newer game or preserving the current firmware has greater value to you. Do not let an automatic update make that irreversible choice.
The console has already been modified
Separate compatibility from risk. Even if a project lists the firmware, Sony warns that modified consoles or nonofficial update methods can affect operation, warranty, and repair services. Follow the project’s own recovery instructions and Sony’s official update guidance rather than mixing procedures from unrelated sources.
A final checklist before you act
- Have you copied the entire version string from Settings > System > System Software > Console Information?
- Have you named the exact exploit project rather than relying on a generic jailbreak chart?
- Does the project’s current documentation explicitly include your complete version?
- Have you checked the required entry point, kernel or payload stage, reliability notes, and limitations?
- Have you recorded the source’s publication or update date?
- Have you considered whether an official update or a game requirement would move the console outside the reported range?
- If using a USB drive, is it being used only for Sony’s documented offline update or reinstallation process?
- Do you understand Sony’s warning about unofficial update files and modified consoles?
The defensible answer to “Is my PS5 jailbreak-compatible?” is therefore conditional: it is compatible only when a named, current project explicitly supports the console’s exact firmware and the required exploit stages and conditions are available. If any of those pieces is missing or outdated, mark the result unconfirmed and re-check rather than guessing.
