Open the game’s official PlayStation Store listing or publisher page and look for the platform label. If it says PS5, the game is announced for PS5. Confirm the release date and edition, check whether your console can use the required purchase format, update system software, and make sure enough SSD space is free. A PS4 compatibility statement is a separate check and does not prove that a new PS5-exclusive game will run.
Recheck the listing close to purchase or launch. Upcoming platform plans, editions, physical availability and dates can change.
1. Start with the game’s authoritative listing
Use the exact title’s official PlayStation Store page or the game publisher’s official page. Sony’s PS5 catalogue includes a “Coming soon” area, and individual product pages identify the platforms and editions associated with a title. A retailer page, social-media post or search-result snippet can be outdated, region-specific or describing a different edition, so treat those as discovery tools rather than the final compatibility check.
Search for the exact title
Match the complete name, subtitle and release version. Remakes, bundles, deluxe editions and similarly named earlier games can have different platform support. If the game is still announced rather than available, open the listing marked for the forthcoming release instead of a page for a predecessor or a similarly titled PS4 product.

Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Check the region and account context
Store pages can show different currencies, dates, age ratings or availability by country. Confirm that the page is for the PlayStation Store region used by your account, and read any note that limits a release to a particular territory. A platform label is still the key signal, but a regional release restriction can affect when you can buy or download the game.
2. Read the platform label correctly
The platform field is the decisive first check. A listing that explicitly says PS5 identifies the game as a PS5 product. If the same listing also says PS4, the publisher has announced a PS4 version as well. If only PS5 appears, treat the game as PS5-only unless the publisher later changes the listing.
| Listing label | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | The listed product is announced for PS5. | That a PS4 version exists, that every edition has identical content, or that a disc version will be manufactured. |
| PS4 and PS5 | Both console generations have a listed version of that product or package. | That the two versions have identical graphics, features, saves or upgrade rules. |
| PS4 only | The listed product is for PS4. | That a PS5-native release is planned. |
| Platform not shown or unclear | Nothing reliable about PS5 support. | Compatibility inferred from trailers, leaks or a retailer category. |
Do not infer support from marketing language
Words such as “next generation,” “console exclusive” or “coming to PlayStation” are not substitutes for the platform field. “PlayStation” can refer to more than one generation, and an exclusive can be exclusive to a console family while still shipping on PS4. Use the product listing’s explicit PS5 or PS4/PS5 designation.
Watch for listing changes
An announced game can move between generations, receive a delayed version or have an edition removed. Save the official page and check it again near release. The label visible at the time you buy is more useful than an old announcement.
3. Confirm the release date and availability status
A platform label answers “where,” not “when.” Read the release date, preorder status and any early-access or regional-release wording. “Coming soon” means the game is not necessarily downloadable yet; a date can also apply to one edition while another follows later.

Distinguish announced from available
- Announced: The publisher has identified a PS5 version, but the date or purchase window may still change.
- Preorder: A PS5 product is offered before release. Check the stated release date and the edition delivered on that date.
- Available: The page provides a purchase or download option for the current release.
- Delisted, unavailable or region-limited: The platform may be supported in principle while the product cannot currently be purchased in your store.
Record the edition you intend to buy
Standard, deluxe, ultimate, collector and cross-generation packages can have different content and entitlements. A bundle may include both PS4 and PS5 licenses, while a cheaper listing may include only one generation. Read the “included” or “edition” panel rather than assuming that every listing with the same title grants both versions.
4. Match the purchase format to your PS5
PS5 consoles are sold with different drive configurations. A PS5 with a compatible disc drive can use a physical game disc when the title has a disc release. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read game discs, so it must use a digital license downloaded from the PlayStation Store unless a compatible disc drive is installed for that console model.
| Your console | If the game has a digital edition | If the game has only or also a disc edition |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with disc drive | Buy or redeem the digital version and download it. | Insert the compatible Blu-ray game disc to install or start the game, following the product’s requirements. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | Buy or redeem the digital version; this is the usable format without a drive. | A disc-only copy cannot be used unless your model supports an added compatible drive and it is installed. |
Check whether a physical release exists
Sony notes that some games offer both physical Blu-ray and digital editions, while others do not. Physical availability can also differ by region and edition. The publisher’s page or the PlayStation Store listing should identify the formats. Do not buy a disc because a retailer shows a product image if the official listing describes a digital-only release.
Check disc and edition requirements before paying
Read whether the disc contains the PS5 version, a PS4 version with an upgrade entitlement, or a bundle containing both. Upgrade rules and included content belong to the specific product, not to PS5 compatibility in general. Keep the disc available if the product requires it as a license check after installation.
5. Decide whether a standard PS5 or PS5 Pro is required
A listing that supports PS5 identifies the console generation; it does not normally require a PS5 Pro simply because the game is demanding. Unless the publisher states a Pro-only requirement—which would be an exceptional and explicit product condition—a PS5 listing is the compatibility signal for standard PS5 hardware as well as the Digital Edition. A Pro-enhanced label may promise higher image quality or performance, but enhancement is different from basic ability to run the game.

Look for explicit enhancement notes
Read the technical or edition notes for statements about PS5 Pro enhancements, performance modes or features requiring a particular display. Those notes describe optional benefits, not a new platform generation. If the page does not state a Pro requirement, do not treat online speculation or a high-resolution trailer as proof that the base PS5 is unsupported.

Sony’s support guidance recommends keeping PS5 system software current. An upcoming game can depend on fixes delivered through a system update, and an outdated console can fail to install or launch a title even when the platform label is correct.
- Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in to the account that will own the game.
- Open Settings, choose System, then System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings and check for an available update.
- Install the update, allow the console to restart, and do not interrupt power during the process.
- After restarting, return to the system-software screen and confirm that no update remains pending.
If an update cannot download, check the network connection, free storage and PlayStation service status, then retry. Do not assume a failed update means the game is incompatible; it is a console-maintenance problem until the official listing or support information says otherwise.
7. Verify free storage and expansion support
Before release day, open the PS5 storage screen and check the available space on the internal SSD. The product page may publish an install size, but an upcoming listing does not always provide a final size. Reserve enough room for the installation and any day-one update rather than relying on the advertised download alone.
Check internal storage
- Open Settings.
- Select Storage to view console storage and the free-space figure.
- Review installed games, captures and applications that can be moved or deleted.
- Keep saved data and captures you need; back them up or transfer them before removing content.
If the game will not install, compare the available space with the download and installation requirement shown by the console. A partially downloaded file can also consume space, so cancel a failed download and remove its incomplete data before trying again if the system reports insufficient capacity.

Use a compatible M.2 SSD when necessary
Sony says a compatible M.2 SSD can store, download and play PS5 games, provided it meets Sony’s minimum performance and size requirements. Compatibility is not based on the connector alone: check the current PS5 support specifications for the required interface, performance, physical dimensions and heat-dissipation provisions before buying an expansion drive. After installation, format the drive in the PS5 storage settings and move or install games there.
An external USB drive can be useful for storing PS5 games, but PS5 games generally need to be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD to play. Follow the console’s storage prompts for the specific operation instead of assuming every USB device can run the game directly.
8. Treat PS4 backward compatibility as a separate question
PS5 backward compatibility concerns games made for PS4. It does not determine whether a forthcoming PS5-native exclusive has a PS4 version. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, while some products are marked “Playable on: PS4 only.” That title-by-title compatibility work is separate from checking the platform label of a new release.
When backward compatibility helps
If the official listing identifies the upcoming game as PS4 and PS5, the PS4 edition may be usable on PS5 through the PS4 backward-compatibility feature. If you own an older PS4 game, search its own product page and look for the PS5 playability designation. Do not transfer the result from one game to another.

A PS5-only game has no PS4 version to run through backward compatibility. A PS4-only label on an unrelated title cannot be used as evidence that a future PS5 exclusive will work on PS4. Likewise, a PS4 game being playable on PS5 says nothing about whether a PS5 Digital Edition can read its physical disc.

9. Use this pre-purchase verification workflow
- Open the official listing. Start with the PlayStation Store or the publisher’s page for the exact title and region.
- Read the platform field. Confirm PS5 appears. Note whether PS4 is also listed.
- Capture the release information. Record the date, preorder status and any regional or edition caveat.
- Choose the edition. Read included content and identify whether it grants a PS5 license, a PS4 license, or both.
- Choose the format. Digital Edition owners should select a digital product unless their console has a compatible disc drive. Disc-drive owners should verify that a physical PS5 release exists.
- Check console readiness. Update system software and confirm sufficient free storage.
- Check expansion if needed. Use only an M.2 SSD that meets Sony’s current PS5 requirements.
- Recheck near launch. Confirm that the platform, date, edition and format are unchanged immediately before purchase or download.
10. Compare the common compatibility situations
| Situation | Can the PS5 run it? | Action before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Official listing says PS5 only; digital edition available | Yes, on a PS5 platform, subject to software, storage and account requirements. | Buy the digital PS5 edition and verify free SSD space. |
| Official listing says PS5 and PS4 | Yes on PS5; a PS4 version is also listed. | Confirm which version and upgrade entitlement the chosen edition includes. |
| Official listing says PS5; physical edition announced | Yes, if you use the compatible disc format or a digital license. | Check that your console has a usable disc drive, or select digital. |
| PS5 Digital Edition and disc-only product | Not without a compatible disc solution for that console model. | Find the digital edition or verify whether an approved drive can be added. |
| Only a trailer or retailer page mentions PlayStation | Not established. | Wait for the official Store or publisher platform label. |
| PS4 game marked “Playable on: PS4 only” | Not established for PS5 backward compatibility. | Use the title’s own compatibility designation; do not generalize from other PS4 games. |
11. Troubleshoot an unclear or failed installation
The listing does not show PS5
Check that you opened the correct product, edition and store region. Search the publisher’s official page for a platform statement. If neither source identifies PS5, do not buy on the assumption that a PlayStation release automatically means PS5 support.
The game appears in your library but will not download
Confirm that the account owns the PS5 entitlement rather than only a PS4 license, and inspect the product page for edition restrictions. Then check system software, network connectivity and available storage. A missing entitlement or an incomplete update is different from a platform incompatibility.
A disc is rejected by a Digital Edition
A Digital Edition has no disc-reading capability by default. Use the digital listing, or verify that your specific model supports a compatible drive and that one is installed. Do not repeatedly insert a disc or purchase another disc edition expecting software settings to add a drive.
Recommended Free Tools
The download stops for lack of space
Open Storage, remove or move unneeded games and media, and clear incomplete download data before retrying. If internal capacity remains insufficient, install a compatible M.2 SSD that satisfies Sony’s requirements, format it in the PS5 and select it as the installation location.
The release date has changed
Return to the official listing rather than relying on an old preorder receipt or announcement article. Confirm the new date, edition and platform label; upcoming plans are subject to change until launch.
12. What to verify on launch day
Perform one final check shortly before downloading or inserting a disc. Confirm that the official page still lists PS5, that the date applies to your region, and that the product you are buying is the intended edition. Install any pending system update, check free storage again, and ensure your internet connection can complete the download and patches.
For a disc release, verify that the package identifies the PS5 version and keep the disc available if the console requires it for licensing. For a digital release, sign in to the purchasing account and use the PS5 product page rather than a similarly named PS4 listing. If the listing changed after you placed a preorder, contact PlayStation or the publisher through the support route shown on the official product page before attempting an unsupported workaround.

13. The evidence behind PS5 compatibility
Sony’s compatibility guidance is intentionally title-specific. In a March 18, 2020 PlayStation Blog statement, Hideaki Nishino wrote: “With more than 4000 games published on PS4, we will continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time.” Current support guidance continues to describe the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable on PS5 while identifying exceptions. That history explains why the individual game listing—not a broad assumption about the PlayStation brand—is the right evidence for an upcoming exclusive.
