Check the exact model, operating-system version, hardware, language, region, and the setting for the individual feature. A phone can advertise AI while a particular writing, translation, image, or assistant function is limited to newer models, requires a specific update, or sends requests to the cloud instead of running locally.
Use the workflow below to verify support on an iPhone, an Android phone using Gemini, or a Samsung Galaxy device. Treat a vendor’s current compatibility list and the AI controls on your phone as the final authority for your model and region.
What “on-device AI” means
On-device AI runs at least part of an AI model on the phone’s processor rather than sending every prompt to a remote server. Local execution can keep a function working without a network connection, reduce round-trip delay, and limit the data that leaves the phone. It also consumes battery, storage, memory, and specialized processor capacity.

Support is not a single yes-or-no property. A phone may run speech transcription locally but use a cloud model for image generation. A feature may work offline for short inputs but require an internet connection for larger requests. Vendors can also enable a function on one model in a product family and omit it from another with a similar name.

For that reason, verify the specific feature, not just whether the phone has an “AI” label or a recent release date.
The six checks that establish compatibility
- Record the exact model and software. On Android, open Settings > About phone. On iPhone, open Settings > General > About. Note the complete model name, model number if shown, operating-system version, and available storage.
- Install the latest supported update. Samsung’s path is Settings > Software update (or System updates) > Download and install > Check for updates. Apple and Google also tie their supported feature sets to current platform software, so an old release can hide a feature that the hardware could otherwise run.
- Compare the model with the vendor’s eligibility list. Use Apple’s Apple Intelligence requirements for iPhone, Google’s Gemini Intelligence requirements for Android, or Samsung’s Galaxy AI compatibility list. Match the exact model and regional edition rather than relying on a family name such as “Pro,” “Ultra,” or “Plus.”
- Open the phone’s AI controls. A visible AI menu is useful evidence that the software recognizes the device, but its absence can also indicate an unsupported model, language, region, account, or update. Some functions have separate switches.
- Check language, region, account, permissions, and storage. Rollouts can differ by country, language, account type, and software version. Assistant features may require location access, a default assistant selection, or other permissions.
- Confirm where the named feature runs. Look for an “on device,” “device-only,” or offline indicator. If the phone offers a cloud-processing switch, disable cloud processing temporarily and test the feature again. A feature that disappears after that change is not fully local.
iPhone: checking Apple Intelligence support
Supported iPhone generations
Apple’s cited requirements list Apple Intelligence for iPhone 16 models or later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Other iPhone 15 models are not included in that list. The requirement is model-specific, so an iPhone 16-family name alone does not tell you whether every regional variant or feature is enabled.
The cited Apple documentation requires iOS 27 for the supported feature set. Update first, then recheck the Apple Intelligence controls; an eligible phone on an older release may not display them.

The iPhone’s device language and Siri language must be set to the same language supported for Apple Intelligence. A mismatch can prevent activation even when the model and iOS release qualify. Availability can also vary by language and region.

Apple specifies that Apple Intelligence can reserve up to 8 GB of storage on other supported models and up to 14 GB on specified newer models. These are capacity requirements for the on-device models, not a promise that every feature uses exactly that amount. Free space may be needed before the models can download.
How to verify an iPhone
- Open Settings > General > About and write down the model name and iOS version.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest release offered for that iPhone.
- Confirm that the model is an iPhone 16 model or later, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max.
- Check Settings > General > Language & Region and Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Set the device and Siri to the same supported language.
- Keep enough free storage for the model download. If the Apple Intelligence menu does not appear, restart after updating and recheck the model, language, and region.
- Test each function separately. Writing tools, summaries, image functions, and Siri-related capabilities can have different availability rules even on a supported iPhone.
Android: checking Gemini Intelligence and Gemini Nano
Gemini Intelligence hardware gates
Google’s Gemini Intelligence requirements identify several gates, not merely an Android version. The listed baseline includes:
- At least 12 GB of RAM.
- A qualified system-on-chip (SoC).
- Advanced on-device AI processing capability.
- Current media-processing capabilities.
- Software-performance benchmarks that meet Google’s requirements.
Because the SoC, neural-processing hardware, media engine, and benchmark results are evaluated together, two Android phones with the same RAM can have different eligibility. Google also states that features vary by country, language, and device.
What Gemini Nano and AICore do
Gemini Nano is Google’s local generative model for supported Android devices. Android’s AICore system service manages on-device execution and model updates. Google describes on-device generative AI as executing prompts locally and eliminating server calls for that local operation.

AICore support does not mean every Gemini request is local. If Nano is unavailable, unsupported for a request, or unable to handle the required capability, the system can fall back to a cloud Gemini model. The result may still appear in the same app, so inspect the feature’s processing information rather than assuming that a Gemini response stayed on the phone.
Android verification procedure
- Open Settings > About phone. Record the exact model, Android version, RAM amount if shown, and available storage.
- Install the latest update offered under Settings > System > Software update (the wording differs by manufacturer).
- Check Google’s Gemini Intelligence eligibility for the exact model. A phone with less than 12 GB of RAM does not meet the listed baseline, even if another AI-branded function is present.
- Open the Gemini app or assistant settings and look for device-specific eligibility, model-download, or on-device processing information. Some features also require Gemini to be the default assistant.
- Check permissions and settings that Google identifies as dependencies, including Personal Intelligence, Proactive Assistance, location, and any requested account permissions.
- Test with a supported local task while offline or with mobile and Wi-Fi data temporarily disabled. If the function fails, it may require a cloud model; restore connectivity before testing other features.
Why one Android AI feature can work while another does not
Local summarization, transcription, or rewriting may fit within Gemini Nano’s model and memory limits, while a larger multimodal request needs a cloud model. A manufacturer can also expose AICore to one app but not another. Treat the app, task, and processing mode as three separate compatibility checks.
Samsung Galaxy: checking Galaxy AI
Required software and device list
Samsung requires a compatible Galaxy model running One UI 6.1 or later for Galaxy AI. The supported list includes selected Galaxy S, Z, Tab, and A models; it is not a blanket entitlement for every device in those families. Availability can vary by device and operating-system version, so use the current list for your model and region.

Find the Galaxy AI controls
- Open Settings and tap Galaxy AI if that entry is present.
- On some models, use Settings > Advanced features > Intelligent features.
- If neither path exists, install the latest One UI update, restart, and check the exact model against Samsung’s compatibility information.
- Open each available feature’s details. Do not infer that all Galaxy AI tools share the same processing method.
Local versus cloud processing on Galaxy devices
Samsung says most translations are handled on the device itself. Other functions, including many formatting, summarizing, correction, and image-editing tools, can use the cloud. The precise split can change by feature and software release.

To restrict processing, open Settings > Galaxy AI and enable Process data only on device. Some features become unavailable when cloud processing is disabled. This switch is the clearest practical test: if a tool disappears or reports that an internet connection is required, it was not fully local.
How to tell whether a feature is truly local

Do not treat a single offline success as proof that every AI function is local. Verify each function you care about, particularly image editing, long documents, and assistant actions.

A phone with more headline features may be less useful if your language is unsupported or the functions you need require a connection. Conversely, a device with fewer branded tools may provide the local transcription or translation workflow you actually want.

Troubleshooting a missing or disabled AI feature
The phone is eligible but the menu is absent
- Recheck the exact model number, not just the marketing family.
- Install the newest supported operating-system or One UI release and restart.
- Verify device and assistant language settings, especially on iPhone.
- Check country, account, location, and permission requirements.
- Free the storage needed for local model downloads.
- Allow time for a staged software or model rollout after updating.
The feature works only with internet access
That behavior usually indicates a cloud dependency, a cloud fallback, or an account service rather than a failure of the phone’s local processor. Check the feature’s processing notice and retry with the vendor’s device-only setting enabled. If the feature stops, record it as cloud-dependent.
The phone has an AI menu but one tool is missing
AI menus are collections of independently gated tools. Compare the missing tool’s language, region, app version, permissions, and model requirements with a tool that works. A supported phone can legitimately lack a particular image, assistant, or writing function.
The phone becomes slow or storage is low
Local models use RAM, processor time, battery, and reserved storage. Close demanding apps, keep the system updated, and maintain free space for model updates. If the vendor offers a cloud fallback, using it can reduce local resource pressure but changes the privacy and connectivity characteristics.
A printable compatibility checklist
- Exact model name and model number recorded.
- Current iOS, Android, or One UI version installed.
- Vendor eligibility list checked for the precise model and region.
- RAM, SoC, and available storage meet the stated requirements.
- Device and assistant languages match a supported language where required.
- Country, account, location, and permissions satisfy the feature’s conditions.
- AI settings menu is present and the individual tool is enabled.
- Offline or device-only testing completed for every function you plan to use.
- Cloud fallback and the consequences of disabling it understood.
If any item is unknown, the correct conclusion is “not yet verified,” not “supported.” Compatibility lists and on-phone processing controls can change with software releases, so repeat the checks after a major update or when traveling to a different region.
