The reliable way to tell whether your phone has an IR blaster is to check the specifications or support page for its exact model and regional version. On Android, a technical check can also query the consumer infrared hardware feature and call ConsumerIrManager.hasIrEmitter(). A dark opening on the phone or a remote-control app is only a clue, not proof of an emitter.
1. Identify your exact phone model
Open the phone’s About phone or device-information screen and note its full model name and model number. Record the sales region or country if it is shown. Similar names can refer to different devices or configurations, so do not rely on specifications for a related model.
2. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or support page
Search the manufacturer’s official specifications, FAQ, support page, or manual for terms such as IR blaster, infrared remote control, and consumer IR. The manufacturer’s information for the exact device is the most useful consumer-level confirmation.
For example, Xiaomi lists an IR blaster among the components of the REDMI Note 14 5G and says it can control IR-enabled appliances such as TVs, air conditioners, and sound systems. That confirms the feature for that model; it does not establish that other REDMI or Xiaomi phones have it. ZTE likewise advises checking its official website to see whether a phone is configured with infrared.

3. Use Android’s hardware check (technical method)
Android documents a consumer infrared hardware feature and an API for checking for an emitter. The ConsumerIrManager API reference says the API requires PackageManager.FEATURE_CONSUMER_IR and provides hasIrEmitter() to check whether the device has an infrared emitter. Android’s Sensors Overview also covers querying hardware features and sensor availability at runtime.
This method is intended for Android diagnostics or app development. If you are not developing an app, you can ask the manufacturer or support team to confirm the feature, or use a diagnostic app that reports the Android hardware feature. Treat the manufacturer’s model-specific information as the reference for your phone.

4. Don’t treat an opening or remote app as proof
A small dark opening on a phone’s edge may look like an infrared window, and a remote app may be preinstalled or downloadable. Neither clue establishes that the exact phone has a functioning consumer IR emitter. An app supplies software controls; it cannot add built-in IR hardware.

If you want to control a traditional infrared appliance, you need an IR emitter or a compatible gateway. Verify compatibility and current app or accessory availability before buying. Installing a remote app alone does not turn a phone without an emitter into an IR remote.
