Start by checking the breach notice through the organization’s official website or a contact method you already trust. Then search the affected email address in Have I Been Pwned, check any potentially exposed password with Pwned Passwords, and follow the steps matched to the data involved. A clean result is not proof that your information was never exposed.

How do I check whether my personal information was exposed?

  1. Read and verify the notice. Note which organization was affected, what categories of information it says were involved, and any recommended actions or offered support. Confirm the notice by visiting the organization’s official website yourself or using a contact route you already know; don’t rely on a link or phone number in an unexpected message. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides tailored steps at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.
  2. Look up the affected email address. Search it using Have I Been Pwned. Review any listed breaches and compare their dates and exposed data types with the notice.
  3. Check a password only if it may have been exposed. Use Pwned Passwords, then replace a password that appears in the results wherever you used it.
  4. Take action based on the data involved. Financial details, health insurance information, Social Security numbers, and login credentials call for different follow-up; see the relevant sections below.
  5. Report suspected identity theft. If you find unfamiliar accounts or transactions, use IdentityTheft.gov to report the problem and get a personal recovery plan.

How can I check whether my email was in a data breach?

Enter the affected address on Have I Been Pwned. The service searches breach records it has loaded and shows breaches in which it finds that address. Check whether a result includes the organization named in your notice and what kinds of information the listing identifies.

If the service says the address was not found, that means it did not find it in the breach data it currently indexes. It does not establish that the address has never been exposed: a breach may not be included, and a listing may not cover every incident. Treat the lookup as a check against one service’s records, not a universal clearance test. Have I Been Pwned also offers breach notifications.

How do I check whether a password was exposed?

If a password may have been part of a breach, check it with Pwned Passwords. The service says it hashes the password locally and sends only the first five characters of its SHA-1 hash for a k-anonymity lookup; it does not send the full password. Don’t enter a password into an unfamiliar lookup site.

If the password appears in the results, change it on every account where you used it, starting with accounts that reuse the same password and important accounts such as email and financial services. Use a different strong password for each account; a password manager can help you keep them unique.

A password that is not found is not necessarily strong, and it may still appear in breach data that the service does not index. As Have I Been Pwned puts it, “That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good password, merely that it’s not indexed on this site.”

What should I do if my Social Security number was exposed?

For readers in the United States, the FTC’s data-breach guidance can tailor next steps to the information involved. If a Social Security number was exposed, review your credit reports and look for unfamiliar accounts. Depending on the circumstances, consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with the credit bureaus. If you find signs of misuse, report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan.

The FTC’s recovery steps direct identity-theft victims to obtain credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion and record unfamiliar accounts or transactions. Keep notes of what you find and when you reported it.

How can I tell whether a breach notice is genuine?

Look up the organization’s official website independently and use its published contact details to confirm the notice. Be wary of messages that demand immediate payment or personal information through an unsolicited link or phone number. A breach can be followed by impersonation attempts, so verify claims through a known official channel before responding. FTC guidance says organizations should explain how they will contact affected people.

Does a clean breach-check result mean my information is safe?

No. An email search covers breach records loaded into Have I Been Pwned, while Pwned Passwords checks whether a password appears in its indexed password data. Neither result proves that information was never exposed elsewhere. A negative lookup also says nothing by itself about whether a password is strong. Continue to follow the breach notice and watch for unfamiliar account, financial, or medical activity relevant to the exposed data.

Are paid identity-monitoring services necessary?

No. Free checks and official recovery guidance are available through the services and government resources above. A breached organization may offer monitoring or restoration support, but those services vary in what data sources they monitor, how useful or timely their alerts are, and what help they provide. Monitoring cannot guarantee prevention of identity theft or detection of every exposure; compare the offer with the free steps before deciding whether it suits your needs.

What if I live outside the United States?

The FTC and the credit-reporting steps above are U.S.-focused. If you live elsewhere, follow your national privacy regulator’s advice, use your country’s credit-reporting system where applicable, and consult the organization’s country-specific breach notice. The email and password lookups can still help check the records those services index, but their results remain limited to their datasets.
