Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start with the retailer’s official breach notice, reached through its website or app—not a link in an unexpected message. Confirm what information was involved and whether the retailer says your account was affected. An email lookup such as Have I Been Pwned can provide another clue, but a clean result does not prove you were unaffected. Then take steps based on the type of data exposed.
1. Check the retailer’s official notice
Type the retailer’s web address yourself or use a saved bookmark, then look for a breach notice, security update, or support contact. The retailer’s notice is the best source for the incident’s reported scope and any steps or services it offers. The FTC recommends checking the affected company’s website for incident-specific information and says breach notices should explain what information was involved: FTC data breach response guidance and FTC consumer alert.
Look for the incident date, the kinds of data involved, whether the retailer says your account was affected, how it will contact customers, and whether it offers free remediation or monitoring. If the notice does not answer whether you were affected, use the support channel listed on the retailer’s independently accessed site or app and ask directly.
2. Verify breach messages independently
An email or text about a breach may be genuine, but scammers can also use a retailer’s name to solicit passwords or payment details. Do not click an unexpected message’s link or call its number to submit personal information. Find the company’s contact details independently and use a number you know is correct; a logo or caller ID alone does not verify a message. See the FTC guidance on recognizing and avoiding phishing scams.

- LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.
3. Use an email breach lookup as a secondary check
Have I Been Pwned lets you check whether an email address appears in the breach records loaded into its service. If it finds a match, review the listed breach and compare it with the retailer’s notice. Do not enter your password into an unverified checker.
A no-match result means only that the address was not found in that service’s available records. It does not prove the retailer’s incident is included in the service, that your account was not affected, or that other identifiers—such as a card number or Social Security number—were not exposed. Treat the lookup as a clue, not a complete inventory of your data or a substitute for contacting the retailer.

4. Match your next steps to the data involved
Login credentials
- Change the exposed password, plus any reused or similar passwords on other accounts. Use a unique password for each account.
- Change exposed security-question answers where applicable, and enable multifactor authentication if the service offers it. The FTC’s identity-theft guidance covers protective steps after an exposure.
Payment-card information
- Contact the card issuer using the number on your card or its official app or website. Ask whether it recommends replacing the card number.
- Review transactions and report anything you do not recognize to the issuer.
Social Security number or other sensitive identity data
- Order and review your free credit reports, looking for accounts you do not recognize. The FTC specifically recommends this if your Social Security number was exposed.
- Consider placing a credit freeze or fraud alert. The FTC’s identity-theft guidance explains these options.
If the retailer offers free monitoring or other remediation, check what it covers and how to enroll through the official notice. Monitoring is not a way to undo exposure; it may check databases beyond credit reports, but it does not establish whether a particular incident affected you. A paid service is optional, not a replacement for the steps above.
5. Get help if you find misuse
If you see unfamiliar accounts or other signs your information has been misused, report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery plan. The FTC also provides recommendations based on the type of information exposed at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach.

What to remember about breach checks
- The retailer’s independently accessed notice and support channel are the right sources for confirming the reported incident and customer-specific actions.
- A third-party email lookup can surface a relevant breach, but its records may not include the incident you are checking.
- Act according to the exposed data: secure credentials, contact the card issuer about payment information, and review credit records or consider a freeze if sensitive identity data was involved.
- Watch for follow-on phishing and verify any request through a contact method you found independently.
This guidance is U.S.-focused because it relies on FTC and IdentityTheft.gov resources. Breach-notification requirements and recovery processes differ by jurisdiction.
