What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To check USB4, look for Windows 11’s USB4 Hubs and Devices page and a USB4 Host Router in Device Manager, then confirm which physical ports support USB4 in your PC maker’s specifications. To check PCIe 5.0, consult the exact computer or motherboard manual for the particular expansion slot or M.2 connector you plan to use. Neither a USB-C connector nor a chipset name proves support on its own.
Check whether Windows detects USB4
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB > USB4 Hubs and Devices.
- If the page appears, Windows has detected a USB4 host router. The page can also show attached USB4 hubs and devices and their capabilities. Microsoft says the page is enabled when a USB4 host router is detected: Microsoft’s USB4 settings documentation.
- If the page is missing, open Device Manager, select View > Devices by connection, and look for a USB4 Host Router. Microsoft describes the host router and its associated driver in its USB4 connection-manager documentation.
Do not treat a missing Settings page as definitive proof that the PC lacks USB4. Some host routers are dynamically enumerated only when a USB4 device is attached, which can affect visibility. Check the exact computer model’s specifications as well.
Verify the specific USB-C port
A USB-C connector describes the connector shape, not the data standard supported by that port. Use the manufacturer’s port-by-port specifications to confirm whether the port supports USB4. A USB4 device may have limited functionality when connected to a port that does not support USB4, and USB4 operation also requires a suitable cable. USB-IF explains that USB4 connections support backward compatibility and operate at the best mutual capability of the connected devices: USB-IF’s USB4 overview. Microsoft also offers USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
A USB4 Host Router in Windows is evidence of host-level USB4 hardware enumeration, not a port map. Check the PC maker’s specifications to learn which physical ports provide USB4. Also, USB4 does not guarantee that every feature is enabled: PCIe tunneling may be disabled by platform policy or user settings in some implementations, and USB, DisplayPort, and PCIe tunneling have separate requirements. Microsoft documents one such distinction in its USB4 host-router PCIe validation guidance.

- Up to 120 Gbps of bandwidth for superfast data transfers and video output
- DisplayPort 2.1 port supports up to three 8K 60 Hz displays with DSC
Check whether a particular slot supports PCIe 5.0
- For a prebuilt PC, record the exact computer model. For a custom desktop, record the motherboard and processor models.
- Open the PC or motherboard maker’s specifications and manual. Find the individual PCIe expansion slot or M.2 connector you intend to use, and confirm its supported PCIe generation.
- Read the notes on lane allocation and sharing. A slot’s capabilities can depend on the processor, motherboard, and configuration, and different slots on the same system may support different generations.
Platform-level support is not a guarantee that every slot or M.2 connector supports PCIe 5.0. For example, AMD’s AM5 chipset information documents platform features and directs users to the manufacturer for specific details. For an upgrade or purchase decision, the exact slot documentation is decisive. The available official guidance does not establish a universal Windows screen that reports the PCIe generation of every internal slot, so do not rely on a generic Device Manager label as conclusive proof.

USB4 can carry PCI Express traffic through tunneling, but that does not establish that the computer has an internal PCIe 5.0 expansion slot or M.2 connector. The USB4 host-router validation requirement concerns PCIe tunneling over a USB4 connection; internal slot generation is a separate, motherboard- and platform-specific question. Check the relevant USB4 port and the exact internal slot independently.
