To find out whether your laptop’s RAM or storage can be upgraded, look up the exact model—not just its product family—in the manufacturer’s specifications, parts lookup, and service manual. Check memory and storage independently: RAM may be soldered or partly socketed, while a replaceable drive still has to match the laptop’s supported format and interface.
1. Find the laptop’s complete model identifier
Start with the model label on the laptop, its system information, or the manufacturer’s support page. Record any generation, product number, machine type, or configuration suffix. Two laptops sold under the same broad family name can have different boards and upgrade options, so a family name alone is not enough to select a part.
Use that identifier to open the manufacturer’s product specifications, user guide, parts lookup, and hardware maintenance or service manual. Lenovo’s guidance recommends these sources for determining maximum supported memory and compatible parts: Lenovo: how to check RAM size and frequency.
2. Check whether RAM is replaceable
In the specifications, search for “memory,” “maximum supported RAM,” “onboard,” and “soldered.” Onboard or soldered memory is attached to the motherboard and is not a replaceable memory module. Some laptops combine soldered RAM with one or more sockets, so the presence of onboard memory does not by itself tell you whether an additional module can be installed.

Use the manual to confirm sockets and serviceability
Search the maintenance or service manual for memory-module removal or replacement instructions. A documented procedure is useful evidence that a module is replaceable; if you cannot find one, investigate further rather than treating the absence as proof that the RAM is soldered. HP Support’s example for the HP ENVY x360 13-ay0045au shows how specifications and a service manual can be used together; it describes that specific model, not HP laptops generally: HP Support Community: HP ENVY x360 13-ay0045au RAM question.
Record the full memory configuration
Before shopping, establish each of these for the exact model:

- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
- Whether memory is soldered, socketed, or a combination.
- How many sockets exist and how many are occupied.
- The supported memory type and form factor.
- The maximum supported capacity, including any limit on an individual module.
An operating system’s reported slot count is only a clue. It does not establish the supported memory type, maximum capacity, or whether soldered memory is also present. Verify those details against the manufacturer’s specifications, manual, and compatible-parts information. Lenovo likewise directs users to documentation and parts lookup rather than relying on slot count alone.
3. Check whether storage can be replaced or expanded
Look in the specifications, parts lookup, and manual for the installed storage drive and any documented replacement procedure. Verify whether the exact laptop supports a replaceable drive, its physical format, interface, supported capacity, and whether there is a second bay or slot. Lenovo lists storage drives among possible replaceable parts, but that does not establish the configuration of an arbitrary laptop: Lenovo: customer-replaceable and service parts.

Do not assume that every M.2-shaped connector supports every M.2 drive. Match the drive’s format and interface to what the manufacturer specifies for the exact model. A manual or parts listing that identifies a compatible drive is stronger evidence than a connector’s appearance.
4. Confirm a candidate part before buying
- Open the manufacturer’s parts lookup using the full model identifier, or the serial number, service tag, or machine type if the lookup requests it.
- Distinguish the parts installed in the laptop from optional compatible upgrades. Confirm that the listing applies to your precise configuration.
- Compare the candidate RAM’s type, form factor, capacity, and socket fit—or the drive’s format, interface, and capacity—with the specifications and manual.
- Keep the model identifier beside the part details when ordering; do not choose based only on a broad family name or operating-system slot report.
For a supported configuration with multiple options, compare only parts confirmed compatible with that model. Relevant differences include capacity, memory generation or storage interface, physical format, price, and installation complexity.

5. Check the installation procedure before opening the laptop
A part being replaceable does not necessarily mean it is intended as a simple self-service upgrade. Lenovo distinguishes self-service parts from optional-service parts that may require tools and technical skill. Read the procedure for your exact model, including its safety and disassembly instructions, before opening the case. If the manual classifies the part as optional-service or the procedure exceeds your experience, consider having a qualified technician install it.
