You can also take it to an Apple Store for an in-person assessment. An online estimate is not a guaranteed final credit: Apple inspects the phone and may change the value if its condition differs from your description.
Check online or ask for an in-store assessment
Apple offers two ways to check a device: answer the questions in its online Trade In flow or bring the iPhone to an Apple Store and ask a Specialist to assess it. The online route is convenient; a store visit lets Apple assess the phone in person. Neither an online estimate nor a store assessment should be treated as a guaranteed final value, because verification can affect the amount.
- Open Apple Trade In.
- Follow the prompts to identify the iPhone model and describe its condition. Answer for the phone you actually plan to trade in.
- Review the estimate shown. If you prefer an in-person assessment, take the iPhone to an Apple Store.
What affects eligibility and the estimate?
Apple bases its estimate on the model and the condition you report. Apple checks the device after receiving it; if its condition does not match your description, the amount may change. An in-store assessment can also differ from an online estimate. Apple does not publish a universal model cutoff or guarantee acceptance for every condition on the cited U.S. trade-in page, so check the current estimate flow for the specific phone rather than relying on a general list of eligible models.
Meet ownership and account requirements
Apple’s U.S. trade-in terms say the device must belong to the person trading it in, or that person must be authorized by the owner. The phone must not be subject to a lease or another third-party interest, and Find My must be removed. The vendor’s inspection can affect the quote. These are U.S. program terms; requirements may differ in other regions. Read the terms that apply to your transaction at Apple’s Trade-In terms.

Prepare the iPhone before sending it
Once you decide to proceed, follow Apple’s device preparation instructions. They direct owners to back up and erase the iPhone, review Parts and Service History, and finish any repair marked “Finish Repair” before trading it in. Apple’s U.S. Trade In page says the device should be received within 14 days of receiving the new device; treat that as a timing requirement for the relevant transaction, not an eligibility threshold, and check the terms for your order.
If Apple says the iPhone has no trade-in value
A no-value result does not mean you have to keep or discard the phone. Apple says it will recycle a device for free if it is not eligible for trade-in value. That option is Apple’s recycling fallback; it does not establish whether a carrier or another reseller will accept the iPhone.
