Use a current, genuine ID that both meets the rules where the alcohol is delivered or collected and is accepted by the retailer or delivery service. There is no universal list of documents for alcohol orders: requirements vary by location and service, so check the order instructions before checkout—especially if you plan to use an expired, temporary, digital, or out-of-area document.
How to check your ID before ordering alcohol
- Check the local age requirement and the order instructions. Look for the merchant’s requirements for delivery or pickup, including whether it requires government-issued ID or an ID scan. Rules and accepted documents can vary by location and service.
- Confirm that your specific document is accepted. Do not assume a document accepted by one store, country, state, or delivery app will be accepted by another. Contact the merchant or platform if its instructions do not cover your document.
- Check that the document is genuine and current. Be ready for the recipient’s photo and date of birth to be checked, and for the document’s authenticity and expiry date to matter. The exact checks depend on the service and location.
- Make sure the recipient can show the ID at handover or pickup. The person receiving the alcohol may need to complete the age check in person; placing the order online does not necessarily complete verification.
- Ask before relying on a digital or unusual ID. Confirm that the business accepts that particular credential. Digital ID acceptance is not universal, and temporary or out-of-area documents may require specific confirmation.
What happens when the ID check cannot be completed?
An order may not be handed over if the recipient’s age cannot be verified. In England and Wales, government guidance says appropriate steps should ensure verification before alcohol is handed over. DoorDash’s US terms require valid government-issued ID at delivery or pickup and say the recipient must not be intoxicated. Cancellation, return, and refund outcomes depend on the service’s terms and applicable local law; there is no single refund rule established for all alcohol orders.
Examples of rules that depend on location
England and Wales: physical and certified digital proof of age
Under the Home Office’s September 2026 section 182 guidance, the person serving or delivering alcohol remains responsible for ensuring an age check has taken place, including checking physical or digital ID. Licence holders should take appropriate measures for remote sales and ensure verification before handover. The mandatory age-verification policy described in the guidance applies to people who appear under 18; the physical-ID criteria include a photograph, date of birth, and a holographic mark or ultraviolet feature. From 15 September 2026, licensed premises in England and Wales may choose to accept certified digital proof of age alongside physical ID. Adoption is optional, so check with the particular business before relying on a digital credential. The change does not alter the legal drinking age. The government said 72% of consultation respondents supported using digital identities for age verification when buying alcohol; that figure describes consultation responses, not actual retailer adoption or the public as a whole. Age-estimation technology is not being allowed at this time as an alcohol age-verification route; certified digital identity is a distinct option. United States: DoorDash terms
DoorDash’s US terms require the alcohol recipient at delivery or pickup to provide valid government-issued ID proving the legal age applicable where the order is fulfilled. They also require the recipient not to be intoxicated, and alcohol availability depends on location. The terms do not settle every document edge case, such as temporary paper documents or particular tribal, territorial, or out-of-state credentials. Check the order instructions or contact the merchant or platform about your specific ID. This is a DoorDash example, not a complete statement of every US retailer’s obligations. Australia: DoorDash delivery guidance
DoorDash’s Australian delivery guidance lists examples of documents: an Australian state or territory driver licence, learner permit, Australian or foreign passport, or proof-of-age card. It instructs delivery workers to check the photo, date of birth, authenticity, and expiry. - Does local law permit it for alcohol age verification?
- Does this specific retailer or platform accept it?
- Is it current and unexpired?
- Can the recipient’s photograph and date of birth be checked?
- If it is digital, is it a certified credential that this business has chosen to accept?
These questions are a practical comparison framework, not a separate statutory checklist. If the business’s policy is unclear, verify before placing the order rather than relying on another service’s rules.
