Check four things in order: the account date of birth and adult/child status, family-manager or parental-control restrictions, purchase-approval and age-verification prompts, and the account country or region. An 18-year-old can still be blocked when the account is configured as a child account, a family manager has imposed a restriction, or the local storefront applies an additional verification rule.
Adults Only (AO) is the ESRB’s 18-and-over category. It is stricter than Mature 17+ and is used for content such as prolonged intense violence, graphic sexual content, or gambling with real currency. Use the checks below to determine whether your account is eligible, whether a family setting is stopping the transaction, or whether the platform simply does not sell AO games.
What an Adults Only rating means
The ESRB defines Adults Only 18+ as content suitable only for adults aged 18 or older. AO is a separate category from Mature 17+; being old enough for M-rated games does not automatically make an account eligible for AO content.

Nintendo’s rating guidance describes AO games as potentially containing “prolonged scenes of intense violence, graphic sexual content and/or gambling with real currency.” The rating describes the game’s content, not merely the buyer’s age. A store can therefore require both an age-eligible account and a permitted purchase flow.

The four checks that determine whether a purchase can go through
1. Confirm the date of birth and account type
The birth date stored on the platform account is normally separate from the age setting on the console. Confirm that it is accurate and that the profile is classified as an adult account rather than a child account. A person may be 18 in real life while the account remains subject to child-account rules because of an incorrect birth date or an unfinished account transition.
- Sign in to the account-management page associated with the platform.
- Review the saved date of birth and the displayed adult, child, or supervised status.
- Check whether the account belongs to a family group and identify the family manager.
- Do not create a second account with a different birth date to bypass a restriction; that can separate purchases, saves, subscriptions, and licenses from the account you actually use.
2. Check family and parental controls
Family controls can block a rating even when the account holder is old enough. They can also restrict spending, require a parent’s approval, or block one specific title. Review both the general game-rating level and any title-specific rule.
3. Separate play access from purchase approval
A platform may treat “allowed to play” and “allowed to buy” as different permissions. A family manager could permit a rating while still requiring approval for every purchase. Conversely, an approved purchase may remain unplayable if the profile’s content level is lower than the game’s rating.

4. Verify the signed-in storefront and region
Ratings, age checks, payment rules, and catalog availability can vary by country or region. Open the game’s store page while signed in to the account that will pay. Confirm the displayed rating, complete any age-verification prompt, and check that the payment or approval workflow is available in that region.
Platform-by-platform checks
PlayStation: inspect family role, rating level, and spending controls
ESRB’s PlayStation parental-control table maps AO to level 10, the highest restriction level in that table. A family-managed profile therefore needs a game-content level that permits level 10, and the family manager may still control spending or approvals separately.
- Open the PlayStation account settings for the profile attempting the purchase.
- Verify the date of birth associated with the PSN account and whether the profile is shown as an adult or child account.
- If it is a child profile, have the family manager review the profile’s game age level and spending controls.
- Check whether the family manager has required purchase approval, blocked the title, or set a spending limit that prevents the transaction.
- Return to the signed-in PlayStation Store page and read the displayed rating and any age-verification request before attempting payment again.
ESRB states that a child account can be upgraded to an adult account after the account holder reaches 18, based on the date of birth associated with the PSN account. If an account that should be adult is still treated as a child account, first verify the stored birth date and family role through PlayStation account settings. Changing a console’s local restriction level will not correct an account-level status problem.

Xbox and Microsoft: check Content restrictions and approval rules
Xbox family controls use the child’s age and rating information in the Allow Content Suitable for Age setting. A parent can also allow or block individual titles, so a game may remain unavailable even when the general age setting appears permissive.
- Open the child profile in Microsoft Family or the Xbox Family Settings app.
- Inspect Content restrictions and the Allow Content Suitable for Age setting.
- Look for an individual block on the game. A title-specific block takes precedence over a broad setting that otherwise appears to allow the rating.
- Review the adult account’s purchase-approval setting. Approval can be required even when the profile is allowed to view or play the content.
- Sign in to the relevant store page, confirm the rating and region, and complete the approval or age-verification step shown there.
If the adult account is not the family manager, the manager may need to change the restriction or approve the transaction. If the account’s age information is wrong, correct the account record through the account-management process rather than relying on the console’s local settings.
Nintendo: determine availability before changing controls
Nintendo’s policy is decisive for ESRB AO titles: “Please note that Nintendo does not sell or license games that carry the ESRB rating "AO" (Adults Only 18+).” If a game carries the ESRB AO rating, an account cannot buy it from Nintendo because the platform does not sell or license those games. No parental-control change can make an unavailable Nintendo catalog item purchasable.

For Nintendo games with other ESRB ratings, Nintendo Switch Parental Controls can restrict access by rating. Check the restriction level in the console or the parental-controls app, and confirm whether the account is part of a family group. These settings govern eligible content; they do not override Nintendo’s decision not to sell or license AO-rated games.
- Read the rating shown on the game’s Nintendo store page.
- If it is AO, stop there: Nintendo’s stated policy means the title is not sold or licensed by Nintendo.
- If it has another rating, review the Switch Parental Controls restriction level.
- Check the family-group relationship and whether a manager has imposed purchase or access limits.
- Use the signed-in store page to check regional availability and any verification prompt.
How to tell which restriction is causing the failure

Why being 18 may not be enough
Age eligibility has multiple layers. The platform can use the birth date in the account record, the account’s adult or child classification, the family manager’s controls, the store’s purchase-approval workflow, and the country or region of the storefront. These layers do not automatically update at the same time.

For example, an account holder who has just turned 18 may still see child restrictions until the platform recognizes the date of birth and completes the adult-account transition. A family manager can also continue to require approval or block a specific title. On another storefront, an adult account may pass the platform’s age test but fail to complete a regional verification step. Check each layer rather than assuming that the console’s displayed age setting is authoritative.

Storefront and region considerations
ESRB lists Microsoft Store/Xbox, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Google Play, and Oculus Store among storefronts using the IARC rating system. Retailers have implemented age verification for M and AO sales. The exact prompt and evidence requested can therefore differ by storefront and country.
- Use the store page for the country assigned to the account, not a listing from another region.
- Read the displayed rating on that page; a game’s classification can differ between rating systems or territories.
- Complete the age-verification prompt before troubleshooting payment details.
- Check whether a family manager must approve the transaction after verification.
- If the title is absent from the regional catalog, changing a local console setting will not add it.
Regional availability is a separate question from account age. An adult account can be eligible in principle while the specific store does not offer the game in that country.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing only the console’s local setting: account birth date and family status can still control the store transaction.
- Confusing M with AO: Mature 17+ permission does not prove that an account can buy Adults Only 18+ content.
- Assuming adult age removes every restriction: a family manager can require approval or block an individual title.
- Using a different region’s listing: the catalog and verification rules belong to the account’s storefront region.
- Treating Nintendo’s restriction as a technical error: Nintendo’s published policy is that it does not sell or license ESRB AO games.
- Ignoring the exact error wording: “approval required,” “content blocked,” and “not available in your region” point to different fixes.
