Search the exact itinerary you booked, then check the ticket rules with the airline or seller that issued it. A lower price means a cheaper fare is available now; it does not automatically lower the price of your existing ticket or entitle you to a refund.

How to check for a lower fare on your flight

  1. Identify the ticket you already have. Use your confirmation or the airline’s app to note the carrier, flight numbers, origin and destination, travel dates, passenger count, cabin, and fare conditions. Check whether you booked directly with the airline or through an online travel agency (OTA); the original seller may need to handle changes or refunds. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) explains that booking channel affects who you should contact.
  2. Search for the same flight. In Google Flights, search your itinerary, select the relevant flight or route, and turn on Track prices. Google says it may email you when prices change significantly. An alert is a reason to investigate, not a change to your ticket.
  3. Verify that the cheaper listing is comparable. Match the flight numbers, dates, passengers, cabin, and fare conditions. Compare the total price, including applicable taxes and mandatory surcharges, and check baggage and other included services. A lower headline price may be for a different fare or a less inclusive product. Google’s Price guarantee terms require an exact match for eligible itineraries, while DOT guidance requires advertised airfare to include applicable taxes and mandatory surcharges.
  4. Check the ticket’s options with its seller. Open the booking’s Manage booking, Change flight, or fare-rules page, or contact the airline or agent that sold it. Ask whether you can change to the lower fare and how any difference would be returned: cash, airline credit, or points. Also ask about fees, credit expiration and restrictions, and whether you must choose a different flight.
  5. Compare the net result before acting. Weigh any change or cancellation fees, fare difference, and credit-use restrictions against the savings. Do not cancel first: the new fare could disappear or change before you rebook. DOT notes that ticket prices can move quickly.

What a Google Flights price alert can—and cannot—tell you

Google Flights’ regular Track prices feature monitors selected flights, routes, and dates, and can email you about significant price changes. It helps you spot a lower public fare after purchase, but Google’s tracker instructions do not say that tracking reprices an existing ticket or triggers a refund.

Google describes a separate Price guarantee program for select itineraries that display its guarantee badge. It is not a general price-protection benefit for every tracked flight. Google’s terms specify that an eligible itinerary must be a one-way or round trip departing the United States, with Google set to the U.S. region and USD currency. The itinerary components—including airline, flight number, dates, passenger count, fare, cabin, and cancellation policy—must match. The program monitors the selected itinerary until the first flight departs. Under the stated terms, a price difference must exceed $5, the maximum payout is $500 per Google Account per calendar year, and payment is through Google Pay after the traveler confirms the booking. Changing or cancelling any part of the trip voids the difference. Check eligibility and terms when booking; a later price alert alone does not qualify an existing ticket.

When the U.S. 24-hour cancellation rule may help

For a qualifying airline booking made at least seven days before scheduled departure, DOT requires the airline to offer either cancellation within 24 hours for a full refund without penalty or a 24-hour hold at the quoted fare. Airlines are not required to offer both, and the rule does not require free changes. DOT says this airline requirement does not apply to bookings made through an OTA or travel agent; contact that seller about its terms. See DOT’s 24-hour reservation guidance for details.

If your booking falls within the rule, you can investigate cancelling and buying the lower fare, but confirm the applicable option and make sure the new fare is available before cancelling. This is a short cancellation or hold window—not an ongoing guarantee that the airline will refund a fare drop. The rule described here is U.S.-specific.

What happens after the 24-hour window?

There is no general DOT right to a refund simply because the same flight later costs less. The ticket’s fare rules, the airline’s policy, the route, and the booking channel determine whether a change is possible and what happens to the price difference. A lower fare may produce cash, credit, or points—or no recoverable difference—depending on those terms.

DOT notes in its Buying a Ticket guidance that, in some cases, requesting a refund and rebooking may cost less than paying a change fee and the fare difference. Compare the total cost before deciding, because the replacement price can change quickly. This voluntary fare-drop situation differs from a covered cancellation or significant schedule change: U.S. rules require a refund in certain such cases when the customer does not accept the alternative.

Airline policies can produce different results

These examples illustrate why you should verify the exact ticket’s current rules rather than assume every airline returns a fare difference in the same way.

Southwest

Southwest’s Lower Fare Refund Options describe changing a reservation or cancelling and rebooking. For nonrefundable fares, the difference is returned as flight credit or Transferable Flight Credit, depending on the fare purchased. For reward travel, a decrease returns the difference in Rapid Rewards points to the original account. Southwest also states that flight credit associated with Basic fares expires after six months. Confirm the terms for your fare and booking.

Delta

Delta’s change and cancellation information makes outcomes dependent on ticket and itinerary conditions; fees and fare differences may apply. Its Low Fare Commitment page describes risk-free cancellation during the first 24 hours, not a general adjustment whenever a fare drops.
