To check whether your apps and files will work, start with the Chromebook’s exact model, then verify each app, file format, offline need, and connected device on that model. “Googlebook” is not Google’s official device name: Google calls these computers Chromebooks and their operating system ChromeOS. Support varies by model, app, setup, and any work or school restrictions, so no single compatibility list guarantees everything will work.

How to check compatibility on your Chromebook

  1. Find the exact model. Check the device’s label, packaging, or ChromeOS settings. Use the full model name when checking Google’s current support information and the app’s own requirements. Features vary across Chromebook models; a work or school administrator may also restrict features that the hardware supports.
  2. Check how the app runs. Determine whether it is a website, an Android app, or a Linux application, and compare its specific requirements with the Chromebook. A web app runs through Chrome. Android and Linux availability must be checked on the device and may also be limited by administrator policy.
  3. Check the files and the work you need to do with them. Note each file extension, and for media, the relevant codec as well. Confirm not only that ChromeOS can open the file, but that the app supports the editing, embedded content, or formatting you rely on.
  4. Check offline use, storage, and accounts. Identify which files and apps must work without internet, whether they need cloud storage or a sign-in, and whether the Chromebook has enough local storage for your workflow.
  5. Check external devices. Confirm the device’s filesystem, connector, and Chromebook port fit. A listed filesystem alone does not guarantee a particular drive, cable, or peripheral will work.
  6. Test your important workflow on the exact Chromebook. Open the app, edit a representative file, inspect formatting and embedded content, connect the drive or peripheral, and try the same work offline if that matters.

Will my apps work on a Chromebook?

Web apps

Web apps run through Chrome, but their own system, browser, account, or connectivity requirements still apply. Check the app provider’s requirements rather than assuming that every website or feature works identically to its desktop counterpart.

Android apps and the Play Store

Google says, “Currently, the Google Play Store is available for only some Chromebooks.” On the device, look in Settings > Apps for Google Play preferences. If that option is absent, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. If it is present, that does not guarantee that a particular app is available or compatible: Google also notes that some apps do not work with some Chromebooks. Check the app’s availability and requirements for the exact model, and account for any work or school policy that may block Play Store access.

Linux apps and development tools

Linux is an optional feature for supported Chromebooks, aimed at development and Linux applications—not a general way to run conventional Windows or macOS desktop programs. Check Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers for Linux development environment. It is off by default and an administrator can prohibit it. Before relying on Linux software, confirm that the Chromebook supports the Linux features that software needs; Linux has documented feature limits.

Can I open my files on a Chromebook?

ChromeOS supports many common document, media, image, archive, text, and PDF formats, but an extension by itself does not establish that every codec, embedded object, or editing feature will work. Google’s supported-file list includes the following examples:

File type Examples Google lists Important qualification
Microsoft Office documents and spreadsheets .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx Opening and editing depend on the app and setup; see the Office options below.
PowerPoint presentations .ppt, .pptx Google lists these as read-only in its general file-type list.
Media .3gp, .mov, .m4v, .m4a, .mp3, .mkv, .ogm, .ogg, .oga, .webm, .wav Check the exact codec and workflow. Google says AMR, GSM, AVI, and MPEG4 are no longer supported.
Images .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp Image support does not guarantee that every app’s editing features are available.
Archives, text, and PDF .zip, .rar, .txt, .pdf Check whether your particular archive contents or document workflow needs additional software or services.

These examples are not a guarantee that every file with a listed extension will behave as expected. For media, check the specific codec; for documents, test the formatting and features you need.

Can I use Microsoft Office on a Chromebook?

Google documents two approaches to Microsoft Office files. Each has setup and workflow limitations, so test the files and editing tasks that matter to you.

Microsoft 365 with OneDrive

Google’s documented Microsoft 365 setup connects the Chromebook’s Files app to OneDrive. OneDrive is required to edit files through this workflow. Google says Office files opened through the documented Microsoft 365 and Google-app workflows cannot be opened this way while the Chromebook is offline.

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides with Google Drive

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides can open Microsoft files by moving them to Google Drive. Google says this workflow also cannot open those files while the Chromebook is offline. A basic editor may be available with limited functionality, so check whether it covers the tasks you need before depending on it.

Can I use a USB drive or other external device?

Google lists support for FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and MTP, as well as some read-only formats. This is filesystem guidance, not a guarantee for every external drive or peripheral; Google warns that a Chromebook might not support the external storage device you are trying to use. Check the target model’s ports and the device’s connector, then try the actual device before relying on it.

Can I use my Chromebook offline?

Some Google Drive files can be marked available offline. Chromebook Plus also has a My Drive sync setting, subject to available storage. Offline access does not cover every Drive file type or app, and the documented Microsoft 365/Google-app workflows for Office files cannot open those files while the Chromebook is offline. Identify the exact files and apps you need, prepare them in advance, and test the workflow with the Chromebook disconnected from the internet.
