Start in Windows Security > Protection history. Expand any recent event that matches the app or file to see what Windows did and which actions are available. If there is no matching event, check the control that fits the symptom: SmartScreen or Smart App Control for a warning when opening or downloading, Controlled folder access for a save failure, or Firewall for a connection problem.

Check Protection history for a recent event

  1. Open Start, search for Windows Security, and open the app.
  2. Select Protection history.
  3. Expand cards from around the time the problem began. Look for the app or file name and read the event and available actions before changing anything.

Microsoft says Protection history retains events for two weeks; older events disappear from the list. Administrator privileges are required to view threat details. A missing event therefore does not prove that Windows, an organization policy, or another security product did not block something. Microsoft’s Protection history guide explains the screen and event actions.

  • Threat found – action needed: Defender detected a possible threat and is waiting for a decision. Quarantine it if you are unsure. Allow it only if you have verified that the detection is mistaken and the file is trustworthy.
  • Threat quarantined: The item has been isolated. You may be offered removal or restoration. Restoring it can lead to another detection; a separate allow action may be available if you are confident the item is safe.
  • Threat blocked: Defender blocked and removed the threat. Allowing it applies to a future occurrence, so you may need to obtain the file again.
  • Remediation incomplete: Defender did not finish cleaning the item. Expand the event and follow the additional steps it shows.
  • This app has been blocked: Microsoft identifies SmartScreen as one possible source of this kind of event; check App & browser control as well.

Red events indicate serious items requiring immediate attention; yellow events are not urgent but should be checked, according to Microsoft’s Protection history guidance.

Match the Windows control to the symptom

“Windows Defender blocked it” can describe several different controls. Antivirus may detect or quarantine a file, while reputation checks may warn about an app or download. Other controls restrict changes to protected folders or network traffic. Use the symptom and the wording of the alert to choose the next check.

A download or app-opening warning

Open Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection and review the relevant SmartScreen settings. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen can warn about or block unsafe apps, files, websites, and downloads. See Microsoft’s App & browser control guide.

A Smart App Control warning in Windows 11

Smart App Control is a separate Windows 11 feature. Microsoft says it uses cloud-powered intelligence and, when it cannot confidently assess an app, checks whether the app has a valid signature. Microsoft currently documents no way to bypass Smart App Control for one individual app; if the warning concerns trusted software, contact its developer about obtaining a valid signature. Details are in Microsoft’s Smart App Control FAQ.

The app opens but cannot save to a protected folder

Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage ransomware protection > Controlled folder access. This feature can block an untrusted app from changing files in protected folders; it is different from antivirus quarantine. Note the blocked app’s path, then use the alert or Add an allowed app flow to browse to it if you trust it. Trying to save to a different location can help determine whether protected-folder access is the problem. Allowing an app gives it access to protected files, so do not add software you cannot verify. Microsoft’s Virus & threat protection guide covers Controlled folder access.

The app cannot connect to a network

Go to Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall. Firewall controls network communication; a connection failure alone is not evidence that Antivirus blocked the app’s file. Microsoft recommends allowing a needed app rather than turning Firewall off, and says allowing an app is generally safer than opening a port. Do not allow an app you do not recognize. An organization may prevent you from changing this setting. See Microsoft’s Firewall app-allowing guidance and Firewall and network protection guide.

Scan the file and check which antivirus is active

If the file is still on the device, open File Explorer, right-click it, and select Scan with Microsoft Defender. On Windows 11, you may need to select Show more options first. This checks the file; it does not establish why an app failed to open, save, or connect.

To see which security provider is protecting the device, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers. If another antivirus product is installed, Microsoft Defender Antivirus may be disabled automatically, so its status may not match what you expected. Microsoft describes these checks in Stay protected with the Windows Security app.

Decide whether to allow the item

Do not use an allow action as a test of whether a file is safe. Microsoft warns that allowing a threat can expose your device and data if the item is malicious. If you cannot verify it, leave it quarantined and ask the software publisher or device administrator for help.

If you believe a detection is a false positive, confirm that the file came from the publisher’s official source and verify the publisher or signature where available before considering an exception. You can report a suspected false positive through Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance. Avoid disabling real-time protection or adding a broad folder exclusion just to see whether an app works: exclusions mean Defender Antivirus no longer checks the selected items during real-time scanning, which can leave the device vulnerable. Microsoft explains exclusions in its Virus & threat protection guide.

What a missing alert can and cannot tell you

Windows 10 and Windows 11 use Windows Security, though labels and screens can change with updates. Smart App Control is documented for Windows 11. Protection history is time-limited, threat details require administrator access, and a third-party antivirus or organization-managed setting can affect what you see or can change. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that Protection history records every policy decision or every event from third-party security software, so check the specific control tied to the failure rather than treating an empty history as proof no block occurred.
