That field reports the VM’s setting; by itself, it does not prove that AMD-V is available to a running VirtualBox hypervisor on the host.
Check the VM’s hardware-virtualization setting
AMD-V is AMD’s name for its processor hardware-virtualization technology; Intel’s counterpart is VT-x. In VirtualBox, select the VM you want to check and inspect its information or details for the Hardware Virtualization field. See Oracle’s VirtualBox Technical Background documentation for its explanation of hardware virtualization.
You can also check from a terminal with VBoxManage:
- Open a terminal or command prompt where
VBoxManageis available. - Run
VBoxManage showvminfo "VM name" --details, replacingVM namewith the VM’s name. Keep the quotation marks if the name contains spaces. - Find Hardware Virtualization in the human-readable output.
onmeans the VM’s hardware-virtualization setting is enabled.
Oracle’s VBoxManage implementation identifies this field with the machine-readable property hwvirtex. The output describes the VM’s setting, not a universal live check of whether the host has made AMD-V available to VirtualBox. See the VBoxManage information implementation.

Understand what the result does—and does not—show
A result of Hardware Virtualization: on tells you that hardware virtualization is enabled in that VM’s VirtualBox configuration. It does not, on its own, establish that the host’s processor feature is enabled in firmware or available to the hypervisor at runtime.
VirtualBox treats hardware virtualization, Nested Paging, and the paravirtualization provider as separate VM information fields. Nested Paging is a distinct hardware-assisted memory feature, while the paravirtualization provider supplies a guest-facing interface; neither is the AMD-V status field. Checking either one instead of Hardware Virtualization will not answer whether that VM’s hardware-virtualization setting is on. Oracle lists these as distinct properties in its VBoxManage implementation.

If hardware virtualization is unavailable
If the VM cannot use hardware virtualization, check whether virtualization is enabled in the host’s BIOS or UEFI firmware. Oracle notes that “On many systems, the hardware virtualization features first need to be enabled in the BIOS before Oracle VM VirtualBox can use them.” Firmware menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and system, so there is no single BIOS/UEFI path that applies to every computer. Consult the documentation for your computer or motherboard for the relevant setting. VirtualBox also documents hardware virtualization as required for 64-bit guests and multiprocessing support in its Technical Background chapter.
