To check whether hidden text may be influencing an AI writing tool, inspect the original file for content that is hidden or absent from its normal view, then run a controlled comparison with a harmless copy—with and without the suspicious content. A change in the result is a clue that the content may matter in that setup, not proof of what the AI processed or why. No single visual or software check can prove a document is free of hidden instructions.
Why hidden text can affect an AI writing tool
Prompt injection is an attempt to use content supplied to an AI—such as text in a document, webpage, or email—to redirect its behavior. Content may be readable by a language model even when it is not visible in the ordinary document view. OWASP describes hidden, invisible, and encoded instructions as possible forms of this risk in its LLM01: Prompt Injection guidance and prevention cheat sheet.
That possibility does not establish that a particular writing app read or followed hidden text. The app may extract a file differently from how it renders a preview, and its internal processing is generally not visible to you. Treat inspection as a way to find suspicious material and a controlled test as a way to look for a behavioral change—not as a forensic account of the model’s internals.
Check a Word document for hidden or unexpected content
1. Preserve the original
Make a separate copy before editing, removing content, or changing formatting. Microsoft’s guidance warns that removed material may not be recoverable with Undo, so keep the untouched original available for comparison.

2. Reveal text formatted as hidden
In Word desktop for Windows, use File > Options > Display and enable the display of hidden text. Inspect the document with that setting on. This reveals text explicitly formatted as hidden; it is not a general scan for every way content can be concealed.
3. Run Document Inspector and review its findings
In Word desktop, go to File > Info > Check for Issues > Inspect Document. Review the categories and findings before choosing any removal action. Depending on the file, the inspection can cover hidden-formatted text, comments and revisions, document properties, headers and footers, and some invisible objects. Microsoft’s Document Inspector guidance states: “This Inspector cannot detect text that was hidden by other methods (for example, white text on a white background).” It also warns that objects covered by other objects may escape detection.

4. Account for Word edition differences
Microsoft’s current support guidance says Word for Mac does not have Document Inspector and directs Mac users to inspect or change properties manually. Do not assume that the Mac app has the same inspection controls as Word desktop for Windows. Microsoft’s separate Inspect document page describes the feature and its workflow.
5. Review content beyond the main page
Inspect comments, tracked changes, headers, footers, watermarks, document properties, text boxes, drawings, and other objects—not only the text in the body. Look for suspicious instructions, unexpected text, or material that differs from what you thought you supplied. Microsoft’s guidance on additional information and hidden content may also be relevant when examining signed content.

Compare what you see with what the writing tool receives
If the AI app accepts an uploaded file, inspect the source document as well as the app’s rendered preview. If the app provides extracted text or a plain-text view, compare it with the visible document. Unexpected differences are a reason to investigate, but they do not by themselves prove malicious intent or show exactly what the model used.
Document inspection has specific limits: for example, Word’s Document Inspector checks certain categories and can miss white-on-white text or covered objects. Other applications may extract or display files differently. A clean result from one check means only that the check did not find what it was designed to detect; it cannot prove that no concealed content was supplied.

Test whether suspicious content changes the result
- Use a non-sensitive copy. Do not use confidential material for an experiment. Preserve the original file separately.
- Prepare two versions. Keep one version unchanged and make another with the suspicious text removed or neutralized. Change nothing else if possible.
- Run the same task in the same tool. Keep the prompt, settings, and other inputs as constant as possible. Compare the outputs for a repeatable difference.
- Interpret the result narrowly. A reproducible change suggests the suspicious material may affect output in that setup. It does not reveal the provider’s private system instructions, establish exactly what content was processed, or prove the internal cause.
Limit what an AI assistant can do with your material
When an assistant can take actions beyond drafting text, reduce the impact of any instruction embedded in source material. OpenAI recommends limiting an agent to the access it needs, using specific instructions rather than broad requests, and reviewing consequential actions before confirming them in its prompt-injection guidance. Do not let a writing assistant send, publish, or share material just because an instruction to do so appeared in a document.
Prompt injection remains an ongoing security challenge, not a risk that one inspection step eliminates. Anthropic’s November 24, 2025 article on mitigating prompt injections in browser use discusses hidden white-text instructions in email as an example. For organizations using Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 2, Microsoft documents prompt-injection detection for inbound email before it reaches a user or AI assistant; that is an email-security capability, not a universal scanner for documents or consumer writing apps.
