To check whether a gold or silver quote is live, look for an explicit feed-status label, note its timestamp and timezone, and confirm exactly what price it represents. A timestamp by itself does not prove a feed is real time: it may mark when a page refreshed, not when the underlying market data was generated.
Check the quote in six steps
- Read the feed-status label. Look near the price for “real time,” “delayed,” or a specific delay, such as “at least 10 minutes.” Also note if the page calls the figure a settlement price or benchmark.
- Find the timestamp. Look for “Last Updated” or a time beside the quote, and check which timezone it uses. Treat the timestamp as a clue: it does not independently verify that the underlying data is live.
- Identify the price type. Determine whether you are seeing a spot quote, a particular futures contract, an LBMA auction benchmark, or a settlement value. These are different measures and should not be compared as if they were the same instrument.
- Check the relevant schedule and calendar. A scheduled benchmark does not update continuously. Check whether its auction has taken place and whether the market is open; LBMA says its Precious Metal Prices are not published on weekends or UK bank holidays.
- Compare like with like. Match the instrument, units, currency and timestamp. LBMA describes its gold and silver benchmarks in US dollars per troy ounce, so a local-currency display may differ without being delayed.
- Verify against a source that states its data status. If a page does not disclose whether its quote is live or delayed, treat freshness as unverified. A familiar provider, current-looking number or frequently changing display is not proof.
Understand what kind of price you are viewing
Spot and futures quotes
Spot and futures prices are market quotes, but they refer to different instruments. A futures quote relates to a contract with a particular delivery month; an LBMA auction benchmark is a scheduled reference price. Check the page label before comparing values.
LBMA auction benchmarks
The LBMA Gold Price is set at 10:30 and 15:00 London time, and the LBMA Silver Price is set at noon London time. These are auction benchmarks, not continuously updating spot quotes. The LBMA says its public website publishes daily auction prices with a delay until midnight London time on the day they are set. LBMA explains its daily auction-price publication; its precious-metal prices page gives the benchmark schedules and calendar information.
Faster LBMA benchmark data is available through ICE Benchmark Administration and market-data redistributors, subject to applicable access and licensing arrangements. ICE IBA describes intraday availability four hours after original publication and delayed availability at midnight London time for these benchmarks; those timings apply to LBMA Gold and Silver benchmark data, not to every metals quote. Settlement values
A settlement price is a calculated reference value with its own publication schedule, not necessarily a live quote. CME says settlement datasets can be delivered at midnight, 10 minutes after publication on MDP, or two hours after publication, depending on the dataset and product tier. Its settlement-data FAQ also says CME delayed data is published 10 minutes after the values are first disseminated through its real-time market-data feed.
Use provider disclosures, not assumptions
CME’s public Gold Futures page is a useful example of a direct disclosure: it says the market data is delayed by at least 10 minutes and shows a “Last Updated” time. That delay is specific to the page and its data; it should not be applied to other products, brokers or websites. Check the page’s current label and timestamp at CME Gold Futures Overview.

For an LBMA benchmark, a price that appears unchanged between updates may simply be waiting for its next scheduled auction or for publication under the website’s delay policy. The LBMA Silver Price auction takes place at noon UK time each working day, according to the LBMA Silver Price FAQ.

What “last updated” can—and cannot—tell you
- It tells you when the page says it refreshed or updated its display.
- It does not, on its own, say whether the underlying feed is live, delayed, or a scheduled benchmark.
- A timezone helps you compare the displayed time with an auction or market schedule, but it still does not certify the feed status.
- If the data-status label is missing, you cannot establish freshness from the timestamp alone. Treat the quote as unverified until the provider states its status.
Compare quote sources consistently
