Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo check whether FFmpeg is using the right YouTube stream key, select the intended stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, compare its current stream URL and key with FFmpeg’s configured destination and credentials, then start FFmpeg and confirm that the incoming preview appears on that same stream. The preview confirms that YouTube is receiving a feed; comparing the configuration is how you check which key FFmpeg is set to use.
Check the stream key and destination in YouTube Studio
- Open the intended stream. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go live and select the scheduled stream or stream configuration you want FFmpeg to publish to. Confirm its identity before copying credentials. Reusing settings can carry over a previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key, so do not assume the currently selected stream is the right one. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings and its encoder setup instructions.
- Compare the server URL. In the selected stream’s settings, find the stream URL or server address. Compare it with the destination configured for FFmpeg. YouTube may label this an RTMP server; use the URL shown for this stream and protocol, not an address copied from an old command or another scheduled stream.
- Compare the current key. Copy the key displayed for the selected stream and compare it with the key in FFmpeg’s configuration. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in public logs, screenshots, shell history, or support posts. The key may be hidden in the interface, so take care not to reveal it while checking.
The important check is that both values—the server URL and the stream key—belong to the stream you mean to use. A matching key alone is not enough if FFmpeg is pointed at a different destination.
Confirm that YouTube receives FFmpeg’s feed
- With the intended stream still selected, start FFmpeg using its existing configuration.
- Wait for the incoming feed to appear in that stream’s Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled event, check the preview before selecting Go live.
- If the preview appears, YouTube is receiving media on the selected stream. That is useful confirmation of the destination, but it does not display or independently prove the literal hidden key value. Use the configuration comparison above to verify which key FFmpeg is set to send.
YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting an event. Its streaming tips cover testing and preview checks.
If the key may be stale, reset, or exposed
If you reset a key, the old value is no longer the one to rely on: copy the current key from the selected stream’s Live Control Room settings and update FFmpeg’s configuration before retrying. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance also recommends copying the key from Live Control Room into the encoder when addressing encoder startup errors.

Check protocol-specific settings
RTMP or RTMPS
Make sure FFmpeg’s destination matches the URL YouTube provides for the selected protocol. If you are configuring RTMPS, YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL instead. If an RTMPS connection fails, YouTube’s guidance identifies port 443 as a troubleshooting setting when needed. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting instructions.

HLS
For an HLS workflow, use the HTTPS ingestion URL shown for HLS and confirm that the encoder supports HLS and is configured for the HLS stream key. The URL and encoder compatibility differ from an RTMP/RTMPS setup; the basic verification still applies: select the intended stream, compare its current key and protocol-specific URL with FFmpeg’s configuration, then check the preview. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
Troubleshoot a missing preview or startup error
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports a startup error | Whether the configured key is the current key for the selected stream. | Copy that stream’s current key from Live Control Room, update FFmpeg’s configuration, and retry. |
| No incoming preview appears | The selected stream, configured server URL, configured key, FFmpeg output, and outbound connection. | Recheck the stream identity and both configured values. Inspect FFmpeg’s output and the outbound connection; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the encoded stream’s look and sound. |
| RTMPS SSL or connection problem | Whether the destination is the RTMPS URL rather than the ordinary RTMP URL. | Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from YouTube. YouTube lists port 443 as a troubleshooting setting when needed. |
| HLS connection or compatibility problem | Whether the encoder supports HLS and the configuration uses the HLS key and HTTPS ingestion URL. | Use the HLS-specific URL and key shown for the selected stream, and confirm encoder compatibility. |
| The key may have been exposed | Whether the current key could still be accessed by someone else. | Reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the old key wherever FFmpeg is configured. |
YouTube’s troubleshooting guide distinguishes encoder-side issues from outbound internet problems. The YouTube guidance cited here covers the YouTube setup and troubleshooting side; it does not establish a particular FFmpeg command-line syntax. Check your own FFmpeg output and configuration rather than assuming a specific flag or command.
