To find out whether drinking water contains radioactive material, check evidence for the specific water source or product: use your U.S. public water supplier’s Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) for municipal tap water, and ask the manufacturer for laboratory results for a bottled product. “Radioactive ingredients” is not usually a useful label category. Uranium, radium, and radon can occur naturally in source water, so a meaningful answer depends on what was tested, where the sample came from, and which radionuclides the analysis covered.
Start with the type of water you want to check
U.S. municipal tap water
Find your water supplier’s Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), which reports information about public drinking water. EPA recommends these reports as a way to stay informed. If the CCR does not answer a question about radionuclides, contact the utility or your state drinking-water authority and ask about monitoring for the relevant contaminants. EPA Consumer Confidence Reports
Private wells and packaged water
Do not assume that a public water-system report covers a private well or a particular bottled or packaged product. Ask the product manufacturer for relevant laboratory results. For a private well or independent check, contact an environmental laboratory and ask whether it can test the water for the radionuclides of concern.
Ask for evidence that matches the water in question
A result is useful only if its sample scope and analyte coverage fit your question. For a packaged product, ask for documentation identifying the product and, if applicable, its production lot, the sample date, radionuclides measured, units, analytical method, and reporting or detection limits. These are practical details to request; they are not presented as required label fields.

Check whether the result is for the exact product or lot you have, rather than a general source, public water system, or different sample. A system-wide compliance record or a monitoring result from another location does not by itself establish what is in a particular retail bottle.
Understand what an analysis does—and does not—show
Screening is not the same as identifying every radionuclide
Gross alpha and gross beta measurements can serve as screening analyses. If a result warrants further investigation, radionuclide-specific follow-up may be needed. Different radionuclides require suitable analytical methods, so ask the laboratory which analytes its test covers and whether follow-up is appropriate.

EPA RadNet is surveillance, not a product certificate
EPA’s RadNet water program collects drinking-water samples quarterly and uses screening and follow-up analyses. Its monitoring is intended for surveillance and emergency-response purposes; it is not a test certificate for an individual bottled-water product or retail lot. EPA describes routine analyses that include tritium in each quarterly sample, iodine-131 once per station annually, and annual composite screening. Elevated results may lead to radionuclide-specific follow-up. These details describe RadNet’s monitoring design, not a guarantee that every sample is tested for every radionuclide listed. EPA RadNet drinking-water testing FAQ
Consumer gadgets and general water kits have limits
Do not treat a generic home meter, filter, or water-testing kit as proof that water does or does not contain radionuclides unless its capability for the relevant radionuclide has been verified. EPA publishes approved analytical methods for drinking-water radionuclide analysis; ask an environmental laboratory about its methods and sample-collection instructions. Interpret results against the right U.S. standards
EPA’s radionuclide limits below apply to regulated U.S. drinking-water systems. They are not interchangeable measures of one generic “radiation level,” and they do not certify a particular retail product, guarantee zero radioactivity, or automatically apply in another jurisdiction.
| Measure | U.S. federal standard | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Combined radium-226 and radium-228 | 5 pCi/L | A combined limit for these two radionuclides. |
| Gross alpha | 15 pCi/L, subject to specified exclusions | A screening measure with exclusions; do not treat it as a measurement of every radionuclide. |
| Beta particles and photon emitters | 4 mrem/year | A different measure and unit from pCi/L limits. |
| Uranium | 30 µg/L | A mass concentration limit, not a pCi/L value. |
These are the EPA Radionuclides Rule values. Compare a test result only with a standard that matches its analyte, units, and regulatory scope. EPA Radionuclides Rule EPA radionuclides rule overview

What to do if a result raises concern
- For public water, ask the supplier to explain the result and contact the state drinking-water authority if questions remain.
- For a packaged product, request results tied to the product or lot and ask what the laboratory measured, by which method, and at what reporting limit.
- If further testing is needed, ask a qualified environmental laboratory about radionuclide-specific analysis and how to collect and submit a sample.
- During a radiological incident, follow public-health and emergency instructions rather than relying on a consumer gadget or routine monitoring page. EPA addresses protective response guidance separately from routine compliance and monitoring. EPA radiological emergency response guidance
