Check the Active ingredients list in the Drug Facts panel on each package—not the brand name or front-panel claims. Compare every ingredient, then check its amount, uses, directions, age limits, and warnings. If the same ingredient appears in both products, do not assume it is safe to take them together; ask a pharmacist or health care professional.

Compare the Drug Facts panels

  1. Find the Drug Facts panel on each U.S. over-the-counter package.
  2. Read the full Active ingredients section on both labels. Combination cold and flu products can contain several active ingredients, and an ingredient in one product may also appear in a separate pain reliever or fever reducer.
  3. Compare ingredient names one by one. Products with different brand names or front-panel symptom claims may still share an ingredient; products in the same category may have different formulas. Do not rely on the product name or the front of the package to determine what is inside.
  4. Compare the rest of the label: the amount per labeled unit, Uses, Directions, age limits, and Warnings. These details help you understand what each product is labeled to treat and who it is for; they do not establish that the medicines are interchangeable.

FDA advises reading OTC medicine labels and choosing a product for only the symptoms the person has. Do not infer a dose or whether a combination is suitable from an ingredient comparison alone. FDA’s OTC medicine label guidance

What to do if an ingredient appears in both

Do not assume that taking both products is safe. FDA advises avoiding multiple OTC medicines with the same active ingredient, or asking a pharmacist or health care professional for guidance. This matters because combination cold and flu medicines can overlap with other products people use for pain or fever.

Check carefully for acetaminophen

Acetaminophen is a key ingredient to look for across all medicines being considered. FDA warns against taking more than one OTC medicine containing acetaminophen: too much can cause severe liver damage. Keep track of acetaminophen across medicines, and ask a health professional if you have questions. FDA notes that prescription labels may use shortened forms such as “APAP”; if you encounter an unfamiliar abbreviation, ask a professional rather than guessing. FDA: Don’t Overuse Acetaminophen

When the label or combination is unclear

  • Show a pharmacist both packages, including the full Drug Facts panels.
  • Share the person’s complete medication list, including prescription medicines and other OTC products.
  • Ask whether the products are appropriate for that person, considering their symptoms, age, medical conditions, and other medicines.

This is general U.S. label-reading guidance, not a personalized decision about whether two specific medicines can be taken together. FDA’s advice is apt: “When in doubt, reach out to our pharmacists.”
