Before adding money, identify the app’s contracting supplier and GSTIN, then verify that GSTIN with the official GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer utility. Enter the number and captcha without logging in, and compare the returned legal name, trade name, registration date, constitution, status, taxpayer type, principal place of business, business activities and return-filing information with the app’s invoice and terms.
A matching, active GSTIN supports the supplier’s tax-identity claim. It is not a gaming licence and does not prove that the app is authorised, financially sound, fair, or required to pay winnings. Those are separate checks under India’s current online-gaming framework and under the app’s own KYC, withdrawal, grievance and data-handling terms.
What GST verification can—and cannot—tell you
GST registration identifies a supplier for tax purposes. It lets you test whether the entity named by an app is real, whether its registration is active, and whether the tax document is consistent with that identity. The GST Portal describes its Search Taxpayer function as a way to verify a GSTIN and avoid fraudulent numbers.
It does not certify the game itself. A valid GSTIN does not establish that a particular game is permitted, that the operator will honour withdrawals, that player funds are segregated, that randomisation is fair, or that the service is available in every Indian state. Tax administration and gaming regulation are separate systems, so a safe decision requires both checks.

How online gaming GST rules apply
The Goods and Services Tax Council recorded a policy decision in 2023 to apply 28% GST on the full face value of bets placed, without distinguishing games of skill from games of chance. That is a tax treatment, not a declaration that every app is lawful.
| Event | What it establishes | How to use it when checking an app |
|---|---|---|
| GST Council decision, 2023 | Online gaming was to be taxed at 28% on the full face value, with no skill-versus-chance distinction. | Do not assume a game is outside the rule merely because the operator calls it skill-based. |
| 1 October 2023 | Government Gazette Notification 49/2023-Central Tax brought the notified valuation treatment into force. | For transactions represented as registered supplies after this date, inspect the supplier and tax treatment on the invoice. |
| Government release, 2023 | The release records the 28% recommendation and a registration/liability framework for online-money-gaming suppliers located outside India. | Foreign operators should disclose the Indian registration or representative information applicable to their supplies. |
| MeitY index, 2025–2026 | The official index lists the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 and April 2026 rules, authority and enforcement notifications. | Use the current MeitY material as a separate gaming-law check; a GSTIN cannot substitute for it. |
The tax line shown at checkout should be consistent with the applicable supply and the invoice issued by the contracting supplier. A badge saying “GST included” without a named supplier, GSTIN and traceable tax document is not enough evidence.
Step 1: identify the entity that is actually selling to you
A brand name on an app screen may not be the legal supplier. The supplier could be a company or limited liability partnership behind the brand, while a payment gateway, app-store publisher or marketing partner appears elsewhere in the flow. Record the entity that accepts your money and issues the tax document.

- Full legal name shown in the invoice, receipt, terms or help centre.
- Trade name, if it differs from the legal name.
- Company or LLP details and registered address.
- GSTIN, exactly as displayed, including every character.
- Country of incorporation and any Indian representative or registration disclosed for an offshore operator.
- Support email, grievance contact and the entity named in withdrawal terms.
Save screenshots or a PDF of the relevant page. If the app refuses to identify its contracting supplier, stop the check there; you cannot meaningfully verify a GST claim without an entity and number to compare.
Step 2: verify the GSTIN on the official GST Portal
The public Search Taxpayer utility is designed for this check and does not require a login. Use the GST Portal, choose Search Taxpayer, select the GSTIN/UIN search, enter the number, complete the captcha and submit.

- Open the GST Portal directly rather than using a link supplied in a promotional message.
- Choose Search Taxpayer from the public services area.
- Enter the app’s GSTIN/UIN exactly as printed on its invoice or terms.
- Complete the captcha and submit the query.
- Save the result page with the date and time of your check.
- Compare every returned field with the supplier information collected in Step 1.
The result is useful only if you compare the details, not merely if a page appears. A number that returns a record belonging to another business is a failed identity match even when the number itself is formatted correctly.
Step 3: read every field returned by Search Taxpayer
Use the portal’s returned record as a checklist. The following fields have distinct purposes and should be assessed together.

| Legal name | Matches the contracting supplier named on the invoice or terms, or the app clearly explains the relationship. | A different company, an individual unrelated to the operator, or no explanation for the mismatch. |
| Trade name | Corresponds to the app or brand name disclosed in its legal pages. | The brand is absent and support cannot explain who operates it. |
| Effective registration date | Predates a transaction for which the app represents itself as a registered supplier. | The date is later than the transaction or the app makes an unexplained claim of long-standing registration. |
| Constitution of business | Fits the company or LLP identity stated in the app’s terms. | The legal form conflicts with the entity described to customers. |
| Status | Active at the time you check. | Cancelled, suspended or otherwise inactive. |
| Taxpayer type | Consistent with the supplier’s stated registration and the type of supply. | It does not make sense for the entity or the app will not explain it. |
| Principal place of business | Matches, or can reasonably be reconciled with, the address in the legal terms or invoice. | An unrelated address, a location the operator denies, or no address at all. |
| Nature of business and dealing in goods/services | Includes activities that can reasonably cover the service being supplied. | Activities are wholly unrelated to an online service and support offers no explanation. |
| Return-filing information | Shows the filing information made available by the portal and does not contradict the operator’s claims. | The record is inconsistent with a claim that the entity is actively meeting its tax obligations. |
No single unusual field proves fraud. The decision rule is cumulative: an active record whose legal name, address and business profile make sense is materially stronger than a number that merely produces a search result.
Step 4: inspect the invoice and tax treatment
Download the invoice or receipt generated for the deposit. It should identify the supplier, GSTIN, taxable value and tax treatment. Keep it with your payment confirmation and the app’s terms in case you later need to challenge a transaction.
Check the document line by line
- The supplier name and GSTIN should match the verified record.
- The invoice should show what amount is taxable and how the tax is treated.
- The document date should align with the transaction date and the supplier’s registration status.
- The support or grievance route should lead to the same legal entity, not only to a payment processor.
- Terms should not name a different contracting party from the invoice without explaining the roles.
Some apps show a tax-inclusive wallet top-up without issuing a clear invoice until after payment. Treat that as unresolved: ask for the supplier identity and tax document before depositing, rather than assuming the badge is evidence of compliance.

Step 5: apply the extra check to a foreign operator
A foreign brand can market to Indian users while a different entity handles the Indian supply. The 2023 government release records a registration and liability framework for online-money-gaming suppliers outside India. Therefore, look for the Indian registration or representative information required for the supply and verify that entity on the GST Portal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Find the Indian entity, representative or registration named in the app’s tax and legal pages.
- Confirm that the invoice names that entity, not only the foreign brand or a payment processor.
- Search the disclosed GSTIN and compare its legal name, address, status and business activities.
- Check that the withdrawal, complaint and data terms identify where an Indian user can pursue a dispute.
A foreign incorporation certificate or a familiar international payment logo does not replace the Indian supplier check. If the operator gives only a foreign address and no explanation of its Indian tax position, do not treat the deposit as verified.
Step 6: check gaming regulation separately from GST
Use current Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) material to determine how the app describes its game and what verification or authorisation applies. The MeitY index lists the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 and April 2026 rules, authority and enforcement notifications. The framework summary distinguishes prohibited online money games from permissible social games and e-sports and describes payment, data and user-safety requirements.
Questions to ask in the app’s legal and safety pages
- Does the operator clearly classify the game as an online money game, social game or e-sport?
- Does it state the verification or authorisation relevant to that category?
- Are KYC requirements shown before a deposit, including accepted documents and review timing?
- Are responsible-gaming controls, limits, self-exclusion or cooling-off options available?
- Is a grievance officer or equivalent complaint route named with a response process?
- Does the privacy policy explain data collection, storage, sharing and deletion?
- Are deposits, bonus restrictions, withdrawal conditions, fees and expected timeframes explicit?
A tax-compliant supplier can still offer a game that is restricted or prohibited under current gaming rules. Conversely, a game category that appears permissible still needs a verified supplier and transparent payment terms.

| Stop sign | Why it matters | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| No contracting supplier is named | There is no entity to verify or hold to the invoice. | Do not deposit; request the legal name, address and GSTIN. |
| GSTIN is missing while tax is claimed | A tax badge cannot be tied to a registered supplier. | Ask for the invoice and GSTIN before proceeding. |
| Portal returns a different legal name | The number may belong to another business or be incorrectly displayed. | Pause and obtain a written explanation that matches the invoice. |
| Status is cancelled, suspended or inactive | The registration is not active in the portal result you received. | Do not rely on the app’s older screenshots or assurances. |
| Invoice names only a payment processor | The processor may collect funds without being the gaming supplier. | Identify the operator that owes the service and withdrawal. |
| Terms conflict with the tax document | Conflicting contracting parties create uncertainty about responsibility. | Require corrected documents before paying. |
| Support refuses registration or grievance details | You lack a practical route to resolve a tax or withdrawal dispute. | Stop and retain the refusal with your records. |
| Pressure to deposit before KYC or withdrawal rules are visible | You could commit funds without knowing eligibility or exit conditions. | Leave the deposit flow until those rules are available. |
These are decision rules based on the portal fields and the operator’s disclosures. A mismatch is a reason to pause and verify, not by itself a legal finding about the business.
Use a small, reversible test only after identity checks pass
If the supplier, GST record, invoice and gaming disclosures all align, you may still choose not to deposit. If you proceed, make the test deliberately limited and reversible.
- Read the withdrawal policy, minimums, fees, processing times and identity requirements first.
- Check whether bonuses or promotional credits create wagering or expiry conditions.
- Use an amount you can afford to leave locked while a withdrawal is reviewed.
- Save the deposit confirmation, wallet balance, invoice, terms version and support conversations.
- Test a withdrawal through the stated method before committing a larger amount.
- Stop if the operator changes the legal entity, adds unexplained fees or demands new conditions not disclosed before payment.
A successful deposit or a temporary win is not evidence of GST or gaming-law compliance. The useful test is whether the operator’s identity and documented withdrawal process remain consistent when you exercise your rights as a customer.

What a GST check cannot establish
- Permission to offer a game: GST registration is not a gaming licence or authorisation.
- Payment of winnings: Tax status says nothing about liquidity, reserves or willingness to honour a withdrawal.
- Fairness: The portal does not test random-number generation, odds or game outcomes.
- Fund segregation: GST records do not show whether player money is held separately.
- State-specific availability: A central tax registration does not remove restrictions that may apply in a particular state or territory.
- Privacy quality: The GST record does not evaluate how the app stores or shares identity documents.
Worked examples
Example: a consistent record
An app’s invoice names a company, shows an active GSTIN and lists an address that matches its legal terms. The GST Portal returns the same legal name, trade name, constitution and principal place, and the business activities are consistent with a digital service. The app separately identifies its game category, KYC process, grievance officer and withdrawal fees. This clears the identity stage, but you still need to decide whether the gaming disclosures and financial terms are acceptable.
Example: a number that belongs to another entity
The checkout page displays a GSTIN, but Search Taxpayer returns a different company in another line of business. The app’s support team says the payment gateway owns the number and cannot name the gaming supplier. That is an unresolved supplier mismatch. Do not deposit until a corrected invoice identifies the entity responsible for the game and withdrawals.
Example: an offshore brand with no Indian supplier disclosure
The terms provide only a foreign company name and a foreign address, while the payment page claims Indian GST is included. No Indian registration or representative is identified. Because you cannot verify the Indian supplier or match it to an invoice, the tax claim remains unsubstantiated; stop before paying.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Keep the check current
GST status, tax rules and gaming-authority requirements can change. Recheck the GST Portal immediately before a significant deposit, especially if the app has changed its terms, invoice layout, payment processor or legal entity. Review the latest MeitY publications for the applicable category and notifications rather than relying on an old “approved” badge or cached screenshot.
The practical threshold is straightforward: deposit only when you can identify the contracting supplier, verify an active matching GSTIN, obtain a coherent invoice, and independently understand the app’s current gaming, KYC, withdrawal, grievance and data obligations. If any of those links is missing, preserving your money is the safer decision.
