For an FFmpeg stream managed by systemd, start with systemctl status your-stream.service, replacing the example name with your actual service unit. This tells you whether systemd considers the service active and shows its main process ID. It does not, by itself, confirm that YouTube is receiving advancing video and audio.
Check the systemd service
Run these commands over SSH on the VPS. Replace your-stream.service with the unit name used to launch FFmpeg.
systemctl status your-stream.service— shows a human-readable service summary, including its current state and recent log output when available.systemctl show your-stream.service -p ActiveState -p SubState -p MainPID— prints a concise readout of the selected properties.
The systemctl manual documents show and selecting properties with -p. A nonzero MainPID means systemd currently records a main process for the unit; zero means it currently has no main PID.
Interpret the result carefully
Active service and nonzero MainPID
This is evidence that systemd currently considers the unit active and has a main process associated with it. It is a local process-manager check, not proof that the stream is progressing or that YouTube is receiving healthy media.

Inactive service or MainPID=0
The unit has no current main PID recorded. Check the status output and available service logs for the reason, then address the underlying failure before restarting the unit.
Do not mistake an old PID for a running process
ExecMainPID can retain information about the last execution even after that process has stopped. For current process state, inspect MainPID; systemd documents the distinction in its service properties.

Confirm FFmpeg is making progress
When available, inspect FFmpeg’s progress output as well as the service state. For the destination-side check, look at YouTube’s own live status. These checks answer different questions: systemd reports the local unit, FFmpeg can report encoding or output progress, and YouTube can show what it is receiving.
Add structured progress output to future runs
FFmpeg’s -progress URL option emits program-friendly key=value updates. Its documentation gives this pattern:

ffmpeg -progress pipe:1 -i INPUT OUTPUTThis is an example of progress reporting, not a complete YouTube streaming command. Preserve your existing input, YouTube ingest URL, stream-key handling, encoding settings, and output options when adapting a command. Do not expose a stream key in terminal screenshots or logs.
FFmpeg documents that the final key in a progress sequence is progress, with the value continue or end; -stats_period controls how often updates are emitted. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation. Its regular -stats output is enabled by default, while -nostats disables it; structured progress is more suitable when another program needs to parse updates.

If the check does not match what viewers see
- systemd says active, but YouTube does not show a healthy live stream: Treat the local status as insufficient. Inspect FFmpeg’s recent output and YouTube’s live status to determine whether media is reaching the destination and advancing.
- The service is inactive or has no MainPID: Read the status and logs available for the unit to identify why it stopped before attempting recovery.
- You see an old execution PID: Check
MainPID, not a rememberedExecMainPID, to determine whether systemd currently records a main process. - You need monitoring after disconnecting SSH: Use the service and logging setup you actually have, and verify whether it retains status and output. Retention depends on the operator’s configuration; it is not guaranteed by the status command alone.
